I live in Louisville. The Air National Guard has had : P-51s, B-58s, F-4 Phantoms, and currently has C-130s. I heard from some ROTC kids at college though that the ANG is getting 8 training jets (double seat F5s I think).
So, any neat planes stationed in your home town?
-
C17s and C5s, at Y73.
-
What is Y73? Please use real town names instead of making stuff up :)
-
Y73 is secret;)
-
Our small county airport (Montgomery County, located in Conroe, Texas) has
- Approximately 10 Apaches
- Three or four Texan's (the trainer plane)
- A Mig (complete with mg and cannon barrels attached)
- Probably 30+ small Cesena-type private planes
- And no more than 15 corporate jets
Note that our county airport also serves as an Army Reserve base also.
Took my boy to see the Fifi then B-29 and an early B-26 there also during a special showing. Even toured the inside of Fifi.
I might go to the airport and take some picture of the Mig. I'm sure that the guns don't work but the barrells are still there and seeing the size of the cannon barrell is quite impressive. Kinda gives you some perspective on 20 or 30 mm cannons.
-
I've been inside a B29 called "Fifi". Is that the same as "GiGi"? There is also a P-51 and P-40 at Louisville International Airport, along with the entire UPS airfleet.
-
Thank you david.
It's too early for me to be posting and I'm sober to boot :D
-
Drunky,
It's 5pm somewhere in the World... Bottoms up! LOL
-
Civilian:
-A bunch of various cessna & beech from the local training academy.
-A pair of those Canadair firefighter seaplanes.
-The occasional 737 or A320.
Military:
C-212 Aviocar (small transport)
C-101 jet trainer
We used to have a bunch of Mirage F-1 around... those are really "muscle fighters", once you hear one of them scream, all other jets seem a bit sissy in comparison

Hehe I live 40 minutes east of CFB Moose jaw (I grew up in Moose Jaw.)
Up until 3 years ago, I woudl see on a daily basis:
CC-130 Hercs
CF-18 Hornets
and very often a group of 9 CT-114 Tutors.

The closest airstrip to me is Willow Grove NAS.
Mostly C130's, F18's, and the ANG operates a boatload of A10's from the field.

Y73 is Rhein Main.

I work about 1 mile off the North end of the field at March ARB. Mostly C-141's and KC-10's. Every Thurs. and Fri. though the ANG practices in their F-16's. They always take off towards our plant. Stay low for a bit to build speed athen do a high yo yo / Immelman back toward the base. It is very loud, and close enough to clearly see the vapor trails off the wings.
Once in a while a C-5 or C-17 will fly in... that is amazing to watch. Also have the backup to AF-1 parked there whenever GWB is in the area.
-
A couple of planes which i dont really care about, and then theres the Avro Vulcan siiting at the back:D

We have a major AF base in Tucson that has EC130's OA10's as primary aircraft. There is planning in motion to bring in F15's and phase out the OA10's but it hasn't seemed to start yet.
The civilian airport (TUS) has an ANG base on it and they do the international training for friendly countries who purchase F16's. They are REAL busy and fly every week day. The Guardsmen pilots still have their once monthly weekend drils and fly on the first weekend of th month. They have visiting units come by so we see F15's and sometimes other birds like Tornado's and Harrier's as well.
Since I work about 250 yards from the runway I kinda wish they could put mufflers on the 16's. ;) The mil power takeoffs are bad but the full burner ones are real nasty. They are limited to only 10% of activity for burner activities. Car alarms ALL over the airport start going off when the 16's are taking off. :)

I work at the airport too. The parking lot is directly under the flight path. When the UPS 747s are taking off they are so loud that you can't even hear the person next to you, even if they are yelling.

bunch of private type planes...but 1 of the flight club members is loadmaster on b17g "sentimental journey" and flight engineer in a heinkel he111...

A Goon! or 2...
Well i think so anyways... any easy way to tell a dc3 from a dc4?
One is converted to turbo prop too.
Also an An2? i think thats it... the huge russian bipe..
An AT-6 as well, a few kits.

Berra - do you live near Southend? That's where the last Vulcan was that I knew about. I went to the 1990 50th Anniversary of Battle of Britain at Boscombe Down. The Vulcan was there. It was the LOUDEST aircraft I saw all day! A little before that, I was flying my motor glider from Exeter to Enstone. I passed north of Portland Bill and had to take avoiding action on a Vulcan. He had climbed higher than his 2000' clearance.
Nearest airport to me is White Waltham, which has the longest grass runway in Europe. Nearest "big" airport is LHR - London Heathrow, the world's busiest airport. Too many planes to list, but given that they fly right over my village, I like the quiet ones! But I shall miss this one, which makes my windows rattle twice a day sometimes, and jingles my glassware. But it is to be retired next month.

i live near the old Handley-Page factory. Used to go over there and play when we were kids, it is turned into a film studio now - and we had fun jumping the fence and sitting on the scud launcher there when they were filming goldeneye.
Must have been quite a sight in the 40's when they were rolling halifax's out of there.
There is also an old BAe factory near here, i think they built the BAe 146 and Hawk there. When it was DeHavilland they built the Mosquito, Hornet, and Comet (+many more) there.
The DeHavilland Mosquito was designed at Salisbury Hall (about 5 mins from here, there is a small museum there now)

