from MSN.com
"Aug. 26 — As if executing a cosmic air kiss, Earth and Mars will come as close as they desire in Wednesday’s wee hours during a historical event that has captivated the attention of skywatchers around the globe. The two planets will be separated by 34,646,418 million miles at 5:51 a.m. ET. Not since the Neanderthals shared this planet with early humans have the two worlds been so close."
umm watch your numbers there buddy :)

damn, overcast here tonight.
-
tough luck, I've been watching it for a while now. Wish I had a telescope instead of an eyepiece...
-
I've had the scope out for most of the last week. I'm hoping these clouds clear today for the closest view
-
I get up at 5:00 every morning to go run, been watching it for about a month, pretty damn cool. Hasn't rained here in about 2 months, so always great conditions to check it out. I can remember watching Halley's comet when it made it's last trip past, going to make sure my kids check this out.

You guys with the scopes: What can you see?
-
not much with my little 3" refractor.
just color and shape mostly, I actually see much better detail on tv and the net, it's just somehow more interesting looking at it directly

Any telescope (that isn't a total pice of crap) should be able to see mars moons and such .... i find my best thrill seeing all tho's moons spinning around :)
And links always dead when i try to look at AKWabbit's stuff

actually it was the 27th (today) that it closes...and its overcast...
real kick in the pants:(

Ever been to the south? The neanderthals still do share this planet.
-
Whats the big deal, its like what, 30,000 miles closer? Thats less than 1% closer than its total distance? (sigh--had I thought this was going to be a big deal I would have invested in Orion stock back in January)
-
First we MUST ask the last of the Neanderthals....

exacly Rip.
The only difference it makes is if you want to GO there (and several missions were launched recently).
for viewing purposes, the two planets are alligned every couple of years and you won't see any difference. not even with HST.
There must have been shortage of news latly so the news eddition had to show either this or some people being killed in africa again.

Do you think men will ever go to Mars? What would it be, a two year voyage. One year there, and one year back.
I asked my brother one time how big a Mars rocket would have to be, if launched in the fashion of the Apollo moon rockets. He said, about the size of the Empire State Building.
So that idea is out.
Gotta be done some other way, far as propulsion goes. Then there's the human factor. Two years cooped up in a reatively small space. Can't be done without suspended animation of some sort. :D
