TAMPA - The teenage son of Dwight Gooden, the former Major League Baseball pitcher who now works in the front office of the New York Yankees in Tampa, was arrested Wednesday, accused of selling $200 worth of crack cocaine to undercover deputies, authorities said.
Dwight Eugene Gooden Jr., 17, of Tampa was arrested shortly before 6 p.m. on East Hillsborough Avenue near North 32nd Street, Hillsborough County sheriff's Lt. Rod Reder said. Gooden was charged with possession and delivery of crack cocaine in connection with a sting operation conducted at the location Sept. 25, Reder said.
Undercover deputies targeted the area, which is in the city limits, because it is a known spot for drugs and prostitution, Reder said.
The deputies purchased 2.4 grams of crack cocaine from Gooden and another teen, Reder said. Kendon Rashid Davis, 19, of 3203 E. Jean St., was charged with three counts of possession of cocaine and one count of possession with intent to deliver. Records show Davis was released from jail Thursday morning after posting $19,000 bail.
Gooden was taken to the juvenile detention center, Reder said.
His father's sometimes-stellar baseball career, which was tainted by substance abuse including suspensions for drug use, began when he was drafted by the New York Mets in 1982. The elder Gooden, who grew up in Tampa, also played for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, the Cleveland Indians and the New York Yankees.
He was part of two World Series championship teams - in 1986 with the Mets and in 1996 with the Yankees. He retired in 2001.
