Oklahoma was playing football before it was a state. It's the only one of two Division I football programs to win seven or more national championships. And OU is the only Division I football program ever to record 47 straight victories

Saw one fantastic game last night. CU vs. CSU. In-state rivals slugging it out, decided with seconds to go, 42-35.
-
Well, since we are braggin a little-
21 SEC championships.
12 National Championships
50 bowl game appearances
Bear Bryant was the most winning coach (315 vics) in college football until recently surpassed by Joe Paterno.

And Bobby Bowden, speaking of did anyone catch that hit Greg Jones laid on his would be tackler?
-
Yea, he popped the **** outta that guy, that was great. Knocked his helmet off when he hit that wideout and the other guy.
Anyone see Tennessee's punter get clocked? That was pretty amusing too.

Yeah, sweet blindside

Good to see Pete Carroll doing well, the inmates were running the asylum here with the Patriots. It wasn't all his fault, the personnel director threw him under the bus(Bobby Grier) " the right people are being drafted, it's just that the coach isn't using them right." I hear Grier is drafting for the Texans now, good luck to ya.
1998 Grier draft
1 18* Robert Edwards RB
1 22 Tebucky Jones S
2 22* Tony Simmons WR
2 24 Rod Rutledge TE
3 20* Chris Floyd FB
3 22 Greg Spires DE
4 23 Leonta Rheams DL
5 22 Ron Merkerson LB
6 23 Harold Shaw RB
7 22 Jason Anderson
* Picks we got from the Jets getting Parcells( that Bill said we would waste anyway, lol)
Rod Rutledge in the 2nd round, doh! 6 picks in the first 3 rounds, robert Edwards wasn't a bad pick, but first rounders are mostly no brainers. Tebucky could have been had in the 2nd easily.

Ouch, that was darn impressive. That guy's mother felt that lick.

The odds are definately in OU's favor. They have a tremendous team this year. But considering the turmoil Bama has had recently, we face a better OU team with nothing to lose on Saturday, where OU has everything to lose. I will take that with a smile. BTW, OU barely escaped last year, if you watched the game.

until last year I could really never get into college ball. But now I am a rabid fan, and usually the best games are the lesser schools. I watched the CU, CSU game to, outstanding game.
Thing that drives me nuts is the big schools playing the tiny ones and running the scores up, why on earth are those games even scheduled?
-
The small schools schedule them for money, the large schools schedule them for practice.

Booooooooooooooomer!
Love ya Nate...

Back in the late '70s I went to the annual USC vs. UCLA game and of course USC trounced the hell out of the Bruins. By the end of the 3rd quarter, SC had the game in the bag and on the score board was this:
U
Clowns
Lose
Again
GO SC!
ack-ack

The story of Big Al, Bama's mascot.-
http://www.rolltide.com/Cheerleaders/6990.asp
The story of how Alabama became associated with the "elephant" goes back to the 1930 season when Coach Wallace Wade had assembled a great football team.
On October 8, 1930, sports writer Everett Strupper of the Atlanta Journal wrote a story of the Alabama-Mississippi game he had witnessed in Tuscaloosa four days earlier. Strupper wrote, "That Alabama team of 1930 is a typical Wade machine, powerful, big, tough, fast, aggressive, well-schooled in fundamentals, and the best blocking team for this early in the season that I have ever seen. When those big brutes hit you I mean you go down and stay down, often for an additional two minutes.
"Coach Wade started his second team that was plenty big and they went right to their knitting scoring a touchdown in the first quarter against one of the best fighting small lines that I have seen. For Ole Miss was truly battling the big boys for every inch of ground.
"At the end of the quarter, the earth started to tremble, there was a distant rumble that continued to grow. Some excited fan in the stands bellowed, 'Hold your horses, the elephants are coming,' and out stamped this Alabama varsity.
"It was the first time that I had seen it and the size of the entire eleven nearly knocked me cold, men that I had seen play last year looking like they had nearly doubled in size."
Strupper and other writers continued to refer to the Alabama linemen as "Red Elephants," the color referring to the crimson jerseys.
The 1930 team posted an overall 10-0 record. It shut out eight opponents and allowed only 13 points all season while scoring 217. The "Red Elephants" rolled over Washington State 24-0 in the Rose Bowl and were declared National Champions.
Bama picked up the term "Crimson Tide from an announcer in a late 60's game (I believe). At the beggining of the game, the team entered the field wearing red and the announcer exclaimed that they looked like a crimson tide. It stuck.

Amateur sports... pffft...

No one has talked about them because they haven't played yet, and therefore no one is aware of their pure awesome devastating power. Beware of the big walking orange! SU!
-
I have lost my taste for pro football due to drug problems and other abuses, getting the same way about college football too. It is all about the almighty dollar (which I personally would like more of). Seems the game isn't a game anymore, just a bunch of guys out trying to get noticed by the pro's.
I used to be an avid football fan. It seems such a waste of time anymore.

What does amateur sports have to do with this thread?
We're talkin' 'bout college football.
Stay on subject.

I'm not much of a College football fan, but I always make at least 1 TCU game a year. Go Frogs!

The schools are probably of similar size.
The offensive tackles are probably not. :D

Needless to say, Makovic hasn't worked out quite as well as we hoped.

I thought I was going. But I had to change my plans. I'll be catching it on the boob tube. Bama will have a better chance of winning if I'm not there.

Was wonderin when you'd bite. I'm kinda busy this weekend, kids and all that :D

Great game sooners. The call for the fake punt in a situation like that just shows why oklahoma is ranked #1 at this time. Bama played them a good game and kept it pretty close, which is all we could really ask under the circumstances.
