I've just downloaded the free introductory game. I've played a similar game on Gameplay.com but was put off eventually for several reasons. Similarly with other games I've played which are online only.
Reasons which have made me give up playing online games in the past:
- Verbal abuse
- Kill Stealing
- Runwaying
Are such things a problem within the game or at an acceptable level? What's the general atmosphere like between gameplayers? Is there a game always available with enough competitors?
I'm asking not just for myself, but on behalf of several others who may be willing to subscribe to the game.
All replies recieve a free Biggles Scarf and a free Smug Smile.
-
What the hell is runwaying? And I am sure you won't find the other 2 things you mentioned in this flight sim.
-
Why not just select "online" and have a look? 14 days are free.
The introductory game is the full game. You'll get some additional maps when you log in the the areans, most of them are also available for manual download.
Verbal abuse is there somtimes. But you're only a target if you either do something bad like head-on attacks or vulches, or if you're simply better than your opponent. Flying in an evil gamey way is your own choice, don't worry about beeing so good that you get insulted for it in at least the first few years here.
True kill stealing does not happen too often. If multiple friendlies are fighting a single con only one of them is going to get the kill. It's wasted resources to do so, so they're all doing something wrong. True kill stealing where someone actually dives after a con that is going down in flames rarely happens.
No idea what you mean with runwaying. Probably some form of vulching. Yes, it regularly happens that a panzer sits next to the runway waiting for planes trying to take off. But you can see him from tower, so if there is one, just take off somewhere else. It's your contries' and therefore your own fault that you let him get there in the first place.
There are always enough players online in the main arean to find an opponent. At some timezones it might get a bit boring on the large maps, no idea how many are online then, but during Euro-evening you'll find about 300, US-evening 500 - rough estimates. Don't worry, there will be enough to shoot you down :p
You're doing in in the wrong order. First fly, then whine about it. Not the other way round ;)
-
the gameplay here is great... even though it has a big learning curve.... The training chat thread will get your questions ansered along with a faily quick response ... none of that 2-5 days waiting stuff here. along with training links and films.
theres around 500+ players in the main arena US primetime
50+ in the ct arena.
special senario's played every week .
If your into WW2 flight sims this is the place to be ...
Were currentally awaiting AH2 to be released ... updated graphics engine , along with some new arena's to play in .
Verbal abuse = not to bad as compared to other games, swearwords are blocked in chat , but you will see the feable attempts every now and then ... .squelch players name in the text bar takes care of that ..
Kill Stealing = it happens ... but theres enough players that you get plenty of kills.
Runwaying= I think you mean "vulching" shooting players as they take off .... yes this happens but only to the enemy ...and its part of war .... move to a different air field when this happens to you.
Welcome to AH and enjoy ....

Verbal abuse
Yep, you'll find this here (and anywhere), but it's not out of control. There are monitors in the game, as well as a built-in automatic profanity filter. Type in a filthy word once, you get a warning...twice, you get muted for 10 min. If someone starts acting like an angry child while there's a monitor around, they'll generally get a warning...if they continue they'll get muted or if they've totally lost control of themselves they can get booted.
Kill Stealing
You'll also find this here sometimes, though I have only had it happen to me once or twice. Here's the trick...make it explode and no one can steal it. If you don't, just be happy with the fact that you killed it, whether you get the kill credit or not.
Runwaying
If by this you mean vulching, it definitely happens and it is a beautiful thing. By vulching, I mean killing a plane that is either on the ground or landing/taking off. If you don't like being vulched, no problem...you are in complete control. Don't take off from a base with enemies circling overhead and you won't get vulched.
Definitely give it a try for yourself, the two week trial is great and doesn't even require a CC#. If you get confused, ask for help or go to the training arena and try to find a trainer. No matter how good you are (or think you are ;)), a trainer can be a lot of help. Good luck!

