HT I'm having serious AH problems with this computer. (Please check in Tech support forum for "the nightmare continues..." for all the details.)
Basically what I need to know is why there are files called tmpwolf37.bmp etc in my Windows\system folder. I'm assuming they aren't supposed to stay there. All of them that are there date from after the problems began. What files should/may be in this folder, and is it ok to remove them?
I'm getting invalid page faults ONLY in applications requiring TCP/IP protocols. I'm thinking that somehow my computer is "forgetting" to remove files from the system folder that is causing these errors. I've recently deleted my swap files, reinstalled my Java VM, cleared cookies and history folder; this cured Internet Explorer. Telnet is still having problems though. AH is behaving very strangely as well (look in the tech support article mentioned above and in my bug...maybe article in the bug reports forum to see what's happening) I've tried a complete uninstall of AH and deleted the HTC folder, but the problem still persists. Those files are staying in my windows\system folder though... I'm thinking maybe something is being held in there that's keeping AH from working correctly.
I'm probably going to try reinstalling TCP/IP next to see if that makes a difference, but I really need to know what (if any) files should be staying in my Windows\system folder??? (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/confused.gif)
(Does anybody else have files in your windows\system folder called tmp*.bmp where * is the name of a squad CO? )
Thanks for the help. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Hi Bloom,
I just did a check of my system...no such files found....I would just delete them. If they are supposed to be there they will either be re-written when/if you re-install the game, or be downloaded as the nose art next time you connect. Wouldn't hurt to trash them and give it a try..at worst you would have to re-install AH.

Griz, thanks for the info. I need HT to tell me what files may be in there before I just start removing them. It is the key to fixing this computer.
I'll figure out the names of all of the questionable files in my system folder and post them here. I would appreciate if you guys could check and see if they are on your system too.

I have the following files in my windows\system directory that probably shouldn't be in there:
tmpbatmann.bmp
tmpdingy.bmp
tmpdmbdt.bmp
tmpdrill.bmp
tmpfdski.bmp
tmphanag.bmp
tmphblair.bmp
tmphooligan.bmp
tmpleonid.bmp
tmplephturn.bmp
tmpljkraub.bmp
tmpmars.bmp
tmpmig.bmp
tmpripsnort.bmp
tmpsupongo.bmp
tmpthorns.bmp
tmpudie.bmp
tmpwardog.bmp
tmpwargost.bmp
tmpwizzer.bmp
tmpwolf37.bmp
There is one other new file called Aeeohhba.eeo that was modified on the 10th of this month. A filed called Bbdjnmea.bdj is also new. Dliiacch.lii was created the 1st of this month. Other files created or modified within this month are:
Hdliiacc.dli
Hhbaaeeo.hba
Jnmeabbd.nme
Moocaaih.ooc
There are two other files that look strange called zonedoff.reg and zonedon.reg, but they are from October. I have NO idea what theses files are, they seem to be related to the registry...
I don't see anything else odd.

OH MY GOSH you got dweeb listitess (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
Look at that list of AH wackos (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/tongue.gif)
<joking>
If they are .bmp cant you open them with a paint program and see what they are?
I dont think they are nessesary files, possibly a squad list from a senario?
Downloaded or installed anything new lately?

Those files (.bmp ones) are all aces high nose art files. Identical to, for example: wolf37.bmp = tmpwolf37.bmp.
As far as I'm aware nothing has been installed in the last few days. I reinstalled Ah trying to solve the problem I was having, it didn't help. Other than that I removed then reinstalled the Java Virtual Machine to fix IE5.

Open c drive....go to view, folder options then view file types....see what apps use those anomolous extension types...

I don't know griz, I can't find any of those (except .reg) extensions registered to a program. That's why I posted the names here.
I'm hoping AH uses some of them.
Edit: I just did a big search of the web to find out what these extensions are. I was unable to indentify any of them. I even found a site with over 1000 files extension types, and it didn't list a single one. AH files???

Reinstall Both Direct X and your TCP IP Protocol. Make sure you have enough room for your Swapfile...
All else fails ?

