I'm trying to break racial barriers.
"Without a Caucasian club things at school are kind of segregated and I think if we have a Caucasian club it will go along with the rest of the race clubs so the school might be a little bit more diverse."
The school is already home to the Black Student Union, the Asian Club and Latinos Unidos, an Hispanic club.
Pupils of all races can join any of the groups but Lisa says she does not fit in and believes her Caucasian club will help bridge the gap for many.
"I came home from school one day, the day we were signing up for clubs, and I didn't see any that really interested me.
"We were talking about how there are all these other racial clubs but there isn't a Caucasian club and me and my mom talked about it and how there would be nothing wrong with trying to get it started."
But ever since Lisa went public, she and the school have been in the spotlight.
The topic is a regular staple on American cable programmes and the favourite punch bag of right wing radio talk shows.
School principal Eric Volta has found the attention overwhelming but perhaps understandable.
"A club by that name tends to make people nervous. Even school administrators as far as what it's purpose is," he said.
"As long as it stays positive, it's not a problem."
And Lisa promises that it will be.
"It will be where kids can go and learn about their heritage and break down their culture more than the school does. Any race can join."
Divided opinions
A snapshot of opinion outside the school gates found support for the idea mixed, and centring on the race issue.
Patricia backs the club on one condition: "I think it would be okay as long as it wasn't meant to be racist."
Shayna, 15, does not understand what all the fuss is about.
"I really don't think it should be that big of a deal because there's the BSU [Black Student Union] and all that stuff already."
Angel, 16, applauds Lisa's idea.
"More power to her. We should have more white clubs around here."
Melissa, also 16, said: "I don't think it will cause any racial problems because there were no problems when the black club and the Asian club were being set up."
But 14-year-old African American Tarryn disagrees.
"It's dumb, real dumb. The girl says 'we want to talk about our background,' well their background is about putting black people as slaves."
Another 14 year old, Joe, is equally critical.
"I think it's really stupid. It's just racial separation and we got rid of that a long time ago."
Noose
Indeed some believe the whole affair has opened up old racial wounds within the school and the district.
Two years ago a swastika and anti-minority flyers were found in the boy's bathrooms at the school.
A black teacher found a noose made out of a shoelace hanging on the doorknob of his classroom in 2001 and tension mounted when a rope noose was discovered hanging from a tree on another school campus in the district last year.
Lisa McClelland said she had been on the receiving end of some racist barbs herself.
While she shrugs them off as part of the media circus, her mother Debbi Neely isn't so nonchalant.
"I'm very concerned about that and I'm keeping a close eye on it."
Darnell Turner of the local chapter of the NAACP civil rights group said of Lisa's club: "If her motivation is to bring harmony, as she alleges, this is not the way to go."
But far from having a negative impact on the school, Principal Volta says Lisa's proposed club has sparked a great debate.
"The level of conversation our students are having about their heritage, their culture, their background, fairness, equity and civil rights has been a very positive thing out of this experience."
Over the next two weeks Lisa plans to draw up the club's constitution and find a faculty adviser.
Ultimately the decision to give it a green light will lie with the principal, who said: "I will base it on what's fair and what's right for the students at Freedom High School."
Lisa says that if the proposal is rejected she and her mother will consider legal action.
Debbi Neely said: "I've raised my kids to be open-minded and I think at that point it would become a discrimination issue just due to the fact they have a black student union, a Latino club and an Asian club and at that time I would definitely file for discrimination."

fair enough, and you wont get any argument from me, as I father of 3 teenagers I well know how many stupid things can come out of a mouth that age.
the problem is that nobody will correct that dumb viewpoint of hers, in fact they'll encourage it. and any time something in life doesn't go her way, that idea will be brought back up and waved like a flag.
not all blacks feel like she does, I doubt you could even say most. but there's enough that do to fill many political action groups.
maybe the white club can work on dispelling the anti-white stereo types-
that all whites owned slaves (I never did, I promise), and all blacks where slaves, that no blacks owned slaves, or the big one 'that whites are responsable for all the problems facing black america'

The problem with starting all "white" groups is their history. The ones the rednecks started in the south didnt pan out to well, so any new ones are looked down on.

More power to her. I have often wondered what would happen if any white kid dared try this. Time we stopped living in the dream world of "only whites are racist".

agreed. most of the ones started by (we) rednecks didn't pan out is based in hate and intolerance for what they don't know. I live in a part of America that habors some of these groups. I know most of there hate is base in fear, fear of what they don't understand.
I think people should be thrown out of thier comfort zones and forced to live and count on with people they think are different (ie military). It opened my eyes to a whole new world.

This is a little off toopic but sort of fits here:
By there (meaning the NAACP and other racist groups) way of thinking there were no white people living in the north and fighting the south in the civil war...
My family came here from Norway, lived in the north (what was at the time north west, Iowa.) Some of my ancesters died fighting for the union, trying to free the slaves (this is really what the civil war way about). So, I have a question, when the African Americans get their $ for the evil doings of us white people I want to know 2 things.
1: Are the African Americans going to have to prove they were the decendants of slaves, or is being black enough.
2: Am I going to get my money for the relitives I lost during the war who died freeing their ancestors. :eek:
Now before you go pointing fingers and calling me a racist you need to know this: I am the furthest thing you will ever find from a racist, I believe that skin color means nothing, after all they didn't teach me "Black anatomy, white anatomy, asian anatomy"...ect in paramedic school. There is only Human anatomy. That must mean we are all the same...right?

I want to start a club based solely on blood type (A+, the best blood type in the world). We could sit around and make fun of the O-neggers and AB halfbreeds.

I firmly believe in reparations for all those who were slaves in the USA prior to the civil war, and are still alive. Not a dime for anyone who wasn't personally a slave.

B17Skull, the school already has black and hispanic clubs. I'd agree with you 100% if you can only explain why that isn't racist, and a white club is.

good for her! seems like today the "white" guys cant do anything without the African Amaricans screaming about slaves.
What gets me is the young people screaming about slaves when they have never been a slave and there parants make 60k a year.

I do know a few "black" guys who i have never heard use the slave word. There view is: it happened if it didnt happen i wouldnt be here.
People who scream about slaves have no argument, there grabing onto something they know will get attention from the media. And if you are against the "black" person when they scream about slaves then you are racist....thats not right!

I work for a large worldwide company.
We have the following groups in the USA....
1. Black Employee Community
2. Hispanic Employee Community
3. Women Employee Cummunity
I can just imagine the contraversy if I tried to start like a White Male Employee Community. It might be fun if I was prepared to find employment elsewhere.

Well B17, as your state is under wholesale invasion from the south (and since Davis signed that retarded bill that will encourage more illegals to flood your state) I'd pretty much say a race war is inevitable at some point. Either that or you'll see "white flight" on a scale hitherto unseen in modern times.
That may be a little hyperbolic, but let's just watch and see. ;)
Anyway, the point is simple; white guilt is way out of hand. That any NAACP representative can stand up and say starting a white group is racist and divisive is insanely funny and hypocritical, given what the NAACP is about. It also confirms any stereotypical suspicion any white ever had about such "advancement" organizations. You just knew the second any white started an organization about "white pride" the black groups were gonna jump all over it.
I'll say this too... if the school does anything to stop the white group from meeting (assuming it remains a positive group) I hope the families sue the school to kingdom come. This social indoctrination of politically correct viewpoint crap has to stop.
