I just wonder if ESPN demanded or just accepted his resignation like the release says.
BTW...the NY Daily....ummm....news is reporting this:
http://www.nydailynews.com/front/story/122839p-110349c.html
But please, consider the source :)
I wonder, IF true, how the ditto heads will reconcile his staunch
anti drug message claiming the righteousness of mandatory drug
offence sentencing?
-
glad Rushbo quit/was fired from ESPN. The truth will probably not be known until long past the time anyone cares about it anymore.
About the drug thing - I need to see an indictment before any of it gets taken seriously. This could be just be a smear campaign by a disgruntled former employer or it could be an attempt by her to roll on someone else after she herself has been caught distributing - which she of course has admitted.
if it is true then Rushbo should go to rehab not jail, just like so many others SHOULD. However, ironically he himself contributed to the mindset in this country that we are too soft on prisoners and criminals and must be at least partly responsible for the lack of rehabilitative services and funding for drug treatment for convicted felons.
oxy is a big problem in my area and the courts are full of users and dealers. I have never heard it called hillbily heroin but that is funny as hell

Funny how a white man makes his opinion known that is questionable regarding african-american racial preference in sports and he gets cricified, while the same thing said about preferential treatment for white athletes by an african-american is celebrated.
Double Standards....

Rush Limbaugh - the Champion of poor down-trodden middle class white quarter-backs everywhere!
And remember - he isn't a right wing nutcase!
Get a grip.
-
Thank didn't take long did it? I don't see what he was doing on the show in the first place. I watch football to get away from politics.
-
That's ridiculous. "Please don't talk about a QB getting attention because he's black. But, don't hire a white coach or we'll chastise you for not hiring a black coach."
-
Rush still denies he said anything racist. He doesn't understand why everyone is upset. He was just talking about the "media."
Rush! Your day of ignorance and insensitivity has come - good bye!
Good riddence to bad rush-bish!
Everyone forgets when Rush told a black phone caller to "take the bone out of his nose" and call back. That was only one of many racial statements he's made over the years.
-
I think Al Franken said it best.
-
The subject of race has become sooo taboo these days it's ridiculous. If liberals/democrats were so far advanced socially, they wouldn't call for a firing over statements like what Limbaugh said...
"I think what we've had here is a little social concern in the NFL. The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well,'' Limbaugh said. "There is a little hope invested in McNabb, and he got a lot of credit for the performance of this team that he didn't deserve. The defense carried this team."
BIG DEAL. Maybe what he said was not accurate, maybe it was way off the mark. He did not say all black QB's are overrated, just that he thinks this one got more credit than he deserves because he is a minority. Can these things not be talked about?? or should anyone who mentions it be immediately muzzled?
What cracks me up is the demo pres. candidates. Of course they trip over themselves to chime in with scathing remarks trying to gobble up the black vote.
-
I don't think the right would enjoy their favorite Sunday sports show as much if they had to listen to spew his thoughts on the NFL.
My football season has been saved. Thank you.
-
Can these things not be talked about?? or should anyone who mentions it be immediately muzzled?
The exact same thing could be said about the Dixie Chicks's comments regarding the president, and was. The people that criticized them, trashed their records, and led radio boycots all said "They have the right to say what they said, and we have a right to act against them because of it".
Ditto Rush.
-
Apparently some think that suppressing talk about race eliminates bigotry. While it may create the fear of being labled a bigot, suppressing the talk does nothing to eliminate bigotry but likely has the opposite effect.
I think it would be much better to be able to discuss things openly and let the light of day reveal the truth. Sometimes seeing and admitting the truth is painful but it's usually the first step toward making things truly better.
-
Why isn't Affirmative Action applied to sports. O YA we want the “BEST” applicants.
-
There was absolutely nothing racist about Rush's comment. But it was absolutely stupid as far as sport's commentary. If he thinks McNabb is overrated he should just say so and leave the political analysis out of it. Plus, he should have had enough sense to know that any mention of race from him would stir up a firestorm. And his use of the tired "freedom of speech" defense is beyond lame. He said what he said, now he has live with peoples' reactions. Freedom of speech is not the issue, it almost never is with these controversies.
ra
-
what did ESPN hire him for in the first place?
Starting in September, Limbaugh, 52, will join the show's line-up as the "voice of the fan," delivering an opinion piece near the top of the two-hour telecast each week, the Walt Disney Co.-owned sports network said on Monday.
his opinion - that's all his statement was - and he has to quit because of it - WTG!
where's the freedom of speech ppl? oh yeah - over there on the left ...
-
I fully support Rush's first amendment right to state his opinions on ESPN, and hang himself in the process.
-
It's sad that many racists don't see themselves as racists. Why would they. They just don't understand what's wrong with what they say... they see themselves as exercising their free speach.
Rush Limbaugh is a racist.
This is not an opinion - His own words support this point of view.
Not just one comment... many comments over many years.
It's not a matter whether certain subjects can't be talked about - it's how they are talked about and the intent behind the words and the thoughts they infer..
Rush wants to denigrate McNabb and the media because McNabb is black - not becuase McNabb is a QB who had a bad start... because he's black, and he's getting media coverage - which in Rush's opinion is only due because he's black - and Rush say's explicitly that this coverage is due to a "media" agenda to promote blacks over whites.
Does Rush offer any proof to this? Like memo's from editors, or statistics to show McNabb is a very poor performer compared to white QBs?
No... because there is no evidence to support Rush's opinion..
So what is Rush's opinion based on? Could it be? Racism.
Well since skin color is the issue which Rush brings up - it's is Racism.
That's Rush's ignorance speaking - like every other time he speaks - it's from ignorance and racism.
Rush assume that this nebulous undefined "media" is in control of people's thinking. This is the common spittle that spews from his mouth on his radio show. The much hated "Libral Media."
Which by the way, factually, if one likes to know faces, the Pew Charitable Trust did a study of media coverage and they found statistically speaking the Media in this country is RIGHT WING CONSERVATIVE!!
The reality is McNabb is a QB because he is a damn good one.
Not because he's black.
But Rush and his right wing conservatives are stuck in the pre-1964 thinking, where Blacks can't do what whitie can do - and if they can it's because they needed help from the liberals.
Why do I say this? What's my proof. Rush's words prove it for me.
There is no liberal media conspiracy - but there is a right wing conspiracy to reverse many social reforms in America, and that's what Rush is promoting with his comments and his racial remarks.
-

