DEPP....................our german friends can translate.
Bwahahaha, he really is a "Depp".Here is a DEPP (http://edition.cnn.com/2003/SHOWBIZ/Movies/09/03/depp.us.reax.reut/index.html)
I wonder if good old Johnny knows what his name means in German.
-
"I was ecstatic they re-named 'French Fries' as 'Freedom Fries'. Grown men and women in positions of power in the U.S. government showing themselves as idiots," he told Stern.
I agree with him on that point.
-
That was kinda childish yes :D
-
Heh and I was kinda gettin used to my "Freedom Toast" for breakfast....
:D
-
Childish, maybe. However, it does convey the anti-french sentiment still held by many Americans. So many that if Germany once again decided to annex France there would be many Americans violently opposed to offering any help to France. Go for it Germans, here's yer chance.
-
Did you really rename french fries to freedom fries!!? I taught it was some madonion joke..
"Freedom fries", could it be any cheesyer?

You underestimate the value we Americans place on friendship and loyalty and the anger we feel when betrayed.

You fail to realize that the vast majority of Americans have no idea what goes on in Congress and therefore our representatives (pulling in $154,700 a year) can pretty much waste our tax dollars on whatever publicity stunt they feel fit.
The fact that the Committee on House Administration took time to address this pet project makes me ill.

This is rich. France disagreed with the U.S. position on Iraq and this is somehow betrayal.
Another opinion brought to you by Fox news. Be sure to tune in folks!
-
^ You act as if this is the first time France has sided against us.
I've disliked the French looooong before Iraq.

It was only the latest of many betrayals by France. When you look at the larger picture which includes the safety and survival of our way of life and France's opposition to helping us at every opportunity it becomes clear who our friends aren't. Of course we've been over and over this many times here on this bb so I'll no longer belabor this point. At least until there is another jab to our back.
Depp's immigration to France and his insults from there just opened the wound a bit.

Hmmm... we didn't seem to get freedom fries then.

At least AKIron and Mighty1 are right on one point : I'm not your friend and will never be.
qu'est-ce que je m'en fout de votre opinion ...c'est dramatique à quel point je m'en tape.

You're just upset you can't play in the pro league.
Back to the minors with you.

I respect an honest enemy far more than a back stabbing friend.

You obvioulsy didn't bother to learn your own history (no need to back far in the past 60 year should be more than enought)

This is the great folly of the Right Wing in this Country.. they espouse FREEDOM only until it creeps outside their comfort zone, which is smaller than Eddie Gaedel's strike zone.
-
An even greater folly of the left is that they think freedom is free.

I thought that was the right. They seem willing to throw it all away in exchange for security.

Certainly not. Not me at least. It isn't an all or nothing thing, we all make compromises every day. Only the simple see things in only black and white.
-
Exchanging a little freedom for security is like exchanging a little of your virginity for sex.

Are we gonna do this again? Do you wear a seat belt in your car?

I think we probably agree to some extent. I simply loath any compromise in Constitutionally guaranteed freedoms in exchange for security.

hang on... I'm looking up the "seatbelt" amendment now. :p

what exactly does this have to do with freedom?
but ok, yes I do. do I think it should be a law? no I don't.
-
Hehe, my three year old grandson with whom I spent about 8 hours in the car this last weekend, felt his freedom impinged greatly.

It is a law in many states, mine included. It is but one example of the many freedoms we surrender for safety/security. I'm sure I can name many more if you want.

doesn't really prove your point though. just another example of people willing to trade freedom for safety. (only worse because they are trading other peoples freedom for other peoples safety, really none of there damn bussines).
just because it seems to be the trend doesn't make it right
-
I think you missed my point. I'll make it again. We make many compromises daily, some are less significant than others, i.e., seatbelts vs long lines at airports where everything you own including your swinging **** is subject to inspection. Without law (read restriction) there would be chaos with the strong abusing the weaker.
-
we make compromises from our ability to do as we damn well please.
but we should draw the line at things that violate constitutional rights (most of the patriot act, for example), and things that are none of our damn bussiness (seatbelt and helmet laws as an example)
there is a huge difference between laws to protect others from our actions and us from theirs, and laws that violate peoples rights and freedom for the percieved feeling of security, or so some burocrat can say he did something about a problem.

If you'd like to converse with me in my native tongue, on an American BBS, feel free. I'm assuming since you are asking in a language I don't understand, you don't expect an answer.
-
If you want my feelings on the subject of freedoms capt, we've already lost far too many. However, I find it hypocritical to moan only about losing specific rights to further a political agenda. This is an old debate and I was foolish to reengage.
-
I hear what you're saying. but if we only complain about a couple then say 'we've lost so many already whats the point of complaining now', then it just keeps going.
the only hope for stopping it is for those who are pissed off to stay pissed off, and as the rights keep get taken away more are offended and add their voice to the noise.
as it is those who would sell our freedoms for proffit or percieved safety, just have to keep robbing us in small increments and just not piss off too many at once. get mad and stay mad (btw- this is completely non-partisan, both parties screw us like this over and over).
If you're not mad, you're not paying attention.
edit for the language filter- oops

Jonah Goldberg sums it up nicely.
DEPP ETC [Jonah Goldberg]
I don't particularly care that Johnny Depp has unkind things to say about America or the Bush Adminsitration. To date, not a single thoughtful person in Christendom has found it necessary to consult his views before making an informed decision. That said, what I do find hilarious is that all of the Europeans do care. I mean, these are the same folks who say that American culture is leading to the cretinization of the world and that Hollywood values are shallow, low-brow and materialistic. And yet, the second an American movie star opens his mouth on politics these people applaud
-
It is possible to like America and Americans and still disagree some of the policies of the current (or any other) Administration.
