Post by: Curval on September 02, 2003, 12:07:40 PM
Big Bad Boy bearing down on us (http://www.goes.noaa.gov/HURRLOOPS/huirloop.html)

May not be playing AH for a while after Friday.

If this thing hits Bermuda it is going to HURT.  Category 4 right now..140mph sustained winds.

We are the wee little white dot that is right in the path of this monster.

Crap Curval, seriously hope you guys will be okay. How far can the surge come inland from a hurricane this size anyway? That would scare me the most, the ocean surge coming in.

Last time a category 5 hit the island was in 1927, I believe...basically wiped out the island.

This one is category 4, but could build to a 5 out in the open ocean.

I don't know the answer to your question Nuke.  Never been in a cat. 4 before.

It ain't gonna be pretty if it hits though...that's for sure.

The Hurricane service has the storm tracking just to the west of the island on Friday...BUT there is a cold front comng down from the north-west across the US that could well push it right on top of us.

I'm more worried about wind effects than surge based on where I am now...we haven't moved into Helm's Deep yet...we had scheduled for the big move on Thursday, but we put if off until the 11th.

Grab a surfboard and ride it out, ya panzy!

Actually, I've surfed a hurricane and it wasn't worth the effort.  Too much chop, too much undertow.

When you're done with your hurricane, send it our way.  It isn't nearly difficult enough to find home insurers nowadays.

If you know that in 24-48 hours advance that its going to hit the island directly, wouldn't it be wise to fly the wife and kids out? (along with yourself, unless you WANT to experience what some did in Louisiana back in the 60's but didn't live to tell the stories)

I was in that one back in the 60's, but it was in Mississippi.  It was on my Birthday, in fact.  Our house was about 300 yards from the beach, just on the Longbeach/Gulfport line.  We stayed at my Grandmothers about 15 miles inland.  Did little damage to our house, because it was under water.

Also been in 3 or 4 on the Texas coast, too, but I would not stay in one now.  Good Luck Curval, maybe it will miss you guys.

ROFLMAO...coffee through the nose there...

Rip...I guess you are right...if it goes to Category 5 I will look into getting the wife and kids off the island.  But it is sooooo tough to say that it will definately hit even up to 12 hours before the storm here.  We are like a 22 mile long ship in the middle of the ocean...things can change in a hurry.

In 1987 there was a Hurricane called Emily that hit here...Category 3 I think.  The weather service told the island the night before that it was not a threat so no-one was prepared.  It altered course and hit at 7.15am.

I have a T-shirt that was done commemorating that one..it was captioned "The B*TCH came to Breakfast".  :)

Not sure if this is the one you're talking about or not but in 1968 hurricane Camile blasted through the gulf. I was in Pensacola at the time.

Yeah, Camille, August 17-18, 1968.  The destruction was incredible.  Two things stuck in  my mind:  A car was stuck in a magnolia tree in our yard, one of our favorite climbers.  It was abut 30 feet up, and we found dead dogs and cats EVERYWHERE, and kept finding thier bones for years.

What you need to do is to go out on a shrimp boat and sit on the top of the mast and yell at God when the hurricane hits.  If it turns out like I've seen in the movies, you'll end up a multi-millionare.

Yea I just checked it.  Best case scenario is that the eye will pass 70nm west of the island...given the size of this storm we are gonna get one heck of a blow on Friday.  It keeps veering east, which is scary given there is still a long way for it to go.

I have meetings scheduled all day Friday with clients who are flying in the day before..they may change their plans now.

Earlier this spring meteorologists from across the globe predicted this season to be a boomer for Hurri's. So far it hasn't panned out, but we're just now beginning Hurri season.  Could this be the start of many to come?

I wouldn't trust the news.....best thing would be to get in a 22 foot boat and scout out the storm to size it up

Serioulsy I would be freaking out Curval. What can you do if that thing hits you guys? Are there shelters or other places to you can go ride the storm out ?

Technically hurricane season started in June Rip.  It ends in early October.

BUT...it always seems to be late season storms that are the worst, particularly for us.  The early ones usually hit Florida or the east coast of the US.