Rush is free to say whatever he likes, but ESPN is afterall, a business. I don't know the details of his "resignation", but the backlash from his opinion is enough for ESPN to take steps. Mainstream media panders to the middle. If they stray too far in either direction and there is controversy, you can bet that they will play it safe and head for the center.

What a pearl this is. You win the cigar.
Watch a Chris Rock or Martin Lawrence comedy bit, pay close attention to when the routine turns to picking on non-african americans. Now envision someone like Billy Crystal saying these things about blacks. Watch the media crucify him.
You aren't allowed to point out the obvious these days. Taboo. Forget the majority, its minority rule...we have to be *sensitive* to their needs, yada yada
strk...you're full of hate...Rush resigned...so stop calling Oliver Stone and hunting for a conspiracy theory. Your hate of this guy is blinding you.
I'd *really* like to think Jessie Jackson isnt the voice of the majority of african americans. The victim card can only be played so long...

Do you have a link to this study?
Pew Charitable Trust is a decent non-partisan organization. They funded a multi-year project I worked on focused on streamlining the appointment of presidential nominees and preparing presidential candidates for the mayhem of the transition period (link (http://www.whitehouse2001.org/) here).
This study of media bias sounds odd coming from them since they prefer projects that produce tangible, practical applications for the government. But anyway, I'd like to take a look at it in any event.

So, DmdNexus, any time race is brought up in regards to a job or application or position, it should be dismissed as racist remark?
There's no proof of the good ol' boy network, does that mean mentioning its possible existance makes you a bigot?

Ditto Rush.
There's a difference between a football player and the President of the United States in time of war in terms of 'situational gravity'.
And 'ditto' would be people not watching the ESPN show or allowing ESPN to be turned on in their bar, restaurant, etc. while the show was on.
Or 'ditto' would be the Dixie Chicks being dropped by their label.

