The Redskins football team can keep its trademark name and logos, a federal judge ruled this morning, because a group of District activists didn't provide enough evidence that the team's moniker insulted and disparaged a substantial numbers of Native Americans.

I agreed with the group that filed the lawsuit to have the name changed. Then I read that the team was named in honor of its head coach.
Not sure where I stand on it now.

How would this sound Well Bill the New York Niggas put a woppin on the chicago chinks today.
Harsh but do you see my point.
I guess cause the Indians dont go running around cryin bout the way they where treated we forget that the white man almost KILLED em all off:(

You just made the opposite point - the term "redskins" doesnt have any racial connotation today, although it might have 100 years ago. Its more like naming a team the "philistines" or the "Huns"

Considering the fact I'm Irish and that their mascott looks like one of my uncles, I'm going to be filing a lawsuit against Notre Dame in the next day or two. My attorney's are also looking carefully at the Boston Celtics, the Dallas Cowboys/Univ. of Wyoming Cowboys (I used to rope and ride horses after all), the ASU Sun Devils (I'm a Christian and I went to U of A), and several other teams.
This culture of hate must stop!!!!

I just think white people dont care when we get made fun of. Just a while back a group had a team called the "fighting whities" I'm white and I thaught it was hilarious....but than again I dont beleive in racism AT ALL so I laugh when i hear about white people on campuses holding affirmative action bake sales (posted in another thread here) still chuckle when i hear the idea
I think its all just dumb.
if there was a team "the green bay honkies" I'd definately get one of there hats or shirts:lol

no , the redskins should change their name to SAXONS, then i will never have to read "redskins defeat vikings", instead it will say "saxons defeat vikings", which is historically correct.

Small pox was indeed in blankets that were distributed to Natives in the 1800's.
But the name of a modern sports team has absolutely nothing to do with what happened more than 100 years ago.
To spend political capital on the name of a sports franchise is a waste of resources. It has been correctly pointed out that Notre Dame's logo is demeaning to Irish people as it deals with the steroetype that Irish are violent louts; no one is demanding change in that case.
There are many other extremely important issues that the Native American community needs to address. Pine Ridge SD is the center of the most poverty stricken county in the USA, due mostly to what a welfare state does to the people who live within it.
Drug and alcohol abuse if our youth, joblessness, and anti-social behaviors of all types do more than just tarnish our heritage. It is difficult to pass on the ways of the elders when the youngers are in such a state.
We are becoming casino employees... profits go to outside investors, and bypass the tribes that they were intended to benifit. I doubt Crazy Horse would approve.

Although I probly don't have a drop of indian blood in me.... I was "native american" on my last loan application... if I were gonna open a casino I would be indian again. May as well get some use out of all that liberal guilt.