There is already another one forming off the west coast of Africa..where the ones that we worry about always start.

It could be the start of a very active late hurricane season you're right.

The category 5 hurricane in 1927 actually benefitted the island in the long run.  The governor declared, after that storm, that ALL homes would henceforth be built from concrete, or later concrete block.

Every house here is like a hurricane shelter as a result.

The weak point though is the roof.  Pressure and wind gusts can litterally remove it.  I've seen it happen many times even in small hurricanes.

Ah, June, you're right. Thought it was later than that.  You can go to the GOES satillite website and see them forming over the Atlantic as they come off the African continent as wee little thunder boomers.  Pretty cool watching these thing grow over the days.

I remember watching one of those "stormwatch" type shows and this guy was telling the story about a hurricane he survived.

He was with his family in the house when the eye passed over. He decided to go to the garage for something, then the other side of the storm hit, blew his window out and sent long shards of glass into his chest nearly killing him.

My Friday meetings have been cancelled now.

Man...I AM beginning to get a bit concerned.

On the other hand I've been invited to 3 different hurricane parties.  ;)

j/k...if this hits I will be huddled up with the wife and kids in our back rooms.  The front room is all sliding glass doors which will be blown to smitherines.  We will stay well away from them.

Send me a pic of the Apts. you guys live in, I'll send it to one of our structural engineers and have him give you a percentage chance of surviving in the structure vs. wind speed. It be guesstimation at best due to not knowing the substructure.

11am update is not looking good Curv...

How many feet above sea level are you guys?  I was hearing something about 25+ft waves pelting Bermuda if it is a near miss. I haven't seen any storm surge predictions yet though.  I'd be packing up and flying outa there tomorrow, if I was you.

I've been through a few hurricanes and tropical storms and saw the aftermath of Andrew first hand.  Cat 3 and above is nothing to mess with.

I hear ya...storm surge is the real killer.  I don't know how high above sea level your home is...I know Kindley Field is like 10ft.  At its current strength, the storm surge would be somewhere between 13-18 ft.

Curval, when hurricane andrew hit back in 92 my house was right in the worst part of the storm. I'm damn glad our house was made of concrete block instead of wood. We lost half our roof and had an inch of water in the house but it stood. Alot of people in newer wood frame houses didn't fare so well. Their houses litally blew apart.

The worst part of the hurricane wasn't the hurricane itself. It was 6 weeks of no electricity, months of cleanup, hours in line for gas/food etc... Not to mention the year it took to get the house rebuilt.

If it hits and you decide to stay, I hope your armed. I don't know how things are down there, but in miami looters were everywhere.

Good luck!

Geeze I hope lazs doesn't read that part about being armed...

No guns allowed here TPI..I'll be armed with a 9-iron....I find that my wedge tends to stick in the skulls of those I whallop.

;)

I hear ya re: electricity etc.  I hope it doesn't go down too long.

We are well above any storm surge where we are Crow...about 200 feet above sea level.

Well Eagler it looks like I will be able to do just that.

The 5am Hurricane Center update shows that the closest point of approach is 15nm from the island.  Given that hurricane strength winds extend 110nm from the center it is gonna pretty much hit us "head-on".

The local advisory states:

Bermuda Public Forecast
Issued at 5:30 am - Thursday, 4th September, 2003
Headline - Fabian threatens Friday

Public Synopsis - Fabian approaches from the south and is expected to be an almost direct hit late Friday. Winds will steadily increase to hurricane force by Friday afternoon. Thunderstorms embedded in rain bands from Fabian will sweep through our area from tonight into Saturday.

A hurricane watch was issued a few minutes ago.

My wife and kids are hopefully flying to Toronto at 1.30pm.  I am staying to watch over the condo and the new house.

Tell you what...all kidding aside I am one person who will never make fun of Rip for his disaster preparation again.

Heh, I'm used to it. Before the Feb.2001 earthquake, I had a couple co-workers giving me crap about my preparation kit, generator and fuel...after the quake, they both started making their own kits.:)  I use the date 9/11 to 'rotate' stock, that way I don't forget to rotate it.