:::shrugs::: Rush shoved "the media", "the media" shoved back. Hard.
-
Man, you guys are still arguing this? I still dont see where Rush's comment are 'racist.' They may be stupid, but they arent racist.
The definition of the word 'racist' has been mutated over the years to include everything even remotely approaching the color of ones skin.
Hanging a sign outside your restaurant that says "No Colored" is racist. Burning a cross on the lawn of a black family is racist. Inflicting harm on someone for no other reason than the color of his or her skin is racist. Denying someone a job simply because of his skin color, even if hes qualified, is racist.
Stating that a black quarterback in the NFL has been propped up by the media simply because he's black is -not- racist... if anything, the preferential treatment afforded to a black quarterback by the media is racist. All Rush did was call out the double standard and try to expose the mindset of the people who think this way. The comment wasnt even aimed at McNabb, he was just the example. A fireman, policeman, military officer, or government official who is black/oriental/latino is proped up on that same ladder and could just as easily been substituted for a football player.
Rush is entertaining, but hardly where you should be getting your information on everything - his attack on the MEDIA resulted in a counter attack by the MEDIA. If youre buying into John Smith's commentary on the Channel 3 News about how Rush is a bigot, then I feel sorry for you. Hell, Id bet that a majority of the talking heads and visable personalities associated with the sport are coming out against Rush's comments simply because they are terrified that they will be nailed to a cross too if they dont.
Great society we've built here, dont you think? Youre free to speak your mind as long as it agrees with the current trend. If your opinion differs from the accepted social norms (hey, I almost defined 'Liberal' there) youre free to be forced through fear of percecution to conform.
One more double standard to add to the growing pile.

Ah Dowding....what he said was the right on truth...here in this country, the media hypes many things for many reasons....black quarterbacks and coaches have been actively a part of the NFL and it's owners discussions for years now...the politically correct thing to do.
The media has brought and referenced many times the same point Rush made....his timing and the format were both misplaced....still, the content of what he said cannot be denied. Our media has on many occasions spoke in detail of the criticism by black athletes and coaches along with other groups regarding the inclusion of blacks in the interviewing process, etc. When one does make the position, the media pays specific attention to it.
Having said the above, be it known that while I may agree in concept with some subject matter which Rush engages, I have now and always viewed him as arrogant and simply entertainment on the radio.
-
To infer that he got 'special treatment' based on the colour of his skin to attain the position he holds, is slanderous. It is unsubstanciated insult. Racist? I'd say denigrating someone based on skin colour, even indirectly as in this case, is racist.

Why didn't he get include hyped white QB's? How many years was Jake Plummer a flop in Arizona? Yet he was always hyped. I think if he were to make a general statement of overhyped QB's, you could say his comments were not racist. But he pointed to a black one and mentioned his skin color.

He did not infer that....he stated clearly, that he had been hyped, not given the position.

>>Do you have a link to this study?
I can cite the study and you can get the details from there. I'll post it when I get home.
"When you take the bone out of your nose call me back" - That's a racist comment uttered by Mr. Rush and said to a black caller.
Just one of hundreds racial remarks made by this "moral" person.
>>Stating that a black quarterback in the NFL has been propped up by the media simply because he's black is -not- racist...
Saddly it is racism - because Rush is purporting that the media has an agenda, and that agenda is to promote black QBs. Rush has no evidence to support this arguement. On the contrary McNabb's record speaks for it self - he is a damn good QB and has earned that job.
Sure Rush was stating his opinion... it's his standard rhetoric against the "libral media" and minorities. [Hey wait Rush is in the media! he's syndicated in over 600 markets - Rush is the MEDIA] It is his tired and true belief that minorities however successful they may become are only successful because some libral "social" agenda promoted them to that position and in no way did they earn it. Sounds very much like White Supremacy - oh wait! It is! Just packaged in a PC pill delivered with a tie and suit!
It's sad that Rush could only see color here as for the reason the sports media likes McNabb. It's a shame that Rush can't see that perhaps McNabb is potentionally a very good QBs and that's why sports writers like him - not because he's black... just because he's skilled and has worked hard to get where he is.
If Rush were to quote a media article about McNabb that mentioned his race and stated his position was because of his race - then his statement would NOT be racist but just a comment about the "social" agenda that the libral media is promoting on behalf of black QBs. But where is that citation from Rush's mouth? When's that going to come forth?
But no Rush choose to focus on McNabb's color and the attention he is getting from the media and he draws up only one conclusion - the same anti-minority conclusion he always comes too.
Rush is and has always been a Racist. The worst kind of racist, one that doesn't wear his colors as blatantly as the KKK, (that's because he's a chicken chit) but still his beliefs and his agenda are in his words. I don't agree with the KKK, but at least they have the gonads to wave their colors when they express their opinions - even if they do hide behind sheets, and many don't wear those any more so at least you can identify who the racists are.
Rush has every right to say what he believes, state his opinion, and be a racist and promote his racist agenda - how ever subtle and insiduously he promotes it - using select PC code words so he can wiggle out from being labeled as ... oh my gosh.. a racist.
He has been doing this for over 20 years - and he has been quite successful at it - and has developed a large "ditto head" following. Good for him and his mindless jelly heads who couldn't congel an independent thought if they tried.
There's no law against being a racist or to following a racist and believe in the sewage which pours from his mouth.
Jessie Jackson, Al Starpton, Louis Farikan (sp?), many more are all racists. They too can say whatever they want, and they do.
Yes Rush can exercise his freedom of speach. He can say whatever he wants... but he doesn't have freedom to be employed where ever he wants and if ESPN doesn't want this kind of "chit" on their network... he's out of a job.
Just don't discriminate because that's against the law.
Racism is like sewage... it's a fact of life, it's with each and every one of us ever day. However, most people don't want it in their living room or in their ears.
It's time for Rush to go.
Be curious to see if Mr. Moral Anti-drug tough-on-criminals will serve any jail time if these drug charges prove to be true. I'm sure he'll ask for rehab and avoid prision like all rich white collar criminals manage to do.
Well I've said enough... I'll post the link with facts about how conservative the media really is.... and how much of a farse this "Librals, Librals, Librals... in the media media media" rant is.
let's keep the people believing that their's librals trying to undermind our constitution - that'll keep the "Rightegous" people in power.

