Title: Meet my new co-workers... (I'm a movie extra!)
Post by: LePaul on September 29, 2003, 07:58:44 PM
HBO is filming a movie in the area called "Empire Falls" (based on the book)...2 months ago they had open auditions for small roles and extras...or you could just fill out a form, drop off your self pic and hope for a call.  Over 3,000 turned up.

Somehow, I made the cut and got the call 2 weeks asking if I was interested and still available.  Sure!

Here's the IMDB link to the movie info  http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0376591/

Quite a cast, Paul Newman, Helen Hunt, Ed Harris, William Fitchner, etc...I've met and spoke to the latter a lot.  They both agree anyone who carpets their garage is a lunatic :p   Seriously, very down to earth and nice people.

So far I've just been an extra in the sense I walk the background, drive my car up and down the street as they ask...or follow them for the in car scenes...its an amazing process.  This is the second big film I've been an extra in.

I snapped a bunch of pics, but for the sake of brevity I thought I would share these two...

So far I've been there 2 days.  Its rather grueling...its just over an hour away and I have to report to the set at 6am.  So its early to bed and up at 4am...they've asked me to come down again Tuesday and perhaps for additional shoots later.

Oh..the pay?  $6.75 per hour for 8 hours, OT beyond that.  I get $25 a day anytime they use my vehicle in a shot.  So, while I'm burning up vacation days, I'm earning a lil bit of $$ and hanging out with stars....I love it!

I would say Stalker but that is too nice of a word to use.

Get out and meet real people and you will find out they are just as nice and cool as the ones in the spotlight.

They needed someone to fill a freak star wars fan with an R2D2 robot role?  Do they give you a light saber or do you have to bring your own?

LePaul, you should demand Evian water and 5 bowls of jelly beans with the black ones removed to your trailer every day...  they will respect your craft more that way

Very cool to be in a movie. Just don't tape it and then 10 years from now try to impress a date by freeze frameing it and pointing to a blury head far in the background and saying:

"See that was me back when I used to be an actor"

I agree.  I can't help but wonder if smoking is starting to take its toll.

And to think the guy used to be a football player.

Oh yeah, now he looks familiar.  He's the guy that goes deaf because the other guy fires the SAW too close to his ear.

He was also in Armageddon. IMHO, he was hilarious in "What's the Worst That Could Happen?"

Helen isn't in yet, she is scheduled for filming later on.

Today we shot a BUNCH of scenes and yet again, my car was planeted in several of them.  Since the book/movie is based in 1998, they wanted cars from that era or before.  My Saturn Coupe is a 1995..black.  Several weeks ago, they asked what color it was...black was a color they didnt want for the location shots they were shooting.  But, since Saturday, its been in several.

I also did a double take when I saw Ed Harris.  He wasnt as bug a guy as I expected.  Paul Newman is the same story...he's showing his age pretty good.

Fitchner is just great...I mean from a tiny lil ole extra...to have this guy come up to you, thank you for being there and watermelon chatting with you just blows your mind.  He was telling my about Bruce Willis (since Willis was in the paper for his Iraq tour) and stuff from the filming of Armageddon

Dennis Farina talked about him too...he was in a flick with Willis (and Sarah Jessica Parker) a while back..."Striking Distance"...its amazing how many credits these guys have...and have been around for a long time too.

Anyways, no pics today...just put in another 11 hour day there.  The best thing asides meeting the stars in the catering vans!  Amazing food.

I'm told I'll be getting a call shortly for additional shots, they are changing locations for a few days.

If you ever have a chance to participate in one of these things, do it!  Its amazing what goes into a production like this.