Curval, keep an hour by hour journal if you're staying behind.  You're wife and kids may get rich just off the "last entry" portion of it. ;)

Do you have a back up plan if the condo "goes"? Like a close-by emergency shelter you can access without exposing yoursellf to the high winds or tidal surge?

Leave Curv....not worth the risk.

Winds are dangerous....storm surge is even more dangerous. So many die here in Tornado Alley due to ignorance and the I'm going to be just fine attitudes.

I've been in two tornadoes...nothing funny about them and neither is there anything funny about a cat4 or cat 5 hurricane.

My wife and kids will be on the flight to Toronto...I will stay.  I hear ya Rude, but someone HAS to be here to make sure the condo and house is okay...post hurricane.  I'll get stuck in Toronto if I go.

Rip, didn't have time to look for the picture and all batteries were being charged for the camera.

I will be fine for the first half of the storm..we are well protected from the south.  Once the eye passes the storm will hit from the north.  THAT is when I have to be careful.

No-where to run..no-where to hide if things do get really bad without exposing myself to the wind etc.

I should be fine though.

The hurricane has actually lost a bit of its punch..now a cat 3.  But the service says it may increase again in the next 24 hours.

We shall see.

Nahhh Eagler!!!  The original settlers of Bermuda were British, then Virginians...with a Confederate mix included.  They'd rather die than leave.  It's part of them.

If Curval gets blown off the island, I have no doubt he will promply return to base and resume duty, even if he has to row back.:D

Update..from your friendly neighborhood hurricane weatherman:

Bermuda Public Forecast
Issued at 4:30 pm - Thursday, 4th September, 2003
Headline - Hurricane Warning

Public Synopsis - Fabian approaches from the south and is expected to be an almost direct hit late Friday. Friday morning will start with tropical storm force winds and steadily increase to hurricane force by Friday afternoon. We can expect embedded thunderstorms, heavy surf, storm surge and potential tornados to affect the island as Fabian passes by.

YIKES!

The CEO of the Electric Light Company said that this storm is going to make Emily look like a sugar coated candy stick...whatever that is.

Tornados scare me....me don't likey at all.

We are still hoping for a "wobble"...where the storm changes course just enough to cause significantly less damage.

Too late for that dude.  No more flights in or out after the London flight leaves at about 7.00pm.

But I'm happy that the wife and kids are out of here.  I spoke to her a few minutes ago and they are safely in Toronto.

Of course if the eye passes over us it will be calm as could be for a little while...then wham...it hits from the other direction.

It is gonna be a long day tomorrow.

I have my video camera battery all juiced up and without having to worry about the kids I'll get lots of footage.

Post by: rpm on September 05, 2003, 06:28:19 AM
From AP:

Hurricane Fabian picked up speed as it churned toward Bermuda, while businesses boarded up offices and islanders rushed to prepare for what could be the worst storm to hit in years.

Fabian was expected to slam into Bermuda by late Friday. Bermuda's government closed all of its offices and issued a hurricane warning Thursday ahead of the Category 3 storm.

Forecasters urged residents on the island chain to protect "life and property." Several cruise ships that were docked in Bermuda left early, and others were taking different routes to avoid the storm. All Friday flights into Bermuda were canceled.

Businesses sent staff home on Thursday and boarded up offices, while islanders withdrew money from banks and formed long lines at gas stations.

"Secure your residences, boats, and any moveable objects that may place you or your family in danger," Bermuda Premier Alex Scott said.

At 5 a.m. EDT Friday, Fabian was about 195 miles south of Bermuda, an island chain about 900 miles east of Charleston, S.C. The hurricane was moving north at 17 mph with sustained winds of about 120 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

Although it is one of the wealthiest islands with hurricane-resistant homes and a sturdy infrastructure, Bermuda hasn't seen a Category 3 hurricane since 1963, when Arlene destroyed crops and homes.

The last powerful hurricane to hit the British territory was Hurricane Emily in 1993, a Category 1 storm that tore off roofs, left homes without power for weeks and caused more than $50 million damage.

