The saying goes, Don't look a gifted horse in the mouth. For those who don't understand what that means, it's try not to demand too much from something that is a gift.
The irrate bashing I have seen on Jesters map makes me want to call Doug and Dale and have them shut down the CT. As a result, Jester has decided to leave the CT staff.
Couple of points.[list=1]- The purpose of the Combat Theatre is to develop historical combat scenarios that took place during WWII. Within that context, we look a gameplay, aircraft balancing, and the purpose of each and every scenario.
- The Combat Theatre is not an extension of the Main Arena with an elite dog fighting club for those tired of 30 vs 30 encounters. It is an arena that takes a moment in time and places it on a 256x256 or 512x512 enclosure.
- All CT staff have a say in the setups with over 15 years of combined arena experience. Every setup goes through an approval process. When we try something different, we gain experience in setup configurations so we can do to make the CT a better place.
- As CT players, the staff understands that people get passionate about gameplay issues, etc from the historical setups. We listen to your comments and make adjustments on the current map, or we take note for next time.
What is not fun is when there is an underlying feeling of unappreciation, distain, and ignorant retorts that make us feel that it not worth the abuse we take. That's not cool, and it's not appreciated.
While the CT staff ponders our next setup, keep in mind that we try our best to serve you guys. This is your arena but it is also a volunteered job on our part. Please keep that in mind when you play or post here in the forums.
-
Well, sorry to see anyone give it up, and Jester deserves thanks for the time he volunteered. But criminy, the complaints about this setup have been mild compared to some others.
It's nearly impossible to craft a setup that doesn't elicit some form of whining from some quarter, and I would be hardpressed to name one now -- although I'm sure we've had a couple that were NEARLY whine-free.
Jester's a big boy. He can take some heat. If that's all it was, I'd say he was looking for an opportunity to step aside.
whatever your reasons, Jester. But in my own humble opinion, complaints -- with a few exeptions -- have been measured and backed up with facts.
Fork:
Thanks for putting points 1-4 down in writing. From where do they come? I don't believe I've ever seen any official declaration of policy regarding what the CT is supposed to be.
to the CT staff for the abuse they take.

Honestly I totally agree with Fork here... It seems that the CT has just become a Historical Dueling Arena. We can all nit pick about little things but when it boils down to it, we all meet here everyday, almost, to do battle with each other. When I joined the CT almost a year ago, we actually tried to fly missions, now if you do your just a dweeb... or whatever... I think that is just a shame. I for one am just tired of all the constint bashing on Channel 1. It is almost become a norm in the CT. Well, I have axis pilots that I like to talk to, I can hear it now. Why don't you just squelch channel one or just private them... the point being I shouldn't have to... We are all adults, we should be able to get along with out all that stuff.
Honestly I think the CT Staff does a pretty good job with the tools they have... There will always be things in set ups that we don't agree with or don't want... Honestly there is more than one arena in this game other than the CT... You can use them too...
Jester, sorry to see you go. Your a good person and I know you put a lot of time into this... I know I couldn't deal with what you CT staffers go though.. Hope to see you back in the saddle again...

Gee I hate to hear such.
Jester, thanks for all you did to make the CT fun for me personally. If I ever offended you, let me apologize now and please accept same. I sincerely hope you will reconsider, you only add with your work and presence.
It strikes me that war itself is hardly fair or perfectly balanced. Why we would expect perfection of anything that resembled war is irrational. I reckon it is a reflection of our spoiled, instant gratification cluture. That's the pop psychology lecture for the day, I hope you enjoyed it.
I kind of like the fear of it not being perfect, you know, the apprehension of how things will play out adds to the whole thing for me. But I have to say looking back and on the whole, most arenas are likely far more balanced than the war ever was, especially since so many folks tend to jump sides to try and keep numbers in a semblance of equity.

It's not the post on this board that did it. It was some individuals on both sides of the Allied / Axis fence Friday night. It was outrageous, uncalled for, and some of the worse dribble I've seen yet.
I hate he resigned, but who wants to put up with that kind of crap. We're lucky we got a CT , we keep bashing the guys who set it up, it won't last much longer.
Jester!
-
Sorry to see you go Jester,
and sorry for being one of the whiney-dorks.
I don't blame anyone for dumping a CM position, it's an ugly job and complaints outnumber praise 10:1.
Thanks for all that you have done, and I hope to see you flying more often now that you have a bit more time on your hands.

