A few months ago, one of the news shows had a segment on contract riders for backstage accomodations of musicians. Stuff like VanHalen's dressing room had to be stocked with M&Ms --with the brown ones removed; and the Rolling Stones demanded a snooker table (not a pool table). Many of these go on for pages.

For Johnny Cash’s dressing room?

Running water, chair, toilet, paper towels and a mirror.

I was a Johnny Cash fan when I was a kid and really enjoyed seeing his recent comeback. Didn't June Cash die just a month or so ago?

Johnny was a legend among legends.  His music was so original.  Can't say enough about my respect and admiration for his songs.  Another one gone.   Johnny.

Funny how I'm not a big fan of country music, but always liked Johnny Cash. I guess he was just one of those few people who you couldn't help but like. One of the last of a dying breed.

I don't want no aggravation
When my train has left the station
If you're there or not, I may not even know
Have a round and remember
Things we did that weren't so tender
Let the train blow the whistle when I go

On my old guitar sell tickets
So someone can finally pick it
And tell the girls down at the Ritz
I said hello
Tell the gossipers and liars
I will see them in the fire
Let the train blow the whistle when I go
Let her blow, let her blow

Long and loud and hard and happy
Let her blow
No regrets, all my debts will be paid
When I get laid
Let her blow, let her blow, let her blow

You'll be left without excuses
For the evils and abuses
Down to today from years and years ago
And have yourself another toke
From my basket full of smoke
And let the train blow the whistle when I go

Let her blow, let her blow
Long and loud and hard and happy
Let her blow
No regrets, all my debts will be paid
When I get laid
Let her blow, let her blow, let her blow

Title: One of MY favorite John Cash songs
Post by: Dega on September 12, 2003, 12:27:36 PM
Posted in his honor

Ragged Old Flag
By John R. Cash, © 1974 House of Cash, Inc.
I walked through a county courthouse square,
On a park bench an old man was sitting there.
I said, "Your old courthouse is kinda run down."
He said, "Naw, it'll do for our little town."
I said, "Your old flagpole has leaned a little bit,
And that's a Ragged Old Flag you got hanging on it."

He said, "Have a seat," and I sat down.
"Is this the first time you've been to our little town?"
I said, "I think it is." He said, "I don't like to brag,
But we're kinda proud of that Ragged Old Flag.

"You see, we got a little hole in that flag there
when Washington took it across the Delaware.
And it got powder-burned the night Francis Scott Key
Sat watching it writing Say Can You See.
And it got a bad rip in New Orleans
With Packingham and Jackson tuggin' at its seems.

"And it almost fell at the Alamo
Beside the Texas flag, but she waved on though.
She got cut with a sword at Chancellorsville
And she got cut again at Shiloh Hill.
There was Robert E. Lee, Beauregard, and Bragg,
And the south wind blew hard on that Ragged Old flag.

"On Flanders Field in World War I
She got a big hole from a Bertha gun.
She turned blood red in World War II.
She hung limp and low by the time it was through.
She was in Korea and Vietnam.
She was sent where she was by her Uncle Sam.

"She waved from our ships upon the briny foam,
And now they've about quit waving her back here at home.
In her own good land here she's been abused --
She's been burned, dishonored, denied, and refused.

"And the government for which she stands
Is scandalized throughout the land.
And she's getting threadbare and wearing thin,
But she's in good shape for the shape she's in.
'Cause she's been through the fire before
And I believe she can take a whole lot more.

"So we raise her up every morning,
take her down every night.
We don't let her touch the ground
and we fold her up right.
On second thought, I do like to brag,
'Cause I'm mighty proud of that Ragged Old Flag

I did not think it would be long after June died.  I was glad for him to get one last shot of recognition by the public with his version of "Hurt" by NiN.  I dont think Ive ever seen a more powerful music video.

Rest in peace with the other Man in Black.

Johnny Cash had his roots in Rock and Roll and crossed over into Country. Did you know that He, Elvis, Carl Perkins and Roy Orbison used to travel to shows together in a station Wagon with their instruments strapped to the roof in the early Sun Records days? What a ride that must have been. I have always been a huge fan, even as a kid. I can remember watching his TV show and he would have these very UN-Country acts on like Neil Young and Stevie Wonder and he always opened the show standing in the spotlight on a blacked out stage "Hello.......I'm Johnny Cash". His faith was always strong and I have no doubt he is giving God a Command Performance right now.

"Folsom Prison blues" and "I walk the line" are favorites of mine.
