Title: What was your first car?
Post by: Sandman on August 28, 2003, 12:30:20 PM
Rummaging through some old photos and I found these pictures taken in 1981 or 1982 of my 1966 Mustang.

I should add that I bought this car in 1979. I had a few years to work on it. :)

What happened to it, if you don't still have it?

My first was a '65 Pontiac Tempest that I brought back from rust bucket.   Its end came when a van rear-ended it and the insurance only gave me the bare minimum for it, claiming that it was too old and didn't have a blue book value.  We ended up buying it back from the insurance company and using as a utility vehicle for awhile, sans trunk, and then gave it to my cousin as her car.

I sold it when I joined the Navy. On the one hand, I'm sorry I got rid of it. On the other, I'm not really thrilled with working on cars anymore and I absolutely loath having to work on a "daily driver". Nowadays, I can afford to have a "hobby" car. Twenty years ago, I don't think I could have managed it.

1993 I bought my first car...76 Mustange II Cobra had for 3 months...(Died a horrid death, my neighbor back over it with an 18 wheeler. Our Neighbor hood say's no trucks at the entrace. Dumb bellybutton brought it in any ways..)

Mom bought me my aunts 88 Hyundai Excel GLS Sedan it only had 20k on was her "around town car". Her other car was a 93 Saab 900 convtr.

I have to say over the years people had bashed Hyundai for being a ****ty car. I kept the oil changed and never had problem 1 with the car. Sold it in 95 the car looked like it was brand new off the lot.   Great highschool/college car.

Control yourselves

1981 Chrysler K-Car /Dodge Reliant

Wasnt much fun, but in an era of "Dukes the Hazzard", it DID jump...munched the nose real good.  Father still loves telling the story of having his car towed and finding out the motor was bent upwards 7 inches....

Nash, my buddy had a VW bus and I remember 2 basic things.

1. It was up on blocks more than it was on the road.
2. We actually loaded it with 9 guys once and tried to drive up to the local mtns. It decided 1/2 way was far enough.

It was a very cool ride in its day tho.

Now THAT is a cool ride.  And I really mean that.  I have a certain fondness for those old outdoorsy, raw metal SUVs before the word "SUV" became synonymous with grocery-getting soccer Moms and OJ Simpson.  I once had a red 1977 Mazda pickup truck that was all character like that.  It was the ultimate surf truck, right down to the rusted hole under the floorboard that I patched with fibreglass.  We had a white topper over the bed that we'd remove for oversized loads.  It even had a Mack bulldog mounted on the hood.  Lots of fun and cheap to keep until I started having problems with finding parts for the brakes.

1. Ayup. It never needed any major repairs, but something would always be going wrong with it. Though... nothing that a toothpick, some electric tape and a couple of rubber bands couldn't handle. :)

2. Hills... Yeah. I didn't once see another car whilst going up a hill. The only clue to their presence was this whizzing sound... "Shooom, shoom, shoom, shoom" outside.

1973 Toyota Celica ST.  18R engine, poor brakes.

Highlights include jumping it Duke of Hazard style, taking it to the fairgrounds to do donuts and more, buying complete wheels and tires at the junkyard for $5 each to avoid mounting fees, the radiator exploding while I was in front of it and having to limp 40 miles home past midnight with burns all over my front and relying on sympathetic convenience clerks to get 44oz cups of water & ice for the radiator (constantly refilling, not cap after explosion), and more.

Great car, did a lot of cool things in it until the police took it away.

PS, did you know that a Celica can go 126 miles per hour if you have no fear of death and poor judgement?

Mine was a 61 Dodge Lancer. It was a homely lil toad but the price was right. The lady that owned it gave it to me for having worked on it for over a year. I kept it running for her until she ran the thing outa oil. Afer she gave it to me I went out, filled thecrankcase and drove off. Later I changed te 170 CI slant 6 for a 225 slant 6. It was a stick shift but due to the misalignment  with the trans. I had 2nd and 3rd gears in oposite positions from normal. I also tore up a clutch plate every 6 weeks or so. After about 3 years I sold it to a Mexican national for $500.00. Both of us were happy. ;)

Wow, did the plastic seats have that thick vinyl feel to them?  You know, like on cheap barstools and diner booth benches?  I think those seats were virtually indestructable, at least until the sun bleached them out and they cracked.

The seats in my Mazda truck were white perforated vinyl bench, which I replaced with hi-back black vinyl buckets (as a safety measure, so I wouldn't crack my head open on the glass on the back of the cab in the event of a rear-end collision).  The rims were painted to match the body, but had those little chrome dish hubcaps over the lugnuts.  It looked like a little toy truck, lots of character to it, just a simple red pick-up with absolutely no creature comfort to it and probably a deathtrap.  The Mazda had these rubber plugs in the floor that I could open up to drain the cab in the event of liquid spills, but I never had to use them.