Jester .. thanks for trying. I think you'll be happier.
-
I just read this after I wrote to "Current setup" thread. As I say there: Variations refresh us!
Jester, it's great that you gave alternative setups and maps, the crew here are sometimes so conservative and calcified with their familiar circles they even don't notice it!
Don't care of them, we need always experimental persons, without us ( ;) ) the mankind should be still in the stone age! :D
-
It sucks that jester resigned.
-
<
> Jester. I personally have no qualms with the setup, its different.. and different is good.
I agree too that the attitude around the CT has just gotten plain rotten. I've noticed a decline in the relatively short time I was here, and its.. quite frankly, made me reconsider flying on Aces at all because I'm so tired of hearing the same things over and over.
I can't even imagine what its like to have that crap directed at you; for staying with it so long, Jester.. to the rest of the CT Staff that's still dealing with the crybaby whiners and a giant THANK YOU for doing the 'dirty work'.
-
Jester,
Even though I wasn't one of the people making the derogatory comments, you have my sincerest apologies that I didn't speak up publicly on your behalf. I don't believe for a second that you'd ever do anything that you didn't feel was right, no matter which side was benefitted.
I would never expect you to subject yourself again to the same abuse but please know you have my deepest respect.

Jester for your time and energy in CT
as this setup goes, just suggested a smaller map would make for better gameplay considering the low numbers in CT - I whine more about all the PTO setups :)
-
! Jester, sorry to see you go

Yaknow .... after thinkin' bout it for awhile .... shame on you, Fork.
But never look a gifted horse in the eye. Oh wait .... err ... "never look a gift horse in the mouth." Which means since the CT is a gift ..... never look it in the mouth. Errrr .... "don't give no mouth to a gifted horse in the CT." Ummmm ..... "don't give no lip to the guy in the slip." No ... wait wait .... "never complain about an airplane." Ugh .... no ..... let's try ..... "never in the field of human endevour have so many owed so much to ...."
Ok ..ok ...
Jester has every right to quit .. or to stay. He's given it his best, I'm sure. But CT players have every right to disagree or complain if they feel something ain't right. So ... if you're saying they don't because Jester was a volunteer, Fork .... I don't agree. Of course, you're never gonna please everyone all the time.
If it's the way players make their complaints .... I doubt you'll even change that. I'd take it as a given that anyone who volunteers to manage the CT, given the insulation the CT staff often puts between itself and the players (at times ... depending on who .. on either end), should expect to deal with such complaints made in such ways on a regular basis. And threatening to call HT to get the whole works shut down doesn't impress or intimidate me in the slightest. Hell, it smacks of downright brattish "I'll take my ball and go home if you don't play the way I want you to." Is that really what you want to convey, given what you accuse the entire CT community of being?
Besides .... you should leave it to Jester to make such an announcement ... if he chooses to. This wouldn't be the first time you played the drama queen prematurely.
Ahem ... just `cause I thought it needed sayin'. Anyways ... back to the pity party thread. (No offense meant to Jester)

So exactly who is the CT for? The players or the Staff? Keep in mind I have never bashed a CT staffer for their setup and have often offered appreciation for their efforts.
But the statement above really perterbs me and if this is the stance the CT staff chooses to take in part or whole. May I suggest to whomever is in charge to take a little time to revaluate exactly what they are trying to accomplish in the CT.

While I think it is quiet clear to everyone, including Comrad Fork that this is simply not going to hapen, I would of thought it equily clear that this simply is an expreshion of the frustration shared by the Staff at times.
I personaly feal feadback from the comunity is important and is often given more consideration than is realised by the comunity. Howeaver at times it can become a bit of a pain, the trick is not minding that it is pain:)
-
I was quite aware of the obvious. I was more concerned with the mindset of the CT staff. Frustration or not statements like that can't be good for the cause.
How does one go about being a CT staffer? Sounds like you need a couple people with slightly lower estrogen levels.
-
Bug,
That was the stupidist comment I've heard yet. No one worked harder than Jester to make fair and fun scenarios. Have some respect and some class.
-
Jester
, sorry to see you resign bud but I can certainly understand why. The CT is not what it used to be, at least not to me. Anyway, good luck with Udet and all. Bear, , see ya around bud.
-
Well Jester thanks for donating your time for the CT. And to all of you thanks. Lets make this particular thread what it should be, which is a grand salute to Jester for his time and effort.
-
I hear ya Jeb ... but I'd rather start a new one. Still ..
-
Well the current set-up as pointed out in other threads is fine as far as planeset goes but map choice was the main issue. I did not see any major complaints in the thread to warrant someone quitting.
As for comments online ... why do these idiots get to mouth off at will to EVERYONE (not just the CT staff)? I have logged time and time again because people like SHANE (naming names here because i'm sick of his mouth) are spewing filth over the entire arena.
I mute him but jeez don't you CT staff have the ability to mute and eject tards like that? Perhaps it's time you start doing it for the benifit of the rest of us.
Jester a sincere ! ... as a CM trust me I know how it feels to be in the middle of a ****estorm of complaints. At the end of the day you can look at your work and can be proud of it. There are always going to be people who want it this way or that. Think of them as the 1% that will never be happy. That doesn'y make them whiners ... more like perfectionists. That map Big Week has caused so much grief I wish it would go away .... anyone remember the bigweek whinefest???
-
Jester
Thank you for the time and energy you have expended to try and entertain us. I appreciate your efforts.