Is it because they didn't need the lefties to become succesful. The hatred heeped upon black conservatives by our leftist friends is proof of where in America the bigots and racists reside and that is left of center!

One misspoken, poorly worded, or bad judgement statement doesn't make a person a racist.
It's a pattern of statements and it's the belief behind those statements which causes that person to continue to say racist comments that makes a person a racist.
That's where Rush comes from and he has a large volume of words - recorded on tape, on TV, and in print which back up his beliefs and his agenda. There's no doubt who he is and what he is.
He did not misspeak and he stands by his comment - regardless of how racist it is.
Sure, he doesn't see it as racist, neither do the people who believe in him. They don't see the pattern and they think what they believe in as racist.
And yet there's so many other's - not just me- who see the racism.
Why is that?
Einstein said you can't solve a problem at the same intellectual level as the problem.
A racist can't see themselves as a racist, until they are willing to admit there is another point of view other than their own - and it just might be accurate.

He apologized 'cause he took a lot of heat over it. That doesn't mean his statement wasn't honest and believed by him even now.
Calling someone a racist because they see through the white wash that's been spread over America as they speak their mind doesn't make them one. It's one thing to succeed in suppressing outspoken honesty, it's another to succeed in suppressing thought. One doesn't automatically ensure the other, but it's a start.
-
Making a racial statement does not make you a racist. People say dumb things sometimes, especially during the heat of an argument. Do I think Rush should apologize because he is feeling the heat? No. But I do think he should apologize because it is the decent thing to do as a human being.

Rush isn't going anywhere...

This whole thing reminds of the time Roseanne Barr screeched out the National Anthem at a baseball game, then spat and grabbed her crotch. She was lambasted and justifiably so. Most people thought that the National Anthem was not the proper venue for comedy. And many thought she was being deliberately disrespectful, which she probably wasn't. People asked "what do you expect when you ask a comedienne to sing the national anthem?" But she suffered for it and she deserved to, that's a risk you take when you make your living by entertaining millions, and you blow it.
Rush brought race into a discussion where most people just don't want it. The merits of what he said about the media don't matter, pro football as entertainment is a place where people leave those issues behind. He should have left that kind of opinion for his talk show, and stuck to football for the ESPN show. Now people ask "what do you expect when you ask a political talkshow host to give his opinions about football?" He blew it, and he deserves what he got.

It's a scary thing really. I find myself in agreement with Ra.
Right, wrong, whatever... it doesn't really matter. Rush had every right to say what he did, but he probably needs to consider his audience. ESPN is watched by a far more diverse crowd than just the typical "ditto head".

I see a pretty even 50/50 split in this thread and the people posting here certainly represent all walks of life. The only people I see condemning Rush's comments are TV and radio personalities and I see the primary motivation for their statements is to avoid being the next target.

And some how they get away with calling everyone who does not agree with them "librals" and some how labeling the media as libral when the majority of the media is espousing a conservative point of view. Sounds so much who the Nazi's came to power in Germany in the 1930s.
The sports writers are promoting black QBs over white QBs is a white wash.
Sadam Hussein has WMD and he is about to use them on the US so we need to go to war - that was a big white wash.
Taking a surplus and turning it into the largest deficeit and still giving the rich tax breaks - that's a white wash.
Are most CEOs and business executives white - yes.
Are most land owners white - yes.
Are most NFL owners white - yes
Are most NBA owners white - yes
Are most rich people in America white - Yes.
Are minorities the faster growing population - yes.
Will whites in the next 50 years become the minority - yes.
Was there ever overt racism in America - yes.
How long ago was that? A little less than 30 years ago - not even a life time away.
Is there still overt racism in America - yes.
Yes I can see the white wash over America.
>>It's one thing to succeed in suppressing outspoken honesty, it's another to succeed in suppressing thought.
Is Rush going to jail for what he said? No.
Are Rush's words being ommitted from public debate - No.
Is Rush becoming an Un-person - no.
Is Rush still able to go on his talk radio and sprew his nazi right wing zealous crap - yes.
There's been no stiffling of free speach - Rush spoke his mind and he got spoken back too.
That's sounds like American freedom to me!

