Title: Best summer yet....
Post by: Udie on August 30, 2003, 08:40:55 PM
for fishing and the Udster :)

Hit the water at 6:45 am this morning with my bro.  By 7:10 we both had 2 fish each in the boat,  that's a good start for  a morning.  Then the fish turned off.  Not another bite for about 3 hours.  At 7:10 I caught another little dink bass.  But at 7:15 things got serious.  I threw my worm right at the edge of the reeds we were fishing.  Set the reel and turned to talk to my bud.  I felt a little hit on my lite and looked to see my line moving left.  I reared back and set the hook,  it was SOLID.  I mean it didn't give an inch, I love those kind :D

It started pulling hard right from the start.  I said "I think this one is a little better than the others".  Then I noticed my line moving off to the right and away from the boat.  I could tell he was about to jump and try and throw the hook out, so I waited and when he did I slung the line down and left (this gets them back in the water without putting slack in the line)  My buddy and I just about took a crap on ourselves when we saw the MOUTH that came out of the water.  I didn't have "get the net" 1/2 way out of my mouth before my friend had the net in hand :D

After the first jump the fish stopped fighting for a bit. I was able to reel in about 1/2 the line and got him about 3 feet from the boat.  Which is when it switched to tactic #2 and headed straight under the boat.  (If the line hits the boat when they do this there's a 90% chance it will break) This is when I noticed my drag was set too tight, because he was pulling HARD and no line was coming out.  So I loosened it up some and the fight went on.  He then ran back towards the reeds pulling drag the whole way and made another 2 jumps trying to throw the hook.

I got him back to the boat the 2nd time and WHAM there he goes again trying to get under the boat.  Everytime I'd get him to the surface he'd see the net and WHAM more drag out of the reel :D  I was almost in tears I wanted that fish in the net so bad.  He made one more try for under the boat and then we got him in the net after he surfaced 1 foot from the boat.  We layed him on the back of the boat and my buddy grabbed the line.  The hook came right out without even touching it    Had I let ANY slack in that line durring the 5 minute fight I would have lost my new record 25.5" 8 lb. large mouth bass :D Then I did what I've never done before, even without a camera to get a picture.  I released him back into the water.  Still kind of hurts because it was a BIG fish :D  She was skinny though. We're thinking had it been spring time durring the spawn she would have got 9.5 or 10 lbs.

This has been my best summer fishing ever. I've broken my record 3 times now :) and know what its like now to fight a lunker that knows what it's doing. Thank you Eagler for your state giving Texas all those wonderful Florida Large Mouth Bass!

Fished Saturday at lake Decker, it's a power plan lake here in Austin.  Caught my 6.5 lb and 7.5 lb lunker out on lake Austin.  Still stoked on that fish yesterday :)

If you have a boat come up some weekend,  I'll be happy to put you on em!

Uh, Curval, you do know what powerplants use lakes for, right?

Just in case, I will tell you-they use them to put warm water in from the turbines.  The only pollution in them is the warm water, which fish prefer.

actually Curval,  power plant lakes are probably a lot safer to eat from than normal Texas lakes.  Most Texas lakes have murcury warnings an all bass,  not so in power plant lakes.  The fish are 10 times more healthy in Decker than any other lake I've fished in.  You can tell just by looking at  them.  No sores,  good color etc...

Power Plant Pollution (http://www.politicsol.com/guest-commentaries/2002-07-06.html)

More (http://www.powerscorecard.org/issue_detail.cfm?issue_id=6)

I could find a ton more like this.

I suppose you will say that the lakes they use for producing the electricity are pollution free and it is the "other" lakes that they are polluting...I mean they wouldn't do anything to impact fishermen..surely.

I could probably dig up some dirt on the specific lake in question.

Keep eating dude...then call me a moron in a few years when your third arm starts growing.

I don't know about the quality of the water in 'other Texas lakes', but I wouldn't eat fish from the 'cooling pond'.

when a boiler is shut down it is drained. the drains run to the pond.  this run-off includes all the chemicals added to the water, plus 'fly-ash' that is picked up as the water runs off (it's everywhere in a coal plant, containing high consentrations of arsnic, lead, and many other nasties).  add this to the run-off from rain that falls on the mountain of coal stored next to the plant seeping into the lake and you get quite a chemical cocktail.

the warmer water gives the fish plenty to eat and you can get some great fishing in, but I wouldn't eat them.

This is an oil/nat gas fired plant, and they do not drain the boilers into the lake(anywhere).  I did some searches, but so far can't find any cites on pollution at Walter E. Long Lake, it's real name, or for the Decker Creek powerplant.

This is one of the top 5 bass lakes in the nation (one of the top 2 in the state IMO).  We have all sorts of local anglers that keep track of the condition of the water on a daily basis.  They go as far as to check O2 levels at diferent depths throughout the lake.  If they are low they call the TPWL department right away.  I've never heard anything about polution at this lake,  God I hope it stays like it is now!

This is true enough Curval. Used to live in Morro Bay Ca. There is a natural gas power plant there that dumps cooling water into the ocean.

The only pollution was heat. (Heat is a form of pollution as it changes the ecosystem in the area affected) This drew different species of fish, corals, sponges and mollusks to the area, but didn't eally harm the local fauna. Just moved it.

It also made for a great place to surf without a wet suit.

MT...that contrasts markedly from what Apathy said just above.

I'm no expert..but I can assure you that I wouldn't swim, or eat fish from, some lake built for the purpose of providing water to a power plant.

Nor would I swim in the heated run-off from a "cooling lake".

If that makes me a moron..so be it.

Who tells you guys that there is "no pollution" other than heat anyway?  I think you will find it is the spin doctors hired by the plants who do most of that.

Udie...I'm sure that you are right and that this particular Lake is fine...but you acknowledge that Texas water is so full of mercury there are warnings to not eat the fish or swin there.  I'd be very, very sceptical.

if it's a gas plant and not coal-fired it would be much cleaner.  you'd still get the chemicals they put in to treat the water, but you'd have a lot fewer heavy metal problems and you'd completely avoid the run-off from the coal pile.

as powerplants go I'd live next to a gas fired if I had to choose one.  (as long as they didn't switch to oil too often,  most plant around here only keep a supply of oil on hand to maintain electric service in the event of problems with the gas line)

and they do not drain the boilers into the lake(anywhere).

when the boilers are shut down for inspection/repair (anually at the very least, unless safety codes are much more lax in Texas). the boilers are drained.  then after repairs they are hydro-staticly tested (this involves filling them with water and applying pressure, sometimes filling and draining several times before all leaks are found and fixed), then draining them.  then they are filled with water treated with a caustic chemical and 'boiled down' (to remove impurities) then drained.  the original water is chemically treated and the boil-out water is also treated, they are drained right out onto the floor, into the storm drains and out into the cooling pond.

in a gas plant you'd only have this a couple times a year though so it would be fairly minimal if it's a good sized lake.

This is Austin.  They don't let people pee in the water, much less dump chemicals in it.

They don't say to NOT eat the fish :D  It depends on the lake, but most of them that have warnings that I have seen say not to eat more than about 2.5 lbs of bass every month.  Catfish and other edibles don't hold the murcury in their bodies like bass do.  I think I remember reading that it stays in the eyes of the bass.  Well I don't know anybody who eats bass eyes!

and you're not a moron Curval  and say hello to Bob Marley for me ;)

oh yeah, you guys are a bunch of communist thread hijackers!!!!! Let's get this baby back on topic.
