Very nice!

I just recently bought  Badger brush and compressor (love eBay!). And I'm looking forward to trying my hand at models again soon - after a couple of projects I needd to finish before Christmas. But seeing your 51 makes me want to go out and get myself a 47D and start it tonight :)

Looks like you used Testor's Chrome as the base paint?  Nice job on doing the anti-glare painting.  Excellent work on the decals - no ghosting.  What did you use for the heat shield around the exhaust stacks?  Hand-brushed silver?

Thanks guys

Gofaster I used Model Masters Metalizers for the finish. I first polished the bare plastic, then layed down some fine coats of buffing aluminum metalizer.

I then painted other panels with different shades of metalizer, masking the panels with wetted wrapping tissue. The heat shields are titanuim metalizer and everything on the model is airbrushed except for the front canopy .

I nearly destroyed this model by painting it over 3 times.....while removing the paint the last time,  I used a thinner that attacked the plastic and broke the wings off and pitted the plastic.

I can say this was a learning experience for me, as it is my first model with a natural metal finish.

I'm lazy.  I usually just use the spraycan of Testor's Chrome over all silver parts, then hand-brush the details and variances in the panels with Silver, or Aluminum, or Steel, and maybe some black wash on the landing gear joints to simulate grease and bring out the details in the shocks.   I mostly build 1/72 so I can get away with this method a bit better on the smaller kit than I could on a larger 1/48 kit.

Castrol Super Clean is great for removing paint from plastic without damaging the plastic.  ;)

Yours looks much better than mine.  I suck worse than I thought.  I need to work on my patience.

Martlet a lot of the thing is to get a nice airbrush, second get a good kit,  the other is patience like you said.

I bought 2 P-51  kits at the same time, one Tamiya, the other a Hasegawa P-51 ( because the store had only 1 Tamiya). I'm making the Hasegawa now, probably gonna give it to Steve with our squad logo on it ( Rat Bastards Of America, when we get a logo)

I have to say that the Hasegawa is a few notches down in quality  compaired to the Tamiya. In fact Tamiya kits are consistantly better than any other IMO.

The Hasegawa version has flash mold marks all over the plastic, shallow gear bays and less surface detail.

Steve, if I can make this kit good enough, I'm coming over to your house with it :)

westy, AKWeav, Ramzey thanks

Ramzey you mean for the decals? I use micro set for most and micro sol for the really hard one's that have hard curves and bends.

Nice P-51. Well done NUKE.  I would say the only thing it needs now is some exhaust smoke stains after teh exhaust stack. Every warbird should have some smoke stains.

I don't have an airbrush.  I use those little model paints.

Same here.  That and spray cans.

For brushpainting, I use acrylic flats because they tend to hide brush strokes best.  If I want a glossy finish, I'll brush-paint flat acrylic, then spray Testor's Gloss Cote over it and then glue in the canopy and other clear parts (Gloss Cote with fog the clear plastic).

Sorry, I couldn't start a new thread since Im on probation....

I just finished this FW, slightly weathered ( can't tell that much by pics)

It's a Tamiya 1/48th scale

Anyway, if you are viewing DiabloTx, your model is next...this was my warm-up.

Nice job on that tailwheel.  I can never get them quite right.  And I'm worse on the landing gear.

Thanks again guys. I really enjoy making these models. I seem to be learning new little tricks with each new one I complete.

My favorite part is painting them I think.

Gofaster, thanks for noticing that tailwheel :) For tires I mixed my own rubber color ( kinda a real dark grey with a little yellow mixed in) I also ran a wash over the gear, bays, and panel lines.

Jack55, that P-51 is painted with differing shades of paint. The paint is Model Masters Metalizers, and they can be buffed to look like real metal. That bugger took me 3 complete paint jobs to get it right, as the metalizers are VERY delicate and flake of or rub through if you look at them funny. After it's all painted, then it's sealed with Future floor wax to protect it.

I'm going to be starting a massive FW190 project soon.... It's DiabloTX's 1/24th scale! The thing is big. He requested that I post differing stages of completion as I build it. I don't know if you guys ( Oclub) would mind seeing that or not.

If not maybe I can make a small website for it and my other models.

Thanks again guys

I'll have to custom-mix up a batch of that and give it a try. Thanks for the idea!

One thing I've started doing is painting a base coat of flat white as a primer, then a coat of dark brown (Poly Scale model RR color Roof Brown) then a wash or two of black for texture and darkening.  Since I do 1/72 almost exclusively, its such a small piece that it works ok, but I like the job you did on the tailwheel so much I may try mixing up the color you describe.  I particularly like the metal effect of the tailwheel strut.

So what are you going to do for an antennae wire?  I've heard some guys use a real thin wire that's been run through a pair of pliers for straightening, but I've never tried it.

Im afraid to try the antenna wire, lol.... I picture myself ruining the canopy.

I might try thin wire and see if I can not destroy anything :)

I've tried separating a length of wire from the twisted strands of speaker wire, with limited success.  It retains the twisty look to it and doesn't look like it has tension to it.  Then again, I haven't tried stretching it with pliers.  That might be the trick to it.

One thing I have learned is that sewing threat won't work right.

I haven't tried light-test fishing line yet, though.
