Title: Gotta say the CT has been rockin of late
Post by: nopoop on September 02, 2003, 10:30:10 PM
Been fun the last week, the zeros and the f4f's, now the 109's, FM2's and the La5's.

Lotsa fightin goin on in there.

WAY more fightin then the main. Been a good time.

Shane ya BASTAGE, FIRST sortie of the tour and you get a sleeper..

I repaid the kindness to 10Bears..

190's are fragile also when asleep at the stick...

Good fun.

for the good fights.

Somebody who never thought the CT would be for them may read this and decide to give it a try.

yep... when the big maps with their strange field spacing are up.... the CT is the way to go..  more and more people are seeing that.   I hate the axis vs allied thing but there are some decent sets in the early mid war years... unfortunately the 190 reared it's ugly, timid head in the fin rus setup..

if it didnt i wouldnt have played the setup much :) I like FM2's and hurris etc but not with La5s and yaks everywhere. LW needed something to counter the La5s. I think its a damn fine ballance myself

not really... the 190's are invulnerable and untouchable.   the yak is useless... why would the russians have a tank buster for killing airplanes?  the other yak would have been more balanced.   The La5 is a good balance for the 109's but the 190's simply promote (force) timid behavior in an otherwise great fight.

I really can't see how 190s are untouchtable when La-5FN is good 20mph faster than it on the deck and remains faster until around 15000ft. It also climbs better until 13000ft and is so much more maneuverable.

Yak-9U is a 1944 plane which was never operational against Finland. With its speed and performance it would be totally out of place in this setup. We used Yak-9T as it resembles more closely the performance of the Yak-9, Yak-9D, Yak-7 and Yak-1 fighters operational against Finland. It's still over-gunned compared to these planes by far.

Also there was no LA-5FNs operational against Finland in the fall of 1943 where this setup concentrates. In fact it was very rare even during the summer of 1944.

So because of the plane set we have in AH USSR has a BIG advantage in this setup.

But actually I hope the plane set would turn you away from the CT since I really don't like finns to be called nazi sympathizers again...

Do my eyes deceive me? Nopoop and lazs having fun in a historical slanted arena?

Hell has likely frozen over, or a least is experiencing global cooling.

More importantly...

Oh yeah, I go in the CT everytime the main arena crashes -- maybe twice/year.

I'm sure the CT is fun for some of you.  That's great!  The MA is fun for another group.  That fact seems extremely hard for some folks to understand.

Like I said, it's hard for some folks to understand and it would be a gigantic surprise if you understood it. :)

To make FinRus realistic, we would need a Yak-9D and LA-5(no FN) and a real Brewster of course. The subtitute we now have is too ugly, too lazy, and too fast.

Well....it didn't last long.

Last night was our squad night and we decided to spend it in the CT.

I had told the guys of the great fights the previous four days and how 5k seemed to be the hard ceiling as well as no strat porking GV drivin crap like you always see in the MA.

Well, last night the CT was full of new players hellbent on field capture....the steamroller was alive and well. The gameplay last night was so similar to the MA that the fun was just not there like the week before.

I hope this was a fluke....be a shame to have a mini MA type of play in both arenas.

the CT is basically a mini-MA, as soon as you realize that, you're on the road to perdition.

you guys were lazy and apparently just not in the mood to really whack those seals properly.  using another base, approx 20-25 miles away, "close" by any standards comapred to 30-50 miles on some MA maps, and coming in at 10k, even 8k, you coulda sent those seals right back to tower and went to meet 'em 1/2 on their way back.

that's what i did after i switched to balance nbrs out.

there was an unbelievable amout of gv action tho', partly due to impending dusk, and i guess the lure of free tigers.  sometimes a gv melee can be a fun change of pace.

I agree with you Shane...trust me, all of the 13th know how to get kills.

Problem was, I so enjoyed myself the last few days with the quick low alt fights, that I was disapointed to find a more MA like enviroment last night.

Truthfully, the problem is all mine. I've become an adrenaline junky....no patience accompanied with the desire to best those flying with the advantage....trouble with that mindset is while I'm busy besting, their friends come along and ruin my fun.

Been doin this too long I'm afraid.

It all settles out, Rude.  Some sort of advertisement (such as, "rude says it's cool to be in CT") (or "hey, spit 14s with no perk points") brings MA people in.  They stay and behave in MA style, e.g., ganging, porking, landgrabbing.  Then the losers go back to the MA.  The others come  back to CT for its nice points, and they stay.  Apologies to your squad for the ugliness of the first night, but have them come back on a Monday, or a Wednesday, or a Sunday, to see what real fun can be.

There is something wrong with landgrabbing in the CT?

I think there is a general sense that landgrabbing is counterproductive in the CT, for at least two reasons.

First, it doesn't get you anything in the long run.  If you take all the bases, the map is destroyed and no one can play in the CT until it is reset.  You don't want to become known as the person who did this.

Second, most of the CT players (n.b., this is a result of a non-scientific sampling) think that the CT is a place to have aerial combat against balanced opposition (even in bombers).  So the tactics of the successful landgrab - massed numbers, porked fuel at adjoining bases, vulching, suicide runs - are frowned upon as detracting from balanced combat, rather than enhancing it.

The foregoing generalities will not apply on certain occasions, most notably on squad nights, when the desire to work together detracts from the notion of balance (it does, however, increase the numbers present in the CT, which hopefully brings in more players, which hopefully balances the numbers, &c. &c.).  As a rule, though, the CT is not a place that is "just like a real war."  Sort of odd, actually, given that it's the only place in AH that duplicates the Axis v. Allied nature of the real real war.

I dunno oldman.....are you not doing the same thing that is frowned upon any just about any arena but the TA and DA? Establishing a set of rules that you decide should be followed? I would think anyone who shows in the CT arena has every right to bomb and land grab as he choses. I mean everyone paid the same dues to show up there. :)

Having said that, I personally dislike land grabbing and prefer a good dogfight any day of the week.

Just some ramblings from an old phuart.

Ren
Damned if we do. No fun if we don't.

I've handed down no mandate to the 13th members regarding flying the CT....I'm sure that many of us will continue to visit, especially when it's dark in the MA or when the large maps are up.

I'm happy Dale has given us choice thru variety.
