I'm leaving for a 4 day camp trip in about 5 hours. Post your favorite campsite and/or camp trip you've taken. :)
-
never been!
-
Lake Baikal, Baikal ridge, 1993. Ukrainian Carpathians, 1989. Southern Urals, 1987.
All were 4 weeks, up to 300km in the mountains.
I miss mountain hiking. Last time I went to the mountains was 5 years ago :(
-
I've camped throughout much of South America. That was quite the experience.
I'd have to say my favorite camping trips are my annual ones with college buddies. Every summber we go for 4 nights.
-
Rip...Does spending the night in the Bomb Shelter count?

Just went a couple of weeks ago to Lake Timpanogas in the Willamette National Forest. When they say heavy mosquitos, they actually mean INFESTED WITH MOSQUITOS. It was a really beautiful spot, but the mosquitos were out in full force and they weren't taking any prisoners. Probably better after the first snowfall, but also more trecherous to get to.

Anything that doesn't include any of the following is okay by me:
Cabins
RV's
Toilets
Faucets
Beer
Canned foods of any kind
Propane
In other words... it must be a minimum of 10 miles walk and you must carry everything you need on your back. Fishing is preferable but not necessarily a requirement.

I agree, excepted for the beer part. To me, a beer is best far from civilization, cooled in a stream, and consumed with friends over a campfire while frying fresh brook trout. I always lug 2 or 3 in. You really can't take much more unless it's just an overnight trip, because of the weight.
I also bought an aluminum case for my fly rod, and put a grip boot on the bottom. It makes an excellent walking stick.

ah... camping.... mg42 pointed at the exit of the spawn point in DoD.... ah... the joy of machine guns... :D

Actually my favorite was a 4 day hike that included attaining the 9 highest peaks in Southern California. Before you laugh Oh geographically wanting ones... these peaks ranged from 11,500ft to 10,700ft.
-
I didnt mean to raise my hand...its these GAWD DAAMN FLIES! AAAIIIIEEEEE
Haven't camped in a while...have all the equipment...usually go in the fall or early spring...less flies...pretty cold...but just the way i like it.

Beer is too heavy to carry it in a backpack in decent quantities :( So we prefer pure spirit.
Canned food is nice, but too heavy if you go for more then one week. Modern sublimated food is light but tasteless.
Propane is nice, much better then "primus" gasoline stove, at least it doesn't explode when you are cooking in a tent, and you can smoke without worries about the gasoline canisters.
As for me - the biggest problem is to get far enough from people with radios and cars.
-
Probably Crantock, Cornwall shortly after graduating in 2000 with my uni friends. Had some great beach parties. Haven't seen some of those people in ages.
-
I'd love to go camping but I don't know anyone else hardcore enough to go. When I mention "camping" people start talking about renting cabins, towing popup trailers etc... Nobody wants to go someplace where there are no utilities.
About the closest thing to camping I can get is an afternoon out 4wheeling in the jeep. And even thats extremely rare.

Butane is preferable as it does not need the high pressure (read heavy) cylinder that propane does; however, butane is bad news for winter camping...

"The shack" in the winter.
About the same size as the cabin in SOB's picture without the lean-to. It is about a 3 to 6 mile walk depending on how snowed in the road that runs near the cabin is and if the ice on the lake is thick enough to walk on.
It was built on Provincial park land in the early seventies but hasnt been taken care of in at least ten years. When i first started going there it was just an open room with a bench and a wood burning stove. A friend of mine and I built two 4 by 8 bunks to make it more "liveable.
They havent trucked wood in to the cabin during the summer for many years and we burned all the surplus about 4 years ago. It is super illegal to cut down trees in a provincial park, but fortunatley a chain saw sounds exactly like an ice auger :)

This cans are labeled "natural gas" here, so it must be butane, as you said.
It's unbelievable how the equipment progressed here in the last 15 years. And it's hard to imagine how people went hiking back in the 60s, with cotton tents and cottonwool sleeping bags... I have never carried more then 40-45kg of starting weight, and at that times people could have 70kg...
-
haven't been able to go this year (been laid-up all summer, no way I could survive a night sleeping on the ground this year)
but we have a sweet spot (exact location is a family secret) up on the lolo pass (between lost lake and zig-zag).
I usually manage 4 or 5 trips a year anywhere from 3 to 7 days each.