Sorry to see this happen. I thought the setup idea was a good one and I can't imagine how anybody could justify being abusive over something like this.
Jester.
-
When I was a CT CM and ran a similiar set up on this map it was populated and from what I heard was fun.
I did it a bit different and ran it late 43. I also put specific planes at specific bases. On the fighters like the p38 and p47s I killed all the ammo hangers and forced umm to fly light. Only the bombers (b17, b26 and lanc) had ord. There was no base capture. Field objects were made very hard so no base porking by hvy fighters (cause there werent none) and no low level suicide bomber porking the fields. I increased base flash range to max and reduced radar just enough to create gaps where the bombers could fly through.
The 1 base in italy was allied as well.
I adjusted the fuel mod so that escorts needed dts to get the bombers all they to target.
It was focussed on bombing escort and interception rather then main type play.
However from the western most field in france to england there was solid furballing. It was a good time.
Most of the new ct types are mostly main ex-pats who just use the less populated ct to perfect their milkrunning. The rest have gotten to addicted to the instant action of the recent setups. Aint nothing wrong with any of that.
But if you dont like the set up come back in a week. I dont see why folks feel necessary to jump all over the ct cm. The ct isnt run by committee. The CT CMs volunteeer their time and effort to develop a set up. They run their setups. If you dont like umm then its only a week.
Maybe Jester just needed to borrow Bradys flak suit :)
Looks like there room for a CT CM, which one of ya loud mouths are going to volunteer?
-
Thanks for your efforts, Jester <
>.
Sorry this had to happen to you. I don't blame you for walking away from all the grief. Just don't take it too personally. For every person that whines there are 3 or 4 people that trully appreciate the hard work of the CM's.
-
Been there jester. Sorry you felt the need to go. :( You did some good work.

No need for name calling. It was a thread about Jester and easily viewed as being directed at him.

Twit he says.......... BLOODY EL ! Wha a cheeky bastage this one is. Bear you going to sit there and take that like some bloody great hybernating bruin?? Knock the piss outta him mate!!
;)
Sheesh guys everybody calm down and laugh this one off. If not it'll just go down the toilet. It's been bad enough. This whole thing has been a run away snow ball since Friday night. It's gone from an arguement over the plane set to CM's pitted against players, now it's going to players against players. Knowing Jester like I do, he stepped down to stop the watermelon storm, not make it worse.
Somebody post one them CT group nuthug threads or something!:D
-
Some people are sick of the player's assumed whining, and then some are tired of the CM's assumed whining. But let's not forget the usually silent group that is just sick of everyone's whining.
This thread's title hardly makes it a salute thread to Jester. If it had been, I would not of posted. Please keep the facts straight before posting, thank you.
You are correct Bear76 twit was uncalled for, it was a knee jerk reaction to "stupidest comment" (edited quote due to lower than intelligent spelling). Hehe, no truly I'm sorry about the twit comment.
-
u guys bashed on Jester..this man spent hours on makin a map , i would like to c u guys try to be a CM and make the setups...i bet some of u guys would'nt have a clue where to start on setting up a map...and gettin mad over an areana setup  ..thats just pathetic
i would like to say to jester for all ur hard work
-
Thankyou for your time and effort jester.
But - as paying customers shouldn't we have every right to post our views; whether they are constructive or not? Seems to me he took complaints about a bad setup personally, instead of just trying to fix the problems highlighted by the people who have to play in CT.
Was a nice attempt at representing the bomber offensive, just needed a little tweaking.
-
Furball.
Jester didn't quit because of things posted on the BBS. He quit because of abuse he went through Firday night in the CT. If you were not there to see it, it's understandable to think he was just being over sensitive about things posted on this BBS.
That isn't the case at all. He took a lot of un needed crap from an Axis player complaining about the P-51B being in the setup. He listened to this guy complain about dates , and when the P-51B became operational. He decided to pull the P-51B until Wednesday , when he announced that he got it worse from a couple of guys on the Allied side.
He's no wilting lilly , he took it all in stride. He didnt get as mad about it as I did. He just said he didn't need this crap anymore and hung up his CM hat.
If he did anything wrong it was trying to please everyone. He's a good guy. He would never purposely screw one side over the other.
It's happened we all might as well move on . One thing though......... He didnt quit because he's too sensitive. Nobody who had to go through all that Firday night would want to stay on.
-
well, gee, i go to play softball and see what i missed fri nite? i'd probably have been there deflecting whoever it was from ragging on jester. ;)
ponyb in this setup doesn't imbalance things and gives a nice alternative to those who are unmanly enough to slug it out with a jug.
-
ahhh ok lowe, didn't know that.
thanks for telling me! that sucks
-
Well, most of the furballing I saw was on the deck (from the safety of my GV) and the P-51B stalls like a motherf#@%#@ down there. I liked the P-47 and P-38 much better than the P-51B. The right wing on the P-51B has a bad stall when trying to turn with the 109. I'm sure its me though...right Shane?:rofl
