Whats with pop ups on site like CNN? the jerks can't spend the money for their own site with no popups? Lame!!!!
DIE Cnn you cheap bastards!!!
-
download google toolbar it now has a bulit in pop up blocker and it works great
-
Sure but that’s not the point sites like CNN should not be so cheap!
I expect it on Joebobs home page or Mullet.com
But CNN?
-
I use "pop-up stopper pro " from panicware myself ...they have a free version also ... works great ... and if you want /need to get a popup windo to open (such as some of the downloads/pic's in the box ext...) you just hold down the ctrl key and hit the link again ... ***** stars imo.

Bandwidth, servers and java programmers aren't free.
-
because they, as we were til first of year, are owned by that online "powerhouse" called AOL
try Netscape's home page for more of the same
and I second the google bar blocker

Ummmmm....neither are commercials.
-
The best solution for CNN and sites with popups is not to use a blocker; they can not tell and just assume you are enjoying those delightful little commercials. No, the best thing to do is to not visit those sites.

Would you rather have pop-up adds, or have to pay a subscription?
-
Neither. Foxnews.com is free!! :D :D :D

That's funny, 'cause I just went to http://www.foxnews.com and got a popup add.
-
Wow...you got a pop up...did you have to pay for it?? Just for the record Mickey, it wasn't me that griped about pop-ups. Like Pfunk said, the google bar eliminates those....

No, but when I asked if one would rather have pop-ups or pay for a subscription, you said "Neither. Foxnews.com is free!!", as if foxnews.com had no pop-ups and you didn't have to pay for it.
-
I claimed nothing. Foxnews is free. I clicked on your hyperlink 5 times with no pop-ups and I have neither the google bar or pop-up blockers on my system. So, I was telling it how I saw it. No pop-ups on my end (I am NOT a registered user at foxnews) and I don't have to pay for a subscription. Anything else?

No, I feel I have proved my point. Thanks for asking.

You insinuated that CNN paid for their online services with pop-up ads. You have proved nothing. Try again please.

Are you saying they don't? Why wouldn't revenue from online ads be used to defray the associated costs of the online service?
-
No, what I was saying is that the vast majority of CNN's income is TV commercials. Online ads do bring in revenue, that is the point of it.

I agree. My point was that since consumers of cnn.com are not paying for the service, pop-up adds are a necessary evil in order to generate revenue to defray costs associated with the service. I personnaly find it hard to whine about pop-up ads when I am using a service for free.
I believe Eagler is correct. It appears that foxnews.com sends a cookie so that you only get the pop-up once a day (or some other time interval).

Ah, see? We both went around the barn on opposite sides.