Forecasters said Fabian could knock some buildings off their foundations, damage crops and cause widespread flooding and erosion.

"It's a powerful hurricane and there's no indication it's going to fall apart," said Lixion Avila, a meteorologist at the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami.

Forecasters worried the storm could produce powerful tornadoes. Islands could lose power for days or weeks, said Gary Madeiros with the Bermuda Electric Light Co.

The government has opened up schools for use as evacuation shelters and urged people to leave 2,000 homes in flood-vulnerable areas.

Public Safety Minister Randy Horton also warned residents on Bermuda's south shore to either vacate their homes or board up properties.

Bartender Tanya Bartel said she was taking Fabian seriously and had duct-taped the windows of her north shore apartment.

"It's going to be close, if not a direct hit," she said. "If you have enough beer, ice, candles and cards to get through the weekend, you should be OK. The big talk is, 'do people have enough beer?'"

Bermuda's building codes specify that homes must be built with walls at least eight inches thick, and must be able to withstand 150 mph gusts and sustained winds of 110 mph.

(I'm glad to see the major concern is beer and ice!)

..and so it begins....

The winds are beginning to pick up and thunder is rumbling in the backgroud.

Apparently when the hurricane strength winds start they are going to turn off the power grid, in the hope that it will enable them to get it back up faster.

I've seen the US news and even they are talking about this as being a serious hurricane.

It's just so damn big.  They are talking about hurricane force winds for like 10 hours!

Sooooooo glad the wife and kids are in Canada.

Still here...we still have power, although my father just called and his is off.

My brother-in-law and I were going to go and check on the house quickly but by the time we got ready the wind and rain had picked up to a point where we said "To heck with that!"

There is a serious lull at the moment...looks like the sun might come out...but it won't last long.

The sea is frothy white...wind is picking up again now as I write this.

Here it come again...and this isn't even the hurricane force stuff yet.

ALTHOUGH THE EYE IS NOT VISIBLE AT THIS TIME ON SATELLITE
IMAGERY...MICROWAVE DATA STILL SHOWS THE PRESENCE OF A LARGE AND
WELL-DEFINED EYE. THIS WAS CONFIRMED BY DATA FROM A RECONNAISSANCE
PLANE THAT INDICATED THAT THE EYE WAS LARGE AND ELONGATED. THE
MINIMUM PRESSURE HAS RISEN TO 951 BUT FLIGHT LEVEL WINDS WERE 118
KNOTS.  THIS DATA SUPPORT AN INITIAL INTENSITY OF 105 KNOTS AT THIS
TIME. SOME FLUCTUATIONS IN INTENSITY ARE LIKELY WITHIN THE NEXT 12
TO 24 HOURS BUT A GRADUAL WEAKENING THEN SHOULD BEGIN
THEREAFTER...AS THE SHEAR INCREASES ANDTHE HURRICANE ENCOUNTERS
COOL WATERS. FABIAN SHOULD BEGIN TO BECOME EXTRATROPICAL BY 48
HOURS.

FABIAN IS MOVING NORTHWARD OR 355 DEGREES AT 15 KNOTS. FABIAN INNER
CORE IS EXPECTED TO PASS VERY CLOSE TO BERMUDA THIS AFTERNOON. IN
FACT...UNFORTUNATELY...THE PROJECTED TRACK BRINGS THE EAST EYEWALL
WITH THE STRONGEST WINDS OVER THE ISLAND. FABIAN IS READY TO
RECURVE AND IN ABOUT 12 TO 24 HOURS...IT WILL BE MOVING TOWARD THE
NORTHEAST WITH A SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN FORWARD SPEED.

BERMUDA IS ALREADY EXPERIENCING STRONG WINDS AND THE WEATHER SHOULD
GRADUALLY WORSEN. BERMUDA OFFICIALS AND RESIDENTS HAVE IMPLEMENTED
THEIR HURRICANE PLANS AND AT THIS TIME...WE CAN ONLY HOPE FOR THE

I'm about a 1/4 mile from shore jack.

