Title: Possible solution to newbie questions...
Post by: muckmaw on November 29, 2001, 01:59:00 PM
After reading Lepaul's post about his aggravation at the constant barrage of Newb questions, I took a minute to consider a possible solution to the problem. The question is whether or not this is feasible.

My thought is we set aside a channel on the radio, say 101, for example. Anyone interested in answering Newbie questions can leave their radio tuned to this channel. Any newb boradcasting a simple question, (How do I bomb, Etc) would be directed to tune to channel 101, and ask your question there. (Of course, this will be followed by, how do I tune to channel 101)

Anyway, would this work? Being relatively new myself, I don't know all the subtle nuances of the game, so if there are holes in this idea, please point them out.

If it's a sound idea, it will free up Channel 2, avoid cramming the text buffer, allow the newb to play MA, and still ask there questions to people who are willing to take the time to answer them.

Thoughts?

Private channel?

Which one would that be?

But if you tell me, it won't be private anymore.

Isn't it just plain easier to not reply at all or if one finds this uncontrollable urge to be a smart bellybutton with a newby that they instead reply with the answer? At least these newby question pertain to the game which is more than a quite lot of the blather on channel one consists of these days.     :)

One of the biggest complaints about the Newb questions was the fact that they fill up the text buffer, thereby crowding out critical information. Also, one question normally leads to an extended dialogue, which crowds the buffer even more.

With this idea, guys who have time on their hands (Me...what else am I gonna do on those resupply flights?) can answer the questions and carry on a dialogue on a channel purposly set aside for such chatter. The pilots who don't want to be bothered, will simply not tune to 101, and their buffer will retain more space for the information they want and need.

Like I said, it's just an idea I was toying with. If it will work technically, then perhaps we should implement it.

You can talk privately to anybody in the arena by tuning one of your radio channels to their GameID - just overtype their name in the desired channel window.

Alternatively select them on the roster and click Tune to - problem with this method is it seems to allocate the first channel to the private one, where I would prefer the third, for example.

Any text sent and received on the private channel will appear in white - like crew requests and Check6 text...   :)

I think people are overlooking something here. If you want to get rid of a problem...go to the source. You don't get rid of a tree by cutting the shoots...you dig out the roots!!! (I just made that up)     :D
The problem I found with my two week free period was that I didn't have a manual to answer my many questions and I looked everywhere for 1. Then I was told it's downloadable. But it would be nice if they made a link on the web site saying DOWNLOAD THE MANUAL HERE: Also, I was looking EVERYWHERE for the field maps. How do I know what to bomb??? That's the only reason I didn't spend more time in a buff.
Please someone make the info more easy to find.

Field maps are on your clipboard. If you knew the size of the field, (small, med, Large) you would simply select that map from the pulldown menu at the top of the clipboard/mapview. The maps included locations of each target, and keys to read the symbols.

Hope this helps.

Hey, I think FDSS actually has a point.  It wouldn't be that hard to have the installer create another icon that is simply a web link to the help pages.
