A friendly field is being vulched. The huge red DARBAR of doom casts its evil shadow over the sector.
Green dots appear and disappear in my screen, all in vain. Before my mind's eye my countrymen are falling in flames.
Up my trusted P-51B to go to the rescue, knowing full well that it will be futile.
Climb up high because I expect the vulchers to come in ridiculously high too, despite their numerical advantage.
When I arrive at the field I see a handful of Spits low as well as another P-51.
I try a few B & Z's but they evade and with an eye on the sky above I dare not blow my E for one kill.
Sure enough, the high bogies arrive, so I hit WEP, extend a bit and start climbing.
109's and 190's far behind me.
Regain E.
A lone 109 seems intent on following me, we're about co-alt >18.000 feet.
We merge, he passes under me. I loop without pulling too much G.
He is in front of me now and does a split S, I roll inverted and follow.
He pulls up and loops very tightly.
I follow and start to black out.
Just before everything goes black I see myself gaining in the loop and that he is close at 350.
He will cross my nose in half a second.
Everythink goes black and I pull the trigger for a very short burst.
I see hit sprites on a completely black screen.
I ease pressure on my stick and the world returns again.
I look up and see a Bf-109.
I observe him bursting into flames and losing a wing.
A kill is awarded.
My heart is full of joy.
Behind me the hordes overrun and capture the field.
One 109 will not return.
I return to base and land safely with nearly all my ammo.
Contemplate that in real life my guns wouldn't have fired under high G.
Smile for the perfect kill.

Why?
-
p51b guns had a habit of jamming when fired under G.
-
Ahh, thanks.
-
thrila is right, that's why the gun installation on the D model was changed.
Nevertheless I doubt it if 0.50 guns would fire under 6G or more. Does anybody know the practical limits for this?
-
I know the Browning M2HB from my time in the army, and I can't think of any reason why it shouldn't work under high G. Feeding the gun might be a problem, but not the gun itself.
-
Actually the perfect kill, is the break turning spitdweeb at d500. A short burst of 30mm from my 109, the endless waiting as the taters take a full second to travel 500 meters. The delay then POW! one hits just in front of his cockpit. Split second after that "Boom, ein spit weniger!" And the warm n' fuzzy feeling knowing the last thing to go through that spitdweebs mind, was his gunsight.
-
There is no reason a .50 would not fire at 6+ G. As far as the firing pin striking the primer but I doubt it would feed more than 2 or 3 rounds as the belts would be jammed hard against the feed tray.
Crewed on a .50 for awhile in the military also. Very dependable weapons as long as they are clean and timed correctly.
Woohoo first post:)

The jamming or no fire of the guns on the P-51B was a real problem in WWII. It was due to how they were mounted in the wing. As they've already stated this problem was fixed with the D model. In the book "Into the Teeth of the Tiger" they explain this whole problem. It was written by a WWII survivor who flew for the Flying Tigers in China.

I thought they only had the problem under neg g's?

Actually the perfect kill is saddling up on a 109 in a Spit and watching the stick-stirrin, porpose undulations, and timing the perfect lead shot into these physically impossible moves and wathcing the whole empanage separate from the plane and then watching the the 109 spraying lead everywhere hoping to get the lucky shot. ;)

Hitting at 500 with 30mm... that's a good trick... will take little ole me about 10 more years of practise (I had one so far).
Maybe I'll write a new story then.
-
Ice let me check the book again...I believe the negative G issue was with fuel not guns and it was on a different airframe. I could very well have it backwards though. I know it had problems with the gun failing to fire and I coulda swore it was due to heavy positive G's.
-
Think about it guys, how many times do you fire your guns when under negative G's in AH?

I do quite often. That guy that does the quick split s and you dont want to follow just push over a bit get a quick shot on hit elevators. I get lots of kills that way.

Best kill ever:
I take my trusty bravo pony out to stretch its legs. As I take off I notice a single delta, all shiny and gleaming, coming into the base. We play cat and mouse for a while, each trying to lure the other into a fatal mistake. Finally, I have gained enough altitude to take the fight to him. We go at it for nearly 7 minutes. We're on the deck, riding the stall horn. We're scissoring, we're breaking, we're doing everything possible to win position. At last I manage to get in a snapshot. His wingtip comes off and he loops into the ocean.
Best kill I've ever had. to warpy for that fight.

It was also fixed in later B/C models that got retrofitted with the ammo belt feed introduced in the D model.

I remember flying along at 18,000ft in my wooden crate when I spotted such a pretty sight about 6,000ft below me. Two Bf110G-2s in such perfect and tight formation, the wingman behind and to the left of the leader. Maybe 100ft between them.
I roll over, hit WEP and dive.
The Mossie is creaking and groaning from overspeed as I pull in behind them.
I'm coming up on them so fast.
Come on, don't look behind you.
Almost there....
Fire a burst from the cannons at the wingman. Ah, there he goes, instant trip to the tower in the sky.
Tak a quarter second to line up on the leader.
Fire a burst, pause for a split second, fire again. He's on his way to the sky tower now.
They never even twitched.
Zoom back up.
Our bombers in this sector are a little safer now.
(Actually that isn't perfect as I enjoy a good fight. However they were so pretty in their nice little formation, and a Mossie killing Bf110s is just so right)

This is a game right? Did you kill a real person or no?

I've read of at least 1 account where a P-51D pilot made a kill while under 7G's.
Source: "Mustang"- a book I read several years ago.
-
In my Dora, most of my spit kills are at 1 g (they dont see me) or firing while blockout (spits turn hard but 190 instant. turns make the job). I am use to fire with a black screen at 150 range.

I don't fly the D-9 much, guess it can be flown a bit like I fly P-51's but it's (much) harder to aim the guns.
Don't you collide often when you try to shoot Spits that close in black-out turns?
