I quit!
Not!
Why is it that in the American made movies people never say good bye in the end of an telephone conversation?
Every Hollywood movie i see people djust "click" the phones at the end... No cya, good bye etc..
Is this the norm for telephone conversations over there? :)
-
I have allways wanted to ask the same question! :D
-
Yeah....good question maniac

ROFL!!!
I watched Bullitt last night (1968, Steve McQueen). The opening scenes show a bad guy escaping from a parking garage, chased by some mafia hitmen. His brother (Vic Tayback) lets him go. And then comes the phone call to the Mafia boss...
"This is Pete. We lost him".
"He's your brother, Ross, and if you can't find him, we have people who will. And you're paying for the contract" - click

American made movies have a great lack of accuracy!!!!
Its also hard to find a western movie where you see someone reloading his colt. :) That disappointed me since i was about 12 yrs old.
John Wayne was a cheater!! Damn movies ....
And why do Rambo or Arnold never need to pee???? Hard to identify with that kind of heroes.
:D
-
If you want accurracy and realism you should watch a James Bond movie.
-
Dont turn this into a flame war! It was an honest question :)
But i take from the answers here that you indeed do say good bye in the end of the conversation...

Not many where you'll see them taking a crap either, but it's assumed that they probably do. ;)
And most people I talk to on the phone are smart enough to know when the conversation is over. :D

Because the other guy already knows you've said your lines.
That's the same reason you never see two actors speaking over each other in a movie, either.
-
Actually I know a couple people who dont always say goodbye on the phone. My brother NEVER says goodbye or whatever, just click.
Not such a big deal once you get used to it and can expect it.
-
LOL and the telephon number are always in that format
XX 555 XXXX
 that was an abuse to the other possible numbers without a 555 serial inside !!!!
-
Many people sign off by saying "Talk to you later."
As if they weren't talking now. As if they weren't finished with the conversation. As if they couldn't wait to get on your perpetual calendar for endless chat.

I see no bashing of americans here.. I know that i always say bye when i get off the phone. :)

ok, i got a even better one for yah.....you ever notice that 90% of the time that a car that stops real quick in movies never has antilock-brakes. No matter what the tires always lock up and skid.
-
Not American made, Hollywood made. Everybody over here knows that Hollywood is in a completely different dimension.

I'm an American... and I always end my phone conversations with
"Add my number to your do not call list or I'm going to sue you the next time you call!!!"
That's AMERICAN!!!
-
Yeah, when they hear "click".
LMFAO:rofl :rofl :rofl
How about this Hollyrock nugget. The automatic pistol clicking endlessly when its empty?Or the Revolver with a silencer? How bout them duke boys allways screetching the tires on dirt?Hollywood has its own rules.None make sence either.

While you're at it, maybe you can explain the American obsession with Orthodontics.:D :D Although I can't talk, I have a chip on my tooth that needs fixing.
As for the original question, I suggest you call someone in America and see if they say goodbye. I think it's just movie convention like tyres screeching on dirt, phones always being answered immediately. The only time it's not answered is when the callee is dead which of course the caller immediately suspects. Never locking cars as they walk away and immediately getting a parking space right outside the place they visit. Helicopters that start on the button like a car and cars that won't start at all just when the axe murderer is pursuing you. Bombs are never defused until that last two seconds. People drive miles across town to say something that could better be said on the phone. Cars that explode like bombs in mid air halfway down a cliff.
Need I go on? No!
Goodbye!
-
We dont really say goodbye on the phone. Mostly just 'talk to you later', or see you at the lab, or see you when I get home... blah blah blah. Canadians on the other hand... They prefer the 'bye bye' line. Those things just sound silly to me. The french only say 'hello' when they answer the phone, never in normal greetings. Just an odd cultural thing.
Now, those damn british teeth. What is up with that. I love the antiques roadshow, but I cant even watch the original british version, its like watching the dental version of those car accident films for drivers education in high school.
