Pressurized Air is feeded in few cylinders. Dad was working for a company which was repairing those things. They're pretty impressive engines :)

I stood inside one of the cylinders of the Exxon Valdez's 32k HP engine when it was in drydock in San Diego undergoing repairs.
Kinda makes you feel....small.
edit to correct HP rating....and the effects on memory the '70's caused.