That's the funny part. He's always made accusations that the major media organs had a leftist slant. Well guess what, Disney/ABC/ESPN just proved him 100% correct. I wonder if this whole job wasn't just a fishing expidition for El Rushbo?

IIRC, his radio show is part of Clear Channel.

Its kind of hard to say "no" to any of the above when caucasian americans (I'm offended by being called white, do I look like a piece of paper to you? Do I blind you when the sun reflects off my tanned skin? If anything, I am more of a tan) are the majority in the US anyway.

Interesting... so when Caucasian Americans are no longer the majority, who will be the majority? Certainly not minorities since they will no longer be the minorities. Will there be more Asian Americans than Caucasian Americans? African americans than Caucasian Americans? Spaniish Americans? Who exactly will become the majority? How does this then make whites the minority? I don't see how all current minorities will breed like rabbits and each individual group of people will outnumber Caucasian Americans.
If this happens, the US will quickly run out of room and be unable to support itself. I better start practicing on what will become the dominant language in 50 years: El US es flusho downo the draino senor.
Cracka please!

I doubt you are, and I'm sure you'll live.
>> who will be the majority?
According to the census bureau, hispanics will be the majority with in 50 years.
Then the referendoms on California ballots will be whether or not to keep English as a second language on road signs and government literature.
Hola! Oblate Espanel?

I read that Hispanics will be the majority some time ago, hence my blurb at the end. ;)
Unfortunately, yo no hablo espanol. (http://smilies.networkessence.net/s/contrib/edoom/sad2.gif)

Just a few thoughts, in brief, about the Rush incident.
Did he have the right to say what he did?
Absolutely.
Should he have said it?
Probably not.
On the other hand, do we have an obligation to speak out about issues of this nature?
I would like to think so.
Is it possible to have a rational discussion about such an issue?
Are you kidding!? Rational discourse started going the way of the dinosaur in the 1960s. So sure have we become of our own intellectual and moral superiority that we are no longer willing to give the opposition's arguments a fair assessment.
The trial of John Peter Zenger in the early 1600s reinforced the right of Americans to say whatever they wanted, as long as it was true. That should be the litmus test for the type of statements made in this incidence. If discussion of discrimination in the hiring of coaches and managers is considered to be a reasonable topic, then why not a discussion that approaches the issue from the opposite direction?
Perhaps he should have known better. Most of us, even if we had believed as he did, would not have given voice to such a belief in front of a microphone. We would have known full well the fury that it would unleash.
But that may be the central issue here. Is it really in our best interests as a nation and a people to permanently quell all negative speech?
Definitely not.
Regards, Shuckins

Tocqueville recognized this about America 150 years ago. Some things never change.

If one can stomache the assumption that a QB that has gone to the NFC championship game 2 years in a row and finished 2nd in MVP voting can ever be considered overrated...I'm surprised that no one else on this board thought it odd that the NFL is just about the worst possible workplace in America to attempt to make a point on Affirmative Action.
There is no purer meritocracy than professional sports. Rush gives people in his profession too much credit. Black, White, Purple, if you're good you play. No one really gives a crap what the media thinks about who you start. The NFL is about 2 things, winning and money.
Now folks can cry about media bias, but bottom line is Rush absolutely picked the wrong workplace model to hang his agenda on and got clubbed like a seal pup for it. That's the market at work folks, the dweebs are supposed to be sent home with the pink slips.

Rush brought race into a discussion where most people just don't want it. The merits of what he said about the media don't matter, pro football as entertainment is a place where people leave those issues behind. He should have left that kind of opinion for his talk show, and stuck to football for the ESPN show. Now people ask "what do you expect when you ask a political talkshow host to give his opinions about football?" He blew it, and he deserves what he got.
hot damn! I agree with Ra. I didnt think that would ever happen. Maybe I was wrong about you- pretty cogent analysis and no spin. THis is the same conclusion that I came to.

I agree too, still, can't blame Rush for doing what he does. Wonder what ESPN was thinking when they hired him?