The main reason to subscribe: it's really, really fun. Aces High 2 is in development, so you'll get a chance to get in on the ground floor there. You'll learn a lot about WWII airplanes, weapons, and tactics, and about flying in general. You get two weeks of free trial, so go for it and judge for yourself.
Verbal abuse: It happens, as will happen anywhere with large groups of people. However, generally the AH community is a bit older than the everquest/quake crowd, and as a result, more mature. You can easily squelch anyone you deem offensive. Moderators boot or squelch people that are way over the line. And if you see anything really bad, you can take a screenshot and email it to HTC. They personally take care of some stuff. I've never gotten into a real argument in AH. Generally, if you don't go looking to argue, you won't find arguments.
Kill stealing: Happens, but not enough to make me care. There are probably 10 kill-steal whines for every actual case. Most of the time, it's just that someone else was shooting at the same target and did more damage. Nothing underhanded at all.
Runwaying: if you mean vulching (shooting planes taking off), yes it happens. Perfectly legit tactic. Main way for Allies to kill Me262s in WWII was to get them taking off and landing. You want to fly to the fights here, not take off in the middle of them. Basically, if a field is vulched, don't take off there.
The people are generally very nice and helpful. Ask for help, and someone will almost always offer you a hand. The bulletin boards are a great source of info... you can search for others who have asked your question, or ask it and recieve multiple answers, from multiple viewpoints. Players make great websites dealing with training: netaces.org is my favorite. Go there for tips on getting started.
There are almost always at least 200 players in the Main Arena (at least whenever I look). At primetime (USA nights), you'll see 400 to 500 on.
Hope this helps. Any more questions, just ask. :)

If you downloaded the game just start an account! no credit card needed and try it for 2 weeks... only way to find out.
There is ALWAYS a game available... The arenas, Main, Training, Combat Theater, Duelling Arena are all open 24/7. The Main arena at US primetime may see 500 or more players. Even at 4 am EST, there are 150+ players online in the same arena.

If you need to be talked into flying AH after the trial, then you shouldn't. Should be able to make your own decisions if you are serious.
-
lets turn this round a bit:
I probably 500 get more , good kill etc for every bad word, but community is quite tight and alot of what you see or hear is between friends.
had a noob maybe once or twice steal a kill, only guys who to it regular are my squaddies, (see above point)
camping in gv's yes, vulching yes as its part of the game when bases need to be supressed for capture,
run-awaying: yes anyone in a P-51 ;)
-
First, talk me into talking you into subscribing...

Well it might have been WWII airplanes but that's where the similarity ends. You'll have more pilots, better pilots and a harder FM to deal with. Learning curve is steep. You won't have a down in two weeks.
Every game has it's tards. Pretty mellow here from what I've heard of other places. I try to be a tard on occasion just to see if I still "got it".
Main thing is the trial is free. Feel free to jump online and become fodder for a couple of weeks and evaluate the tard factor yourself.
First lesson, if you put image tags on your picture address everyone will see it.
Now, you and your buddies grab planes and head out into the virtual skys and eliminate some of those darn tards..
Remember to stay together, and if you announce your location on channel one, and tell everyone your new, we'll leave you alone..
Now wheres my scarf ??

If you mean "Runwaying" as running away yeah some dweebs do that sometimes. As for the community, it is very tight knit, and while there still are jerks and idiots that swear a lot most of the people that play this game are very polite.
-
Why would I want to talk you into subbing?
1: You'd probably just endlessly complain.
2: I really hate your BBS name ... chances are, if you picked something else for a callsign, it'd be just as annoying.
3: There's bound to be someone else for me to talk into subscribing. Maybe someone who stands a better chance of liking the game as is and getting addicted to it .... like the rest of the assimilated AH masses. Hopefully someone with connections that will give me that one break I need to make it in Hollywood as a screenwriter or maybe a gaffer.
-
Arlo that wasn't very nice.
Shhhhh....after the first couple of days will start killing him in his chute. Let him do his two weeks, we'll kill him over and over to the point that he gets REAL frustrated and then his posts will get downright enjoyable
MindYerBeak ( that kinda rolls of the tongue ) don't bother with Arlo. He's a good guy deep down inside. Anyone that wants to be gaffer is ok in my book.
-
If ya don`t subscribe, Guido and the boys will be around to pay you a visit about midnight. Now get in there and start playing.