They don't make vehicles like that anymore.

First Car -  75 Vega GT, 4speed, white.    Bought it in 77 for $1500.  Read Hot Rod magazine and dreamed of dropping in the small block,  never did it,  ended up trading it in for a 69 Olds Cutlass Convertible with 350 4brl in 79, that ended its life wrapped around a tree in 82.
Wish I still had that car.

Frodo, I had a plan when I bought the Falcon wagon.  :)

6 months later I bought a 67 Mustang Fastback w/289 and auto.  Went to the wrecking yard, got a 289 from it, rebuilt that engine into a 9,000rpm monster, backed by a Ford Top loader 4 speed and dropped that into the Mustang.
Now, took the Falcon rear end and put it under the Mustang (better gear ratio and yes the read axle for a Falcon is the same for the Mustang).  Took the 289 from the Mustang, beefed it a bit and dropped it in the Falcon with a B&M torque converter and a B&M kit for the C4 auto.

By the time it was all done, the Mustang would trip the lights at about mid 11's, and the Falcon would hit the low 13's pretty consistently.

Then in my Senior year in high school I obtained my 69 Road Runner.  And that was my monster car.  First time to trip the lights in the high 10's.

At any given time when I was growing up, there were 7 vehicles at our house (3 mine, 1 for sis, 2 for Dad (he was a hot rodder too), 1 for Mom).  Needless to say, the folks were really happy to see me move out.  :D

My first car was a 1971 VW Super Beetle, with the "Shift O'matic" transmission. I bought it in 1982, having just aquired my license.

Within the first five minutes of owning it, I allowed the car to roll backwards down a driveway while shifting, and promptly jammed the transmission in reverse!

So, with my father leading the way in his truck on back country roads, I drove the thing 6 miles, all backwards, to a repair shop.

Still can't believe I survived through high school driving this car. There was no motorized fan in the thing, so the faster you drove, the more heat you got out of it in winter! And don't even think about air conditioning, that didn't exist.

I was lucky never to get into an accident with that car, as the only protection for me besides my seat belt in front, was the gas tank! That's right, the gas tank was up front. Wonder what genious engineer dreamed up that configuration!

Haha skuzzy.  That reminds me of my parent's house.  Back when my brother and I lived at home:

Dad's 95 Chevy Truck
Mom's 99 Corolla
Brother's 99 Sunflower
Brother's 68 GTX
Brother's 76 Suzuki 500
My 99 Grand Am
My 70 Duster
My 85 Honda Nitehawk 650

And a driveway with room enough for one car.

A good friend is one with extra garage space. :D

Oh, and my first car was a 1976 Pontiac Lemans 2 Door.
350 4V that i tricked out a bit.  Picked it up from a super old guy whose lawn i cut.  I think it had something like 32,000 miles on it when i got it for $800 CDN dollars. And it was mint.

Only real option it had was A/C, but I never used it.  Those old compressors were huge and drained your HP and gas mileage too much.  I think I even tore the whole thing off eventually.

Anyway it met it's fate when a underhood fire consumed most of the front of the car and dash.  Dang I miss that car.

Next car was the 1970 Plymouth Duster.
FM3 Panther Pink/Moulin Rouge (original factory colour)
318 (switched to 340)
904 auto (switched to 727)
7 1/4 inch rear end (switched to 8 3/4)

It is currently broken though

A 1980 BL Mini, trouble was I bought it in 1996 from my sister. I was the first male owner. But I was broke and it broke on me a few times too. I was a biker before that.
Women are clutch killers so that went first. Then the engine mount went several times, a Mini problem apparently. That broke the exhaust every time. The steering failed while I was driving it, a bit scary that. The coolant started leaking away so I had to carry gallons of water as it overheated every 10 miles or so.  Bits dropped off every day.  But it was fun and it handled great although every one laughed at me, even people who didn't own a car? It finally expired and I got a Suzuki Swift which amazingly used to suffer from carburettor icing. So every few miles it would suffer a rich cut and you'd have to stop and wait until the ice melted.

I learned all about car maintenance from those two but now I drive a Golf and don't have any problems.

1956 Ford Customline Ambulance. 312 Y Block (out of a T-Bird) with all the usual stuff, competition clutch, Borg Warner T-10 4 speed stick.

There was a brief alliance with a 1936 Ford 5 Window Coupe at the same time, but it didn't last (too much rust).

