Title: Can you fry a MB by... ?
Post by: daddog on September 30, 2003, 09:14:04 AM
Putting in the USB connection the wrong way? Specifically I plugged in two extra USB ports to my USB MB pins and when I turned it on I watched a sparks and flame come from the MB very close to that location. I was told by the local computer store folks where I tried to return the power supply it was because I placed it on the MB backwards.

This possible?

Any equation that includes the variables Motherboard, Sparks, and Flames will almost always have a result that includes $$ signs.

when you open up the box and do anything,  and then see sparks and/or flames when you turn on the power,  the odds are very, very, very high that YES, it is something you did.

I ask this because if it is the power supply then the next board I hook it up to will fry. If it is my mistake then I have a good power supply.

So a USB connector on the MB, if placed backwards will cause flames, sparks and fry it.  Soooo I should be able to use the power supply again you think?

One of the slots on the connector should be plugged so you can't put it on wrong, if I remember correctly. I have an Antec PS checker which basically jumpers the 2 pins which start the PS. Give me a moment and I will find out which two pins to jumper and then you can test the voltages with meter.....

fyi; I still have 500Mhz sys and a 933 P3 MB available for your sec sys if you want..... both with w2k...

It can/could have gone either way on the MB I burned. :(

Thanks Maddog, I really appreciate that... I should be good to go. Both Jed and I will be up and running in a week or so. :)

On the ATX power conx for the mobo, use a small jumper between the green and black wire next to it.

This will start the power supply w/out being plugged into the mobo, so you can check out the power supply voltages.

I've connected the USB connectors backwards before, and it didn't fry anything.  It caused some really strange errors, but nothing failed, and when I reconnected properly everything was fine.