We have a 18' trailer I tow with my truck. The kids (4 and 7) get the tent (they prefer the tent) and Mom and Dad get to try to rock the trailer off the stabilizing jacks. :)

The best places to go camping?
Lost Lake, CO. (15,000 ft up - Prepare to hike or 4X4)
Jackson Hole, WY. (Again, hiking required)
Grand Canyon, AZ (Hiking or Boat)
Woods Canyon Lake, AZ (4X4 and Hiking required)
The Bradshaw Mountains, AZ (4X4 and hiking and this is where I go to pan for gold)
The Verde Hot Springs, AZ South of the Childs power station (4X4 and hiking both required, clothing optional)

My favorite camping trip was on Petit Bois Island, just west of Dauphin Island, for four nights and 5 days. We consumed 14 cases of beer, 1 gallon of Burgundy wine, and didn't lack for anything. It was paradise, as we ate blue crabs by the dozens, and ate Skipjack fish too...only thing we could catch from the boat trolling, but they were 3' long and big and good eating. Skipjack is good fish, good white meat, but lots of little bones, and I guess that's why folks don't eat them.
I stepped on a broken beer bottle one morning near the bonfire after I just woke up. Danced around and then stepped on a hot coal with my other foot. Had to keep my foot on ice for a whole day, but we were so medicated, I got through it, and could walk on it after about 12 hours.:D

Spend several weekends a year camping and hunting. From the Mogollon Rim to the deserts around Yuma.

One of the best was hiking to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. Damn that was a fun trip.
-
I enjoy camping....at Holidomes.
-
Algonquin Provincial Park, about 2 hours north of Toronto. Most beautiful place I've ever been. 4 days in a canoe, with nothing but what you've carried in with you.
Normal camping is fun, but it ain't real camping unless you have nothing but what you brought with you.

I raise my finger.. (just kidding)

Stopping at a park in california late one night w/ a knockout Blond about 2 am .... ( the sprinklers came on )

I go every year, its called DEER OR ELK CAMP. My new house in montana backs up to the Selway Bitterrrot wilderness, no privet land or roads for 100+miles until you get into Idaho. :D :D :D
I'm a happy boy, my days of living to work are over, now comes working to live, a much better way of life. I expect my blood pressure will go down 20 points as soon as that U-haul leaves California!

Lake Mohave, NV. Labor Day Weekend. My daughter caught her first fish (look closely, she snagged it with hook through lower lip). Great times!

I was at Norton AFB near San Bernardino for several weeks in '90. The smog was so bad that I was there for three days before I realized there were mountains nearby. No kidding.

Bumped for SOB
Hey, SOB, this looks like a great spot. I'm considering a trip down to Oregon this summer. , any fish in that lake? Is there a boat ramp nearby?
MT, sold my Layton last night. I got full price, to the first buyer. Obsessive Cleaning Disorder pays off again! :) Now I'm "homeless" :( Picking up my Dads 11.5ft. slide in camper this June.

When I was your age, I'd just pack up (in a back pack) a lightweight sleeping bag (Down-feathered) and a little bunson burner with a mess kit, food, and mandantory alcohol and weed, and hit the trails on week ends. Kinda hard to do that with baggage nowadays (wife, kids) :p
-
I spend one week every year hiking in the mountains. Hope i get to do it this year too but i doubt it

Now yer confusing this old fart!

Although i suspect why you would be confused, my reason is that my gf may have something to say about me leaving for the trip this year cause we will have a very young daughter that may delay some traditions. :)

Spending a week locked into an overpriced luxury hotel room with two hopelessly deprived young ladies is my idea of camping.
Room service anyone?

When you visit, I'll show you my polaroids of a girl from Sweden, skinny dipping on mountain lake with the sun coming over the mountain tops. ;) Ahhh, the days of wine, women and song...

It's a really beautiful spot and there are plenty of trails to hike and you can easily walk around the lake. No boat launch that I recall, but it's a small lake and there are no motorized boats allowed...or needed, really. The shelter we rented from the forest service was pretty simple, which was nice, and was on one side of the lake by itself, while the camping spots were on the other side of the lake. It even had a clean and odor free outhoused (until a couple of rangers came and tossed in a dead body or some bacteria stuff to break down the filth, we weren't sure which ;):()
However, I really can't recommend it. It's quite a drive up there, and the last 3 miles is a winding gravel fire road that has nonstop water runoff grooves perpendicular to the roadway - it's like driving by brail the whole way and you can't go more than about 10 mph. There are swarms of bees there that appear anytime you bring out meat or anything sweet - they weren't particularly interested in stinging, but were quite annoying. The mosquitos were incredible though, and were in full force from sunup to sunset. I got at least 40-50 bites and a couple of my friends had more. Two of us brought poles (me included) and never got a bite, though we didn't bring any live bait. I talked to a guy on the other side of the lake who had the same experience (he was out in a canoe every dusk fishing). I'm pretty sure they stock the lake though, so there's probably something in there at some point during the summer.
So it's really beautiful, but there are probably quite a few other beautiful places that don't have the same problems. Check the web site in the link above for all of the options in the Willammette National Forest, and you can check the Oregon Parks Service (http://www.prd.state.or.us/) website too.

I grew up in Alaska and have camped among its ocean beaches, lakes, rivers, mountains and forests. When I lived in Hawaii my wife and I did some illegal camping on Oahu, Kawai, and the Big Island. When we moved to the states we camped for four months all over the South East US at temperatures over 100 at night. Then we drove down the Alaska Highway and camped at temperatures below zero; that sucked.
The worst is trying to camp with little kids. In the backyard we do a trial run once a summer, but we always go back into the house in the middle of the night because the girls won’t sleep and won’t let us sleep either.