1962 Rambler Classic, straight 6, push-button auto-transmission on the dash.  My Dad bought that car brand new when I was 8 yrs old.  And it lasted 'til I was 16, when I drove it over a hump (very slowly too) on a dirt road, and broke the steering shaft. :(

Like Chairboy, my first was an early Celica, mine was a 1972. Bought it used, and abused, a bad blue respray, mag wheels, with 4 different tires, but man it was a quick little 4 banger with a lot of torque. I recall vividly still an impromptu late night road race with a 1975 Camaro that I passed (and he REALLY was trying not to be passed) that almost ended up with me getting into a really nasty headon accident at about 100mph. Stupid crap you pull in high school. Sold it when I went into college (sniff).

PS - Never should have gotten rid of that bone stock 4 speed 1972 Datsun 510 either, bad move that.

First vehicle, or all vehicles owned?

First vehicle was a 1968 Chevrolet 1/2 ton long narrow bed, bought from my grandfather.  Had a 307/4 speed, 4.56 gears (he needed it to make that little 307 pull anything more than the truck itself).
That was in 1981........from there:
1974 Monte Carlo
1978 Monte Carlo
1966 El Camino 327/4 speed (bought it my senior year in high school, still got it at my dad's farm)
1983 Chevy 3/4 ton LWB (bought it three days after I graduated high school in 1984.  Only reason I got 3/4 ton was that 1/2 tons only had the 305 available.  Shoulda got a 1/2 ton and swapped in a 350.......)
1968 Chevy El Camino....bought from a salvage yard for $100, it had no seats, so I drove it home sitting on a milk crate!  Converted it from 307/3 speed to 350/TH350.  Sold it a year later to a guy in Electra, TX, he put a 402/TH400 in it and last I heard a guy wrapped it around a telephone pole.
1966 Chevy 1/2 ton LWB (screamer.....pulled the 283/Powerglide out and put in a 355/Turbo 350.  With 3.90 gears, it ran really hard and surprised a lot of "musclecar" owners.  Ugly as heck.)
1979 Z/28  (my Frankenstein car....during the time I owned it, it had 8 different engines in it, ranging from the stock 350 to a 454 with LS6 heads.  Also ran numerous transmission combos, everything from the stock TH350 to a Muncie close ratio 4 speed.  Sold it to a guy I worked with in 1990 after I tried a full throttle pass on slicks with the LS6/TH400 combo and a NOS Cheater system set to 250 horses.  Broke the windshield and twisted the unibody so badly the doors never opened or shut correctly.....subframe connectors or some sort of stiffening are a MUST on those cars when you put that much power into them and get it to hook up!  ;)  )
1969 Chevelle SS396.......Never could get it to idle smooth, and it smoked some on startup.  Pinged like heck on pump gas, I figured it was bad valve seals letting oil get in and decided to pull it out and rebuild it.  Surprise, surprise.......machine shop called me and said it wasn't a 396, but a 427......had a friend check the casting numbers and the ID number on the block....crate engine L88 427.  No wonder it wouldn't idle below 1200 rpm!  Ran like crazy on the highway when you got above 90mph (3.31 gears and all).  Sold in 1988 when I got laid off from my factory job)
1972 El Camino SS.....the one I regretted buying the day after I brought it home.  Ended up trading it off for engine parts in 1990.
1981 Caprice Classic (bought it for my wife, got the urge to build a sleeper.......didn't know that the TH200-4R had a built in weakness in the input shell.......lol!)
1973 Monte Carlo (bought it in 1990 for $166 from a kid who had gotten it for his graduation present and then he hurt the motor.  Turned out he was the 2nd owner, and it only had 60K miles on it.  Maintenance receipts from the original owner still in the glove box when I bought it.  Lost the damn car the next spring when I got divorced.  She got the Monte Carlo AND the Caprice, I got ZILCH.  Hated to lose it, had a new engine in it and then she sold it for $400 cause she hated the car and said she just wanted to get back at me  :(   )
1983 Olds Cutlass Supreme (Hail dents galore..........but it got me around.  Tinted the windows REAL dark so no one could tell it was me driving the POS.)
1980 Z/28......305/TH350, T-tops.  Was driving this when I met my wife.  She loved it, I loved the T-tops.  Stayed sunburned year round when I owned it.
1981 Z/28......canary yellow, never got to drive it.  Brought it home, guy across the street offered me twice what I had just paid for it.  Wish I had kept it, was the only 2nd generation F-body I owned that didn't have worn out door hinges.
