I can remember when we used to be able to buy bongs at the gawdamn mall... now, it's worth a $20K fine to sell them.

and I remember when a nickel bag cost five bucks.  Regardless, even here in Texas, the great state that disallows bongs and dildos, you can still buy them almost anywhere.  Just do not walk in and say, "give me a bong", or "where are the dildos located".  You must say:  Where are the Tobacco accessories and the Sex education demonstrators".

Christ, couldn't the money spent prosecuting this crap be better spent elsewhere?

John Ashcroft needs go to.  This is just a stupid waste of our tax dollars.  I'd really like to see the bill for convicting this truly dangerous purveyor of pipes.

This is just insane. We are slowly, but surely headed towards a society reminiscent of Stalin or Hitler. The secret police will be knocking at your door soon.

Why does enforcing the law, albeit rather in a style more suited to a Hollywood movie, make people cry "secret police" and "Hitler"?  Our laws are not "secrets" nor are they enforced without due process.  If "we" as a society don't like them, we can get them changed . . . I guess the ones wanting it changed are to stoned to remember when election day is . . .

So, you honestly think that investigating and prosecuting this case cost us $20,000 or less?

Yep, it's BS.

Yep, the money could have been better spent elsewhere.

Yep, it costs more than $20,000 to investigate, prosecute, and house a person for 9 months.

Yep, Ashcroft needs to go.

When was the last time a candidate came out in favor of repealing some of these "Morality" statutes? I have voted in ALMOST every election since I was 18 and I don't remember any legalization issue on the ballot. Tommy Chong was as dangerous to the United States as a grain of salt. Too bad I am not allowed to vote on Ashcroft.

and as we've been finding here with the "deathwith dignity act", and the medical marijuana law, even if you get the laws changed ashcroft and co. will still try to override what the people want.

atempts have been made to pull the ability to write perscriptions for for DR's who participate in either.  so far without sucsess but they aren't giving up.

aparently another trick they are using to get around the Oregon law is that while people who are legal licensed to grow marijuana (either those with perscription, or licensed providers  each allowed to posses 3 mature plants and 4 imiture plants) they have to allow police to inspect at any time (much like the atf does if you have a licensed personal use still).  last winter what some counties where doing (salem area as I recall, I know a couple licensed growers) was allowing federal drug officers to come with for inspections (sort of a 'ride along' thing), they'd do the inspection and leave and then the fed would use what he saw as grounds for a warant on a federal charge.  (disclaimer-however, I have not seen this in the news, like I said I know a couple licensed growers who are members of groups, aparently this has happened to some of the people in these groups, and I've heard the same story from more than 1 source)

so even if you vote out stupid laws doesn't mean they wont still try and find someway to still enforce them.

Maybe so.  But the law he is enforcing has been around much longer than he has been AG.  Change the law.

All you stoners need to realise that the law is the law, and no matter how much you think it sucks, the only way it is going to change is if you vote to change it.

I highly doubt that will ever happen as ya'll are usually on some pot headed food binge at WHite Castle on election day anyways...

I got a huka for my ex-roommate for Christmas 2001.  LOL we named it Osama Bong Laden,  since it was a 2 piped huka :D

Look at the dates :)  and the doctor was fired for almost killing me twice.  Ok I helped him the 2nd time, but he didn't give me all the info I needed not to get hooked and to NOT STOP TAKING THE MOST ADDICTIVE SUBSTANCE IN THE WORLD BECAUSE IT CAN KILL YOU IF YOU STOP.

but yeah I've smoked some, not like the past though.  Can't go back to those days.  Moderation....

Oh,  no doubt Eagler.  I'm fully aware of that.  I learned a lot from my experience last year.  The best thing was how to deal with depression when I get it.  I haven't gotten depressed since december of last year, that was the end of a 5 year bout of it too!   I'm always on the look out for warning signs of addictive behavior in myself.  If I see one,  I make a change.   It works,  it really does :D

I haven't done any drugs since 1990, but I have been tempted.

Played golf with one of the corporate guys a couple weeks ago. We were having a great time, when he (he's 55) pulls out this pipe. He fired it up on the course and offered me some. I declined, but I was sorely tempted to see if it was still fun.

I used to smoke every day udie. Now I haven't seen a joint in 8 or so years. I don't know even anybody who smokes nowadays. or if they do I don't know it. I've actually gotten to the point where I think it's retarded to get "fugged up". Slowing up your brain for enjoyment, it seems like a completely stupid idea to me now. I'd rather be sharp at all times. But then again, I'm a much better person than all these stoners in this thread. Who knows, someday you might be like me udie. :)

Well I certainly don't smoke like I used to.  Just a weekend thing now if I'm around and somebody sparks up.  I've heard your accent anyway,  noway I could ever compete with that! :D

Never touched weed in my life.  The most illegal substance that ever went into my body was alcohol (when I was underage).  And I still think the whole Chong thing is stupid, along with the laws that got him there.

I don't approve of marijuana at all, but I don't think it's worth my tax dollars to prosecute him and then house him for 9 months.

These are federal charges. The states are lining up with changes to drug laws, but the AG continues to stand firm and make arrests for federal crimes regardless of what the voters decide.

"Change the law" seems to be a gross oversimplification.

It's right up there with "elect the president."

They are federal charges because he was selling the stuff over the internet to people in other states.  If he'd stayed local they probably would have left him alone.

Those federal laws the AG is enforcing were written by the elected representatives of the voters, not by the AG.    Just because you don't agree with a law doesn't mean the law was passed without due democratic representation.

Change the law.  Don't tell the AG to ignore it, it's his job to enforce it.

He decides where and when to devote the resources to uphold the law. No way in heck he can catch everyone. So saying it's his job is a cop out too.

BTW Udie... pot is bad... just numbs your brain and makes you less than you should be. I should know, I will compare my drug background against anyone on theis board for shear stupidity.

He definitely can't catch everyone.  So when a celebrity violates the law in a very public way, the AG nails him for it and all the lesser violators get the message.  He did his job, change the law.

Yeah, a few months ago(maybe a year or so), Chong was on a local station shilling his bongs, er, art pieces.  Hate to see it happen to him, cause I really do like him and have been known to burn myself, but he left himself wide open for it, and the law is both plain and very easy to circumvent.

You think that's silly, Ashcroft is now going after the porn industry.  A postal inspector seized a video from a company named "Extreme Associates" shipped to a wholesaler in western PA.  The owner was indicted on the vague federal obscenity law that requires the jurors in this conservative PA region to apply their idea of what an average person's "community standards" are with regards to prurient interest.  It is truly sad that Ashcroft has chosen to use the resources of the Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section to go after consenting adults rather than the real criminals like child pornographers, and indicative of exactly how warped his priorities for law enforcement are.

Pah!  Piker.  I drove a 1967 chevy pickup, with 6 drunken/tripping guys at speeds over 100MPH for almost 20 miles, with the right rear tire blown out.  It was a rough ride until the rubber came off the rim, then the 30' rooster tail of sparks was COOL!  We were passing cars on the shoulder, and just hauling ass, Good Lord it is amazing that we are still alive.

This is no lie, either, I still can't believe we made it home, alive and with no cops chasing us.  The next day, we followed the marks that the rim had left in the road(there was just a red hot skin of metal around the brake drum when we made it back to the house), that is how I know how far it was.

At one point, we were driving along the levee (we still had 4 tires) and some Cajun kids were flying thier kite.  Someone in the back grabbed the string and we drug it for a couple of miles with about 4 truckloads of warthoges chasing us before the string caught a powerline and we outran the mob.

This is the most stupid, but overall pretty typical of my college years, the first 5, anyway.
