I have a PC and a friend is moving into the basement and she has a Mac (yuck). I only have one internet line running into my house.
My question is: If my PC was hooked up upstairs and i hooked her mac up downstairs could we get online at the same time? This is with out routers or a hub. Just both computers hooked up to one internet line. I would think it could work but i might see a slow down in speed but im not really sure.
Its been a long time since i worked at the cable company and i forgot most of the crap dealing with upload speed and download speed with dual computers.

id suggest using a router...there not to expensive
since you dont want to use one you would have to ask you provider about it they all have different policies and such

Yeah, it completely depends on whether they will provide you with another IP. A router would be the way to go. Wireless, if you are going to be far apart.

Wireless, if you are going to be far apart.
I always smile when people suggest wireless routers :) , I wish all my neihbours had Wireless hehe!

If you are dealing just with two machines and both have a free ethernet interface, you could just get a crossed ethernet cable and hook up both machines with it and do NAT through your box. No need for more IPs from your ISP or a router or a hub. That's what I do at home, I have more than two computers, but never need more than two online at the same time.
WinXP does the internet sharing thingie off the box pretty well, for other versions I think you would need some routing software.

I have to wonder why, nevermind dont tell us!

Hooking a PC and a mac up to the same network will cause the mac to explode. Just a heads up.

I think he wants the simple answer.
It's easy, just install a ventilation fan in a convenient closet and put a GFCI outlet in on its own circuit. Simply put a computer in there running Linux w/ snort & a good firewall setup and configure it as a DHCP server. A good old fashioned Xeon will do good as your router, and any old LCD monitor will be fine for controlling it when you can't administer it remotely. BTW, I suggest you use standard rack mounts for everything. A 1U server will fit fine. Then, you just put two network cards in, one to your cable modem/dsl and the other to a a Cisco 8 port 10/100 switch (also 1U, easy to screw into the rack). All you need to do then is just punch a couple small holes in the wall around your house, thread some Cat-6 cable (or better yet, run conduit, THEN put in the Cat-6, that way you're planning for the future) through the walls to the holes and install some RJ-45 female jacks. At that point, it's childs play for your friend to hook her mac up to the network.
Easy as cake.

I've got a G4 sitting right beside this PC. They connect easily using a router... and they're pretty cheap. I surf the net on my Mac while flying on the PC (both sharing one ADSL connection). All in all it works out very well.