Piss off. You sound like a right pain in the arse, and one who wants the game to be neatly paved in front of him. Why should we persuade you to subscribe? What's in it for us? What's in it for HTC, other than a possible $14.95/month (which you might whine about) plus further BBS whining?
You want to play? Subscribe already. Just don't make us wipe your arse while you're doing it.

If you are that worried about these things, don't waste your time playing AH. This stuff happens all the time. Many here probably won't admit that it happens, but it does.
As has been pointed out by others, try it out. If you like it, stay. If you don't, no harm done.
Most people aren't *******s here. Unfortunately, like just about every other segment of society at large, the *******s are the more vocal ones.
I have found, like most people playing AH, the above issues are easy to ignore. Sometimes it gets frustrating, but all you have to do is squelch the tards and up from a different field.
Hope you make the decision to check it out and end up liking it. If not, at least you gave it a look.

I've dealt with this type before. They are the sort who come into a shop, whine about everything, expect you to grovel to them in an attempt to sell something, and then leave the shop empty-handed. Not worth the trouble, IYAM.
I say again - piss off.
-
Beet that's downright outta character for you.
I like it !!
:D
( The above is one of those smiley face things that I detest, but I figured, Beet's outta character so I'll do my part )

at last i now see why theres only 300-400 active players here now... because a select few of the current people are stunninghunks and label people before they even know them.....telling people not to subscribe etc is just bad...
-
beetle you know its not a good thing to scare away potential customers
verbal abuse:some but anything real bad and you can get am banned
killstealing:some...
runwaying:fact of life...deal with it
from what ive seen of the other flight sim communitys this one is the mildest...anyone being an ******* is essentially froshing you...ignore em and in a month you wont be bothered much
-
Ive been playing AH for almost 2 years now and I have never had a problem with verbal abuse. Yes, ive seen it happen over ch. 1 many times but i guess most of the time its just people who are looking for trouble. I play by the rules and so far it has worked well for me.
Another thing that amazes me about AH is that it is the only game i have played that hasnt bored me. I always find variety in the gameplay, and after almost 2 years, I still learn something new every week.
Thats just my personal experience.
-
Oh boy this is a good laugh...people driving away the new guy.
Seriously though, go play any other online game like (other than a flight sim) and everyone is kinda...here is an example of stuff i hear in other games:
Person kills me:
y0 do0d i ownzzzz u!!!! I am so 1337! you suck you no0b! hahahahaha nooooooooooooobbbbbbbbbbbbbbb bbbbb!!!!! i am so ko0l so d0nt even try messing with the 1337 d0od!!!!!
I kill him-
how did that no0b kill me?!?!?!?!? I amz going to killl him!!!!!!!! How could someone kill me!?!?!??!?!!?!?!?! I am so 1337!!!!!!
Now just add a bunch of swears and really bad stuff I do not want to post here an you have an idea of some other games...
My point is this game is pretty mild, there are jerks here an there, but its fine.

Overlag you really need to go HERE (http://www.theblueknights.com/rolleyes.html)
You can overcome it with this group..

You mean 3,000 to 4,000 active i think ;)

smacks of "Flying Duck Sitting Swan" to me - and will probably yield as much revenue to HTC.

Yeah, funny how that FDSS guy used to put "erm" in his posts, like "erm, no".
Know anyone else that does that?

how much longer until aceshighII comes out?
will I be able to download it and play it offline before subscribing?

Beetle.Im gonna kick you square in the nuts if you dont
1) Go out and abuse someone.
2) Go steal a few kills and,
3) Do something on the runway.
That and stop sounding like a tardlett ya bastage you.

