Double click the little speaker icon in the taskbar and see if you have the midi muted or turned way down. If thats not it go to sounds in control panal and make sure it enabled. If you have onboard sound on your mobo it could also be disabled in bios setup.

You need to ensure a midi driver is installed.  Most sound cards install 'Microsoft GS WaveTable SW Synth' along with the regular drivers. (Inc SB).

My Machine uses 'Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth' if you look under audio settings in your control panel you should see this listed under 'midi playback', if not go get the latest driver package for your soundcard and re-install it.

Before you do all that check what zmeg said first:)

Also be sure you do not have the midi output set to your cards out port.
I use a Roland Midi tone generator for my midi files so it is set
to the midi out....

Does that Roland midi driver come with a particular soundcard or can it be downloaded?  I have a roland synth and I suspect I'd get better performance from using that rather than the default MS midi driver.

Thanks,

Neg. it uses the windows default midi driver  and connects with a midi interface cable thru the joystick port. all of the tones sounds and such are within the external midi device..
