(warning creamo! random pointless survey seeking useless information)
most people have their prefered planes which they enjoy most yet for each person this set of planes or single aircraft is different.
the reasons for flying certain planes are equally varied from challenge, looks, performance, etc.
what are your planes and why do you choose to fly them?
-
I like British and Japanese aircraft.
Looking over my stats though, I fly a pretty good mix of aircraft, nobody gets left out.
Basically I just grab whatever a feel like at a given moment.

P-47
It's big and sexy.
It's got 8 x .50 Cals as a guns set, my favourite.
It suites my flying style.
It is very challenging to fly in AH compared with the late war planeset we have here.
It's not common. I like flying something different.

Spit IX with 50's
Handles well at High and low Alts, not bad as an attack fighter, and one of the better choices of a fighter from the selection we have IMO. Just have to be sure of your shots before you take them because of the small ammo load. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
-
Lancaster (rather than the B-17)...why go so far with half the load?
Arado...when its positively gotta get there, with attitude! (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

I think strategically first, then fly the aircraft that the job calls for. When in "Fun" mode, I load one of 35 variety missions for the troops, ranging from "Japanese Jabo" missions to "British Bullocks" missions...."Boys...just wanna have fun."
-
I usually fly the DHog. I like her because she's blue and beautiful! Just gotta love those gull wings! She's got a good mix of armament, speed and manueverability (did I spell that right?)
Ok ok ok... So my favorite show when I was a kid was The Black Sheep Squadron! So I went to bed every night as a kid staring up at models of a F4U shooting down a Zero. The Zero was suspended from the ceiling by it's tail, with cotton balls up the wire for smoke. I was just brought up liking the Corsair! (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/tongue.gif)
-
In AW:
(fighter) F4U was a real challenge to fly and I had always liked the plane
(dive bomber) VAL was a great platform and able to fight well after a drop
(torpedo) KATE was a very tough bird in AW
(bomber - Axis) JU88 could outrun most interceptors in a dive and capable of holding it's own when cornered...great for killing Westy
(bomber -Allied) B-17 for hvy raids, Invader for ground support
Worst experiences in AW were in the Betty (they all died) and the Jug (compressed on me when I just looked out the canopy).
In AH (granted, this is only my second tour):
(fighter) F4U-D feels very much like the AW Hog and suits my flying style.
I like the feel of the Jug in AH, but I will have to work more on E-management to use it effectively.
I would like to get some time in with the JU88 again (just to kill Westy with).

I like to fly 'em all at some time or another.
Jugs are about my favorite 'fun' ride, although I often don't have much more success with its 8 guns than I do with the 202, which is my favorite 'turny' ride. Tiffies are about my favorite if I really want to kill something, it's guns are great, and it's fast enough to press an attack. Strangely, I haven't found myself using 190s very often, I'm gonna have to start flying them for that very reason.
I like 109G2s and F4u-1ds just for the yellow noses (even though the F4 *is* blue), and I wish we had a yellow nosed Jug, too. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
The plane I'd most like to be flying is the P-40.
If there's a scenario, or I'm reading a good book about a particular aircraft or area of the war, then that'll almost certainly decide what I fly most of the time.

I've already applied to the 332nd Flying Mongrels! Thanks for the offer though!

On an interesting side note in this. A guy I worked with for my Design Project was a backseater in an F/A 18 with the VFMA-332 Moonlighters. He's now an RIO instructor at NAS Pensacola, though he's getting out in a week or so to go civilian! He got a real kick out of the squadrons emulating historical Marine squads. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) Just thought I'd share that with you! Hmm, wonder what he's gonna think when I tell him I'm joining the 332nd??? I try to vary the aircraft I fly regularly. I have favorites, Jug, Pony, Dora, and Franz, but I always do my best not to get too focused. This is mainly due to my RL job (Military)...I never know when I might be offline for very extended periods of time, and I would like to "get to know them all". Eventually I'll have some stability lol, then I'll focus.

I like the US planes just because that's what I've always been exposed to. Black Sheep Squadron... That awesome P-51 bombing scene in Empire of the Sun.... the model of a tiger-toothed P-40 I made so long ago.
So.. my first love is the P-40 just because that's the plane I loved first. I'll fly it forever as soon as its released.