The Museum of Flight in Seattle (http://www.museumofflight.org/collections/)
Overall, the Museum's collection includes 131 air- and spacecraft and over 19,000 other artifacts, including 856 instruments, 1,103 models, 1,967 articles of apparel and textiles, 134 engines, 30 oral histories, and the balance in radios, armament, accessories, tools, and ephemera. The Museum also maintains an important archival collection with 100,000 photographs; 100,000 negatives; 20,000 books; 66,200 periodicals and industry publications; 10,000 lantern slides; 2,000 films, videos, and audio-tapes;145 feet of manuscripts; and numerous plans, vellums, albums, and graphics relating to the history and technology of flight in the Pacific Northwest and beyond. One of our largest artifacts is the Red Barn, the National Register site which was the headquarters of the original Boeing Airplane Company and the oldest aircraft factory in North America.
That should about cover it :p

I think you said you lived near St. Albans. Would that HP/BAe factory be the one at Hatfield?
I used to work for BAe at Weybridge. They had excess capacity and had to lose a factory site. They chose Weybridge because the land value had tripled when the M25 was completed - Weybridge is just inside. I've been back since (an American car rally c1991) and didn't recognize the place. But I assume the old Vickers workshops were still there. They are listed buildings dating from c1915.
-
No, the BAe plant at hatfield was DeHavilland's i think in ww2 and before.
The Handley-Page factory is at Frogmore, kinda inbetween St. Albans and Radlett. It is not visible from the road so unless you know the area well then you probably wouldnt notice it.
I think they only moved from there when they were building the Victor V-bomber. Apparently the runway was too short.
They used to fly airships from there in the 80's i think, but i was a little young so cant remember exactly when.

Not sure what you mean by "your airport"... but there's quite a few airports in the area with quite a few vintage aircraft.
Evergreen/McMinnville airport has around 43 flyable aircraft from 1909-1970s (military and civilian) and the Flight Museum has the Spruce Goose and an SR-71... along with numerous WW2 aircraft.
While at the beach just south of Tillamook last month, a Fw-190 flew over en rout to the Tillamook air museum. Quite a few vintage WW2 fighters fly around there (Was where Jeff Ethyl crashed in a P-38).
Also, across the river in Vancouver, Washington is a few private owners that have and/or are restoring WW2 planes including P-51s and F4us.
Oh... and "Texans" are pretty much everywhere.

C130s and a ****load of KC-135s. 440th Air Refueling wing stationed at Gen. Mitchell International in Milwaukee.
oh, and an F4J Phantom and B25 Mitchell (as a monument/display type thingy).
We also have F16s stationed near Madison.

Isn't that a IX? Has a 4 bladed prop, pointed tail, looks like 2 radiators and the scoop under the nose?

Hamburg Intl has the usual commercial stuff. No idea about anything else, except for a Ju-52.
Finkenwerder has that giant Airbus Beluga thing occasionally.

Lots of Cessnas

I didn't know there were any airworthy 190's... do you have info on this plane?
Thanks.

Easiest way to tell the difference between a DC-3 and a DC-4 is to look at the wings. The DC-3 is like our Goon in AH, a DC-4 has 4 engines and tricycle landing gear (Nose gear in front, not tail gear in back :) )

No I don't. Just saw it fly over. It may not have been a 190 as my LW view of aircraft is usually obscured by tracer fire... but I'm pretty sure it was. Find how many times I've answered the "what plane is this" questions in the aircraft forum and you might get a feel for how much weight to put behind that.

There is a flying 190 replica at the Fargo Air Museum in ND. It is like 1/3 scale or something. I myself couldnt fit in the darn thing. (And im not a big guy.) The cockpit stands up to my sternum..or less.
Maybe ghosth will see this thread and post a pic of it.
They also have a flying P-51 (which you can ride in), a TBM, a few SNJs, a C47, a Stearman, a PT19, an F4U, an F2G-1D Super Corsair (the only one left), a B25, a couple Grasshoppers, and soon the only Zeke left flying. (it wont have the original engine) All these fly on a weekly basis if not daily.
Best part is the staff at the musuem. When i was there in July I was allowed to climb on all the planes. The best was the P-51.

I live near and work at Nellis AFB in Las Vegas, NV. We just recently had Red Flag. So during this time we had pretty much the finest combat aircraft in the world here for a short stay. It's really cool to stand outside and watch everything fly by. usual aircraft seen are F-15, F-16, F-18, Blackhawk, AWACS, KC-135, and there are 2 F-22s here now, usually followed by a (relatively) poor bastard in an F-15. Relatively, because I'm sure we would all like to fly an F-15.
Anyone ever wonder where all the air-def and such are at a military installation. The US is very good at not boldly showing weapons, except on highly visible platforms (ie, tanks, ships, aircraft). Until recently, it was rare to see a unifromed soldier at base with armament. Conversely, you go to Mexico and they attempt to make a show of it, with everybody having an M-16 at checkpoints and such. I guess we don't have to prove anything.

f-15As and B's for the Air Guard
UH-60s and -1s for the army guard
falcon lear jets and jayhawks for the coasties
all of this on Otis ANGB here on cape cod.

Oh ya, a Ju52 flies out of Frankfurt too.
Flies right over the house. Amazing how slow it is.

I got off a train the other day and saw that Ju52 overhead. Sounds like a washing machine.

My office is on base at NAS Patuxent River, MD. As the Navy's primary flight test base since WW2, quite a few oddball aircraft have been here at one time or another. Off the top of my head, FW-190, Zero, Mavis, P-51, etc, etc.
Currently we have F/A-18A/B/C/D/E/F's, EA-6B's, T-45's, the X-31, X-32, and X-35, P-3's, C-130's, V-22's, AH-1's, H-1's, H-60's, plus all the oddball aircraft the US Naval Test Pilot School flies. From time to time we have a civilian P-51, MiG-21 and even a Ju-52 in the pattern.