Typing this quick 'cause I lost power in the middle of this post once already.

Just went to the south shore...amazing sight.  A frothing mass of water extends to the breakers (reefs) from what used to be Warwick Long Bay.  Outside of that is some Hawaii 5-0 type waves.

Direct hit will be happening..the eye should go right over us.  Gale force winds now..at least 60mph.

I was filming the surf and a blast of sand-filled air belted us.  We got out of there in a hurry..it really hurt.

We checked on Helm's Deep..prolly should go there it is like a rock.

Update if possible later.

**** (edit: was another word for doo doo)

My bet is that this guy is not exactly worrying about the ice machine right now...
Quote

"It's actually quite exciting. I've never been in one before so I don't know what it's going to be like," said Michael Matthews, a technology consultant visiting from Dublin, Ireland. "We've got gin, we've got white wine, we've got red wine and someone's got beer so we are well stocked up as long as the ice machine keeps going."

Don't know how bad this storm will be but no house or property is worth a wife losing her husband or kids without a dad.  If it is a really bad storm, bonehead move.

Weak storm and its hella fun :)

May not be so funny Animal.

HAMILTON, Bermuda, Sept. 5 —  The most powerful hurricane to hit Bermuda in 50 years slammed into the island chain, unleashing winds that snapped trees, knocked out power and tested the wealthy British territory’s vaunted ability to withstand a fierce storm. Four people were missing and feared dead.

Beats me, it just sounded funny.  I just remeber seeing a picture of him and his "date" dressed up at halloween.  Animal was a fairy if I recall (not a stretch) it looked like he had a huge nose and he just stepped out from behind the grease pit at Captain D's.

You should be ashamed of berating someone who has done so much for children-

Not to mention puppies-

Reports of my demise have been greatly exaggerated.;)

I'm fine guys.

What a ride though..whew.  Some crazy wind going on.  I had to call my wife in Toronto to try and figure out what was happening at around 7.00pm..all the radio stations went down..even the emergency one.  I had no idea wtf was going on.

When the eye hit the island the storm veered alomost 90 degrees and we only saw a very slight calm..then the wind kicked up from the west and blew like heck!  Then it curved around to the north and at that point I was just worried about my sliding glass doors.  They bowed in like 2 inches at some points.

Anyway..can't chat long..power still off at home, but the office is back up..nipped in to have a wash and a shave.  :)

I have pictures and some video that will be posted within a few days.

banana...wanted to call but didn't have your number handy when the power went off.

WTG Curval!

You were kind of a handsomehunk to go out in it.  You think sand hurts? You could have been decapitated by some stray Bermuda shorts, man.  I learned about flying debris as a storm chaser in Oklahoma when my lips were torn off by a flying badger, of all things.

I HAVE POWER!!!!!

Typing this from home now.  It's like Christmas Day almost.  I can have a shower, take a dump and flush the toilet, turn on the a/c and crack a cold one.

Luxury!

I think I am going to kiss the first BELCO (Bermuda Electric Light Company) person I see.

I'll post up the digital shots I have in a few minutes..but the good footage is on my video camera, so that will take a day or two.  The digital shots were the ones I took before the storm really hit..from the south shore..there is a small .avi video clip too...I'll post a link.

Animal...sorry to mess you up on that pool my drugan friend.  ;)

Creamo...lighten up on the booze dude.

One thing I should say is that I am really frigging proud of the people on this island.  We got rocked by a serious hurricane on Friday..on Monday I will be back in the office as if nothing happened.

Minor damage to Helm's Deep.  We lost three big trees..one an avacado tree which was broken at the base...and two palm trees which snapped in half.  I'll take some pics befopre it gets cleaned up.  Two big windows were broken by debris and an upstairs bathroom expoded outwards due to the pressure I think.

The condo was unscathed.

There is a sailboat that is smashed up on my father's dock...the corner of the dock has punctured a gaping hole in the from of the boat.  They will have to be careful getting it off as my dad's dock could go with the boat

Anyway...more later if you guys are interested.