I apologize for all of the ill will expressed in some of the posts above. Some people that play Aces High are just bitter. Please understand they are the minority and don't really represent the rest of us.
To adress your immediate concerns:[/b]The verbal abuse is minimal and usually restricted to the few bad apples you'll find anywhere. People like myself and my squad take time out of our schedule to reprimand the individuals displaying that type of behavior and have really curtailed it.[/b]This is very difficult to do and is also despised by myself and my squad. I've only actually seen it happen to me once and I didn't even have to say anything because everyone else around me explained the pheux pas to the individual who promptly apologized and we all hugged.[/b]I assume you are reffering to something called "vulching". That is if you're talking about the act of shooting aircraft on the runway before they have a chance to launch. Once again, this seldomely happens. People just don't like to fight with that kind of unfair advantage. Most of us will just ask politely for the enemy to let us know when he (or she) is ready for us to engage.
I hope I've been of some help here and I encourage you to give the game a two week trial (absolutely free).
Enjoy the AH experience!

I wholeheartedly concur with my collueague's summation. Welcome to AH dear sir and have a cheery day. :D
-
1. Are you over 14?
2. Do you have a hi pitched voice that hurts others when you talk on vox?
3. Do you have a joystick?
:D
-
My experience of horses who need to be dragged to to water is that they don't drink once you get them there. "Give me a reason to subscribe". Well, there's a 2-week free trial. If someone flies that, and then still comes to the BBS looking for reasons to subscribe, they don't sound like long term HTC customer prospects to me.
And in case no-one realised, Mini D was taking the piss. ^^

AH2 is due soon, presumably before the end of the month.
You never have to subscribe to play offline and there is always free 8 player Head-to-Head.
-
Its not worth it unless you like to travel in packs and fly Spitfires, or go on fighter/bomber raids to pork airbases and auger after you've dropped all your bombs and shot your rockets.
Save your money and buy a good racing sim instead.

Don't listen to Beetle. He's from Britton, near Yurrop.

Sorry. Can't help you with your "...subscribe?" dilemna. Some decisions, such as whether to play an online game or not, are just too plain simple and easy to make on ones own without having to ask anyone for help.
However if I'm wrong and you really are the type who needs this help then assuredly your best bet is to ask that person who puts your Garanimal matching shirt and pant set out each morning ;)

Kill Stealing......
You Cant "steal" a kill...either you killed it or someone else did:). I'm always amazed at guys chasing a burning wreck down to the deck to "steal" it. Think I've "lost" 2 or 3 in 3+yrs. However two things to vcome into play:
1) 1st is the "spitty going down" "kill caller" who constantly announces his kills on vox...of course 90% of the time you'll find the above mentioned spitty climbing up your 6 after you broke off the "dead" plane....and your a "kill stealer" after you wack the pesky bugger.
2) the "kill you stealer"who zooms down into the front of the conga line and takes out you (and three other "good guys") with killshooter milliseconds before colliding with his target who scoots merrily away with 4 extra pelts:):)
BTW...I agree with beetle...just sign up or go away...you sound like to much of a whinner to me.

No I wouldn't recommend that. Sax speaks in tongues and has bad "mojo"
Not something for the new and uninitiated. It's dark and requires the giving of something that can't be takin back..
Blood screams in the cold dark and damp..
It's..
Well personally, I'd pass.

Many thanks to all those with helpful replies. I realise now that this game is entirely different to Air Attack. In that game you had to land on the runway for repair and whilst waiting some players would "runway" you, blasting you to bits whilst motionless on the runway. Heavy frowns all around and gloats from the Runwayers.
This looks to be my type of game, and I found it by accident whilst browsing at another forum. I've heard of Aces High before, but didn't realise it was an internet only game to which you could subscribe. I've downloaded the game, but haven't played yet since I prefer to read up on the forums first and get to know others. That way I'm better prepared for what goes on ingame. It's not so much me that needs convincing as me mates, tight gits at the best of times, and I was hoping they can be convinced to sign up.
Now I have some spare time I'll take a read around the forums and familiarise meself with gameplay.
A free Biggles scarf to all the well wishers:

Aye, 'tis me, Mr. Overlag, sir. Nice to see you, to see you nice. Thanks for the support. I'm no longer a Don at OcUK, having resigned. I no longer visit or post there.
I'm now a Mod at Digi-Darkroom.com, a Home for Wayward Dons. Most of us are there: Rebel, Saracen, 2Blue4U, Gordy, Bod, Stumpy and Mr. Fixxxer. Since I have spare time on my hands now I decided to get back into the gameying scene and have some fun for a pleasant change. I tend to think this is the kind of game I'd want to subscribe to.