Ah, the tale gets stranger. I had Dr. Watson running a few minutes ago and after exiting IE5 I got another error: Rundll32 has caused an invalid page fault in kernel32.dll at module 0187:6ff8abea. Dr Watson came up with this: --------------------
Adobe Type Manager has altered Windows system files.
Module Name: ATMSYS.DRV
Description: Adobe Type Manager
Version: R v4.00-32S058G06NN
Product: Adobe Type Manager
Manufacturer: Adobe Systems Incorporated
--------------------
<unknown> has altered Windows system files.
Module Name: <unknown>
First of all there is the adobe file, which is harmless. I think it's just extra fonts. Next is this wonderful <unknown>. I'm curious to see what the next error uncovers. Maybe those extra files in my windows\system directory are the key. I REALLY need to know which (if any), besides the bmp files, are related to AH.
Oh well, it gives me a mystery to solve over the break. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

Bloom...go out to the garage, find the biggest hammer you can, and..... (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif) It looks like Windoze is keeping temporary files. You *could* reinstall Windoze over top and see if that helps.

hiya bloom:
hehehe, sure blame it on my little file, hehehe.
try updateing you virus program, sounds like maybe a worm virus has made your computer its home. now going on how little I know about computers, I could very easiely be wrong.
tmpwolf37.bmp

bloom25 have you run a scan disk? The only way those files could get to your temp dir would b
1. AH is installed in your temp dir.
2. correupt hard drive.
3. somthing in the windows rename function , copy function or delete function first puts a copy of a file in the temp folder.
AH Dosn't use the windows temp folder for anything.

According to my monitoring of you computer the file
"tmpsupongo.bmp"
is a harmless but neccasary part of your operating system and should not be tampered with or examined to closely.
The others can be deleted..
Hope that helped.

Jeez Bloom.... "<unknown> has altered Windows system files." has VIRUS or TROJAN all over it bud.
<unknown> usually indicates a program which is trying to hide from the the task list so you can't spot it easily. IE, Sub 7, NetBus, BackOriface.
Run any dweeby flash or exe files someone sent you lately? A 5 year old can patch them with a damn good trojan with his hands tied behind his back and have them in your email before you can say "creamo i'm coming".
-
That's the thing, I don't use this computer except on weekends and holiday breaks. I've ran 4 scan disks now, no errors found. (1 was a through scandisk too, which took 3 hours to do.)
The ATMSYS.DRV is just extra fonts that abobe programs use.
The other I don't know about.

Weird crap happens. Two weeks ago, all my .exe files (MIME: applications/x-msdownload) got assigned to RealPlayer. I tried to fix it before reset and managed to get things screwed even worse. I came damn close to giving the registry an enema.
While when weird stuff like this happens, we want to blame a virus, and hence a run of the latest virus program is justified, often it's just an error in the wrong sector of the hard disk, or any number of bizarre nonspecific software bugs that cause it to happen. What you're looking at is when two (or more) programs collide, and as Aristotle put it, of the accidental there can be no science.
Sacrifice a virgin, reinstall windows and get on with your life.
-
I'd have to agree with Vulcan about the Trojan thang. Get a good virus scanner and get the latest virus definition file and give it a good scan.
-
I've done 2 complete Norton Antivirus 5.0 scans with new def files. No viruses found.
Here's what I do know:
There are two "patches" listed in Dr Watson. One is ATMSYS.drv and is a valid abobe font thing. The other says only module type GDI, and <unknown>.
While typing a response earlier I got 2 errors. Here is the Dr. Watson logs in case anyone can figure them out:
BSD Socket API for Windows attempted to read from memory that does not exist. It may be using an uninitialized variable, or it may be attempting to access memory after having freed it.

The first error I believe caused the second. From my basic C programming classes I think a null pointer exception may be caused because something got dumped from memory, then the program tried to access it via a pointer later.
The fact that AH is using my Windows\system folder as temp space can't be good either.
Something on this system is messed up, but I can't reformat and reinstall until the 8th of January at the earliest. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif)

Ok, I have 3 clues in the great mystery. A. Dr. Watson logs show what may be a virus of some type. 2 NAV scans come back negative though...
B. Possible bad stick of RAM. All the invalid page faults always point to the same address. Anybody know of a utility to check RAM? (I might pick up a stick of ram at work Friday.)
C. I did the following as suggested in bug reports thread I posted related to the AH problem: control panel > network > tcp/ip properties. I just clicked ok twice and windows had to rebuild a driver info database... Does this happen to the rest of you?
Thanks for all the help guys, this is great. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Jokes apart, sometimes Windows needs a complete format c: and reinstall. Good luck Bloom.
