OK OK OK..
IVE HAD IT!!
Wife on PC now every night...got to get a router so she can use that brand freakin new Laptop that collects dust under my end table.
Now, what router to buy? dont want to spend alot, then again, I want something good...but I dont want it to interrupt AH game play or slow it down either....(I have a cable connection) FYI
SO, I ask you ..oh great technology people...what are my choices? I do not want to go to jail for something happening to my wife..LOL:lol
Im losing air time here people!!

I've installed a couple of Linksys routers, the wireless ones with 4-port switch. They work great. I don't know how they work with AH though.

Hmmm I had DSL with a router and it worked fine!
Had 3 computers on it.
But think you may run into an issue with Cable Company.
Where I am the Cable people require a seperate account and hookup for each computer.
IMHO having a wireless is asking for trouble! With wireless someone can set a few houses away and link into your system unless you have some very good security in place!
Look for strange marks on the curbs as you drive down the street and some of those marks are reported to be there from the people that will hack into your system.

Fave Linksys wireless router and works great on cable..... have 4 computers on it.... no security issues..... even used search program WiNc and couldn't find it..... just change ssid..... was $200 I think......

I have Linksys WRT54G wireless with 4 wired ports for $129 at Comp USA and $79 for laptop receiver. AH no problem on desktop and wired port. Laptop works thru 4 walls 100' away in pool cabana at 1750 dl speed. Wired speed is 2050. You can get the slower 11.b for bout $130 for both components.

Radio waves? Most Wireless routers/stuff use radio waves?????
For some systems Radio Waves can also mean micro waves.
Cell phones conversations are being heard and recorded all the time. The guy that got sued by Cruise and Kidman for recording and selling their cell phone conversation to the media?
You won't find it with Winc.
It can be found with the right type of radio wave SCANNER!
Once they find the frequency and know how to hook in using their own radio transceiver :(
So some sort of security system needs to be in place.

Mine came with WAP, SSID, and addressable MAC address. Also the range is not that good. It loses signal outside the concrete wall around my yard. Nothing is 100% secure but someone would have to be really good AND be hangin out in my yard hackin while he dodgin bullets.

Your signal strength doesn't matter as much as you might think.
The sensitivity and ability of the hackers equipment is the thing.
But sounds like your system has the checks in place provided you use em, and change passwords right away, you should be OK.

You are right, I am amazed that most people don't use the security features in their wireless setup. I read an article bout someone who drove through town with a scanning program running. He says only 20% were encrypted and those that weren't, had all the default passwords, SSID, etc. I changed SSID and the password, set it only to communicate only with 11.G devices, set up WAP encryption, turned off SSID broadcast, set it to communicate only between the specific MAC address of my laptop and the router MAC address, and run Sygate software firewall on both machines even while playing AH.
If there is some super-hacker living in my quiet little beach town whom can make it through all that, then I guess my puter is his.
I strongly suggest anyone with a wireless setup use all the security tools available. Most routers now have WAP available through a firmware update which is more secure than WEP. My AH machine is hardwired to the router, so I can't say if the encryption causes any problems with AH.

And don't forget that perhaps the best thing you can do is be careful with the placement wireless base station. Ideally, it should be in the CENTER of the area you want wireless connectivity, which MIGHT NOT be where your cablemodem/DSL connection is in the house.
For example, if you put your base station in a room at the front of your house, then the signal is almost certainly going to be readable from the street. On the other hand, if you put it in a back room, then a driver on the street may not see it at all. BOTH locations will probably be just fine for use in and around the house.
Then there's the simple expedient of turning off the radio portion of an all-in-one wireless base station/DSL router when you aren't using the notebook, or in some cases, lowering the antennas to dramatically reduce the broadcast range. I myself prefer a seperate wireless base station AND router, so I can more easliy position the base station in the center of the house, AND I can unplug it when I just won't be using the wireless stuff for a few days/weeks.
Obviously, you reall should enable all the other stuff mentioned here, such as 128 bit wep, MAC address filtering, and changing the SSID and such.
When it comes to router brands, I like the Linksys products. Regardng compatibility, both the Warbirds Con and ther AH con used a off-the-shelf, consumer-grade linksys DSL router to spread around the connection to everyone on the Con floor for the past two years. They work just fine.

i have the linksys 4 port cable modem router. Run 3 systems on it and have never had a problem with it. No effect on playing ah, delays fine, no hassles at all, not even when wife and I are both using the net at the same time.

Use the Linksys 4port cable router here. No problems at all - even play AH simultaneously on two PCs through it.

you can get a dlink 604 for about 60-80 bucks...mine works well so far...but it is NOT wireless...

There is a "new" 3com a/b/g wifi router out with 4 10/100 ports to. Its getting great rewievs. I use the older model myself with just 802.11b but its great and easy to set up and maintain. Good range
You can even get it very cheap with an 802.11G wifi pcmcia card.