I flew Air attack ,,,,Alias Fighter ace 1 / 1.5 way back when .... and FA2 .... it was always a cut your throat type of sim ....and the players tried to get away with lots of stuff ...along with the cheats ect.
Ace's High is alot better .... stronger community , better support ,and a better flight model , more realistic on how the plane flys .... you take air attack /FA1 and put it on full realism ... add wind , stalls ,ect and you'll start to get close to the FM of AH .
AH has a better plane set then AA /FA1 plus ships and ground vehicles, and manned ack, and gunner in bombers, and the join a players plane .... the list goes on .... once you get past the learning stage you'll become a AH junkie like the rest of us...

Is there really any need of such gutter language and sarcasm? Not that I need to give you an explanation, but I'll give you one anyway. It's not myself I'm asking for, more to persuade my friends to join who have reservations on forking out almost £10 per month for a game. I also posted here in order to acquaint myself with the online community. Your insults and comments were uncalled for, insolent and bad mannered. It's not big and it's not clever. Trying to make yourself look the tough guy in front of your peers only serves to make you look a prat, not me, and is a sign of having a very small Willy when you hide behind a screen.
I have too much respect for myself and other members of this community to resort to name calling, so I'll refrain from returning any insults or sarcasm. In the meantime treat yourself to a Severe Frown:

Ah, here we have rearm pads, and if a field is capped with enemy fighters, motionless aircraft sitting on the rearm pads are easy targets.... so yes, I would say it does happen. :)downloaded the game, but haven't played yet since I prefer to read up on the forums first and get to know others. Best way - may I also suggest you download and read the Help file (http://www.hitechcreations.com/download.html#help) before venturing online? While most players are only too pleased to help a newbie, it does get irritating for some when the answers to some basic questions ("How do I start my engine?") can be found in the Help files. Also check out
Netaces.org (http://www.netaces.org) for some very helpful information on all aspects of the game. :)
Maybe once you get established in the game, you may also wish to check out some of our Special Events - see the Calendar (http://www.hitechcreations.com/forums/calendar.php?s=) for details of what is coming up, and look out for my weekly Special Events Announcements. :D
Welcome to Aces High. ;)

LOL! Don't have a cow, man. Sorry if I tarred you with the same brush as a salamander that was floating around these boards at the time I subscribed. His name was Flying Duck Sitting Swan, and he went to great lengths to say why he would not subscribe to the game at the end of the free trial. (FDSS post) (http://www.hitechcreations.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8661) And I always wondered what the point was of telling everyone. People like that remind me of those nutters that hang around Hyde Park Corner, spouting crap about the second coming. (I can only manage it once, and then have to have a rest for two hours - must be my age). As for gutter language, I don't think "piss" is too bad a word. It's not stamped on by the language filter, and I even saw skuzzy himself referring to a "pissing contest" - lol.
These "shall I subscribe" posts are on a par with quit posts. The stock answer to those is "don't let the door hit you in the arse on the way out" - lol. At the end of the day, YOU have to work out if this game is worth your $14.95 subscription. No one else can do that for you, any more than we can eat, sleep and crap on your behalf. Subscribe now! If you don't like the game you can always cancel. The cost in UK money is less than £10/month. I really can't see the point of threads which debate the wisdom or folly of such a piffling expense.
You don't know anything about my Willy. I'll have you know I'm very clean, and use a special soap which also claims to beautify your BBS posts.
