OTW home from work, 45 mile drive, 70mph - blowout  well actually detread. Just about lost control, did some over correction and went off the right side of the road almost into a big concrete culvert.
I'm feeling rather lucky right now :)

Glad you're okay Udie! I had a similiar experience once in my life (Forgive me for telling my story, Sling)
It was a front tire blow out. I had an all-terrains on a 1976 Int'l Scout and it blew out at 70 mph. Luckily no one was in the left lane as the truck careened toward the side of the road, I tried not to fight it as if you do, you'll flip.

Glad your ok Udie, thats how I lost my bother and niece.

I've had 1 other detread, in Houston '96 7:30 am I was going to work on loop 610 I had just passed the gallaria. That one was the right front tire, had to change it with rush hour traffic rushing by at 60mph 2' behind me :) I had a blow out once in my last car, right rear, 70mph in the left lane next to an 18 wheeler. Barely noticed that one. My steering wheel started vibrating a bit while I was passing the truck. It got worst when I slowed to 65 so I exited, it got progressively worse as I slowed down.
About 12 years ago I was driving a Ford Bronco from Austin to Killeen. Right rearr started smoking bad so we pulled over. We decided to exit and check it out at a gas station. Took the exit and when I hit the break I hear a loud snap and the steering got squirely. I looked out the side mirror and watched in horror as the left rear tire and 1/2 the axel slowly went left as the truck went right :D lucky for me that didn't happen 1 min earlier when I was doing 70mph with no seatbelt on :) Almost took out a guy on a motorcycle that day. I had no control until the truck stopped, about 3 ft in front of the bike.
[edit]
Hitech,
Yeah I thought about that yesterday when I was putting on the spare tire :(

Ever see "Final Destination"?
Better watch your back. Death may come calling soon to demand a correction.

Wow, 3 times the charm, eh?
The only time I've had a blow-out was when I borrowed my Mom's Cadillac and unbeknownst to me she'd let the tires get bald. I'm driving along and suddenly I hear Veerp veeerp veeerp flup flup flup . The tire had worn down to the inner liner and lost pressure. My mom seemed to get a lot of flat tires, probably because she didn't know how to maintain a car. Its the old "I put gas in it and it goes" mentality.
I've never had a flat tire on any of my vehicles. I've never run out of gas, either. The couple of times I've gotten nails in my tires I've managed to get'em fixed before getting stuck. I've broken a rear axle once, but that was on a very old car and I blame it on metal fatigue.

Glad you are okay Udie, that situation scares me just thinking about it....
Last year I had a the tread come off the driver side rear going 75 on the highwway from Phoenix to Tucson TWICE! The spare did the same thing after 2 months.
I have heard it is worse to have a rear tire go out than a front tire.
I was in an f-250 and the truck didn't lose control for some reason, but that sound is LOUD and wakes you fast.
Did the tread tear up your car?
-
no damage this time. on the last one back in 96 it tore up the wheel well pretty good. VERY loud and obnoctous!

Back in the 70s, working construction in downtown Houston, a friend and I were on the way home on 610. We heard this heliocopter approaching, I mean Loud! We had our heads stuck out the window looking up for it, when the tread finally let go and the tire blew. Scared the crap out of us, but I didn't lose control, just pulled over and put the spare on.
