North Beach and Chinatown for food and "atmosphere" You can see it all on foot. Take a walk up Coit Tower for a helluva view. Ride the Cable Car down to Fisherman's Wharf and walk around and look at the shops and the tourists. It goes on 24hrs a day. Union Square has high-dollar stores. The Financial District is interesting for people who haven't seen skyscrapers up close. Then there's Golden Gate Park(there are shuttles that take you to GGP)the San Francisco War Memorial & Performing Arts Center, The Golden Gate Bridge, Ghiradelli, The Embarcadero, and much, much, more.
All of SF is interesting. Driving in "The City" is challenging if you aren't familiar with it but Van Ness, California(don't call 'em "streets" or the locals will know you're a tourist), Columbus, Market, Washington, Broadway, Geary, Fulton, Sunset, and Mission will get you to, or near, most anywhere in SF.

If, you're in SF you can get a drink at the Cliff House, as you head North over the GG bridge into Marin County, and when over the bridge there is a parking lot on the right, pull in, park the car, and walk half way back across the GG bridge for a most spectacular view...pretty neat. Then get back on the highway, and drive up to the Hedlands for another spectacular view. Then, drive down into Sausalito, a neat little bay town. For lunch, I suggest you drive to Sam's Anchor Cafe, in Tiburon(The seabreezes are great, and the crab melt isn't on the menu, so you have to ask for it, all locals know about it....mmmm). Then, it's off to Sonoma, and Napa Valley. Have Great Day! There is a lot more to do around SF. Looking for more, head south down US 1, to Big Sur.

An absolute MUST! Napa is also a spot that should be high on the list. And of course the obligatory tourist trip to Fisherman's Warf.

Great suggestions all. Its been a while since I spent quality time in SF. Used to live near Pismo, (Morro Bay). Driving up, and I'll be working most of the time, but the Mrs. will surely be out spending money. Staying at Fishermans Warf in the Hyatt... woot... on the Company tab :)

MT,
For a romantic evening I highly recommend going to the top of the Marriot (http://www.marriott.com/dpp/PropertyPage.asp?MarshaCode=SFODT&EPCEC=InProcess&EPNAVCEC=InProcess) for the beautiful view of the city. It's also a nice place for a drink. Also the top of Mark Hopkins hotel is beautiful too but not near as nice as the Marriot's view.

Yep, the View is a great place to go for drinks and live music.

Don't foget to check out Guitar City down on Harrision they have an awesome stock of guitars. With so many customers in the Bay Area they almost take any deal.
-
Don't forget to visit the homeless
-
that's kinda unavoidable in SF.
-
During the Air Warrior Convention in San Francisco, Sickboy, myself, and two other squaddies took a trip downtown.
As we were driving on the freeway, I looked over at the next car. The guy driving was staring straight ahead, but then he held up a fuzzy Koala Bear hand puppet towards our SUV and started moving it around like it was walking and talking.
-
Bring the homeless a shopping cart from your hometown, they will consider it to be an "exotic" and will be the envy of all their friends, who have to push around the "domestics" given them by the city council.
Sorry to hijack, MT, I have never been to SF, and envy you for going. Have Fun!
-
Go to the Presidio.
great little museum there.
-
Oh and if you drop your wallet kick it back to your car.
you dont want to be bending over in that that city.:D

Me too. One more pic to share... California is actually a very nice place, contrary to what you might have heard.

I agree 100%. Although, as a bartender for 6 years, I could tell if a person was from Southern California within 30 seconds of conversation.
-
I love California. It's the Californians I can't stand.