1970 Chevy 1/2 ton LWB.....350/3 speed on the floor.
1969 Chevy 1/2 ton LWB.......396/TH400 from the factory, but no A/C.  Put a TH700-R4 in it and drove it til the engine was worn out.  Sold her to a guy in Amarillo in 1997.
1984 Z/28.....bought from a guy in Henrietta, TX  for $1000 in 1996.  First gear was out (5-speed) and he had run it under the back of a flatbed truck, so the hood had two long gouges on it.  Had the transmission rebuilt, put in a 355 and headers, proceeded to tear up the rearend and 3.73 gears.  Got a salvage yard rearend with 2.73's, hated it after that.  Sold to my brother in law in 1998.
1979 Pontiac Trans Am SE........one I should have kept.  Came from the factory with the Pontiac 400, 4 speed transmission, 4 wheel discs, all power, T-tops, tan interior, midnight blue color (I forget what Pontiac called it)  Supposedly a rare car, but the T-top seals had gone bad and the floor was rusted through.  Traded it for......
1986 Monte Carlo SS.  Still got this one.  Presently has a 12-bolt rear with 4.10's, engine is under construction.  It will probably never see street duty again.  This is what I call my "stupid" car.  Gonna get really stupid with it, kinda wild on the engine I am building for it.
1973 Chevy 1/2 ton LWB.......Put a small block 400 with Sportsman heads in it backed by a TH700-R4.  Ugly, ugly, UGLY, but got 20mpg hwy after I put the overdrive in.
1990 Chevy 1/2 ton SWB.....350 TBI and 5 speed........got it from the local bank as a repo.  Wish I had never sold it.  Paid $2600 in 1998, sold it for $4600 to a guy in Missouri in 1999.  Sweet, sweet truck.
1982 Buick Century.......4 doors, V6......YAWN..........but.... ..traded it straight across for........
1990 Ford Taurus SHO.   Rod knocking, then the engine locked down.  Put a salvage yard engine in her and drove it forever, til I had to get rid of it when the oilfield died off a couple years ago.
1981 El Camino.....bought for $150, took it home and put in a battery and set of plugs, then drove it all over Texas while I was roughnecking.  Sold this past February for $500 with no engine or transmission.
1997 Saturn , bought new in 1997.  Hated it, will not buy or drive another Saturn if I have anything to say about it.
1996 Chevrolet Lumina LTZ  One of the finest cars I ever owned.  Lost it at the same time I lost the SHO Taurus.
1990 Olds 88.....bought for a song, it got us through just fine.  Wife just had to have a van, so she traded it off last week....
1988 Chevrolet 1/2 ton LWB 4x4......still driving it.  Has a 1996 Vortec 350 longblock in it right now, soon to be sold without the engine.  New TH700 in it, so if anyone wants a good 4-wheel drive truck project........;)
1980 Chevy SWB 1/2 ton.......bought it for my 13 year old son, so we could have a father-son project.  He lost interest, so until he decides he wants to help old Dad work on it, it is mine.  355 with Vortec heads and a TH400 and 3.40 rearend.  Just a fun truck to drive around.
1983 Chevrolet Impala.....just bought it a couple months back for CHEAP.  Gonna put the engine outta the 4x4 in it and use it for the 300 mile drives I've been having to do lately.  The old Caprice I had way back for 22mpg on the highway with a 175K mile engine it, so this low mile 350 should get similiar.  With gas prices like they are, and the 4x4 only getting 14mpg, this will be my main ride to and from work.
Lastly.........my wife's new toy, a 1998 Ford Windstar Northwoods conversion.  She likes it, so does anything else matter?
That enough vehicles to qualify me as a gearhead?
;) :D

Jeez......forgot about the 1979 Olds 98 with 403/TH400 I got from my dad.......and the 1987 Pontiac Bonneville.  Should have kept the Bonnie........ended up trading it for that POS new Saturn in 1997......
Thirty three vehicles since 1981.....do I get a prize for most vehicles?  :P

1970 Super Beatle - POS Edition.  $600

Overall I've had (almost all POS Editions):
VW's:
14 bugs 57 - 74
7 Ghias 59 - 73
7 busses 62 - 70  (3 had the 8 roof windows and giant sunroofs)
1 fastback
1 squareback
1 rabbit convertible
1 quantum
1 sandrail

also:
2 1960 mercedes
6 fiats 60 - 74
4 saabs 72 - 85
7 volvos 62 - 86
4 dodges
1 cadilac
2 mazdas
1 honda
2 or 3 fords
1 or 2 chevys
2 datsuns
1 mg
1 audi

probably forgetting a few...

A lot of these cars I bought for under $100 just so I could beat the crap out of them, see how far I could jump them, etc.  Growing up in Alaska in the 80's made this form of cheap entertainment possible.  Some of the VWs were parts cars.