Fw 190A !
Because it is German, because it is Fw, because it is 190 and because it is an A.
-
I fly several different planes based on need, but do gravitate to the Dhog and La-7. I use the Hog because it has a huge ammo load, and carried a nice Jabo loadout as well. While its not the best plane in a fight, it does many things well, and if flown correctly, can be a real beach.
The La-7 on the other hand is a Ferrari under 15k. The damned thing turns on a dime, accelerates in a dive like a P47, and has a top end that makes Stang drivers shudder in fear. You take all that and then add in that it can turn with a spit and has a reasonable cannon load....BWAHAHHA
(http://web.tampabay.rr.com/strategy/YAK9.gif)
[This message has been edited by 2Late4U (edited 05-17-2001).]
-
2Late4u - the La-7, like the La-5, will not win a turnfight with a spit at ANY altitude.
But I like it all the same. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
I don't know why I started flying the La-5 - I think it is the speed and acceleration I liked.
When the La-7 came out, I flew that instead. I like nippy planes I guess. The cannons are great at close range, and snapshots are not that difficult. But I think flying the Lavochkins teaches you good gunnery skills - I was really surprised how much I'd improved in that department after flying the La-5/7 for a few months. .50s seem much easier to hit with now. Same goes for hispanos.
I fly the Typhoon for jabo. I've always loved that plane. Big, powerful and tough - it makes a great jabo plane, although fighting air-to-air has always been hard for me.
-
I prefer to fly the F4U-1D, but I may have to pick another ride as an alternative sometimes because of all the late war planes being flown lately. I like the 1D because it is a pretty decent BnZ plane, but can still hold it's own with a number of aircraft if you really feel the need to turn with it. The 6 .50s have always been more than enough to do what I've wanted. Big Blue rules!

so far the "B" pony provides for the best cookouts...but they all seem to burn quite nicely (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)....actually yak is still the most fun you can have for a $ a day
-
Spitfire, either varient because theyre so sexy, its our squads historical mount and RAF pilots were more manly and had superior skills.
The P38...just cause i dont know why. I like my startup sound for it (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
If I have to fly LW I like the 190A5. Again dont know why I just do.
-
I usually fly delta, athough Southwestern is pretty reasonable these days.
-
After spendng awhile flying the Kitty, Hog and Turkey, I spent 2 tours flying the Dora almost exclusively. Now, I decided to give the D-9 a rest.
Currently, I am loving the two Yaks, though I do occasionally take the La-7 out for a spin or two. I am starting to really enjoy the Yak-9t. Small plane, handles well, goes fairly fast. Oh yeah, it has a BIG gun too.

Strange how AH has changed my mind over which plane i like the most.
Ever since i was a kid like you guys i had the models of spits, stukas and he111's etc on thread hanging from my ceiling and my favourite was always the me109 probably the E thinking back to the yellow nosed model i loved (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
But since flying in AH the 190a8 just made me fall in love with it.Such a fantastic allround aircraft.Great bomber hunter, great jabo and a mean killer in air to air fighting.Ive bought books on it and it really has become a passion.
Then came the dora (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) what a fantastic plane, i used to dislike the longnose but after flying it in AH i cant help but love it (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
my favourites?
1) FW190A8
2) FW190D9
3) Swordfish (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) i know its old but its beautifull

Like Dowding, I like the La5/La7. They are quick little airframes and since I usually screw up and find myself down low, they keep me outta trouble for the most part due to the acceleration and low alt speed. Just don't try turning with a spit, lol.
My gunnery has improved tremendously since I have flown these aircraft. The last 4 tours if I'm not mistaken. You have to get close and turning off tracers for 3 tours has helped as well. My k/d has actually doubled.

109G6/R6 ( with gondola cannon )
Because it IS so Uber (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) It's capabilities, in general, are highly underestimated by 90% of the cons you run into.
It is a very small target ( compared to a Jug or a Lightning anyway ) it handles well at low speed, climbs like a monkey on crack, with rudder assistance, it will roll quite fast too, and those 3x20 mg151 suprise a lot of guys who want to force a HO.
When the cannon run outta ammo, the 500 13mm rounds are plenty to defend yourself with while on RTB, so long as you get in close before firing.
All in all, a beautiful aircraft. Gustav, the universal soldier.

190A8, because it packs a great punch, generally tends to be flown seldomly and look mean.
A5 for much the same reason, except i feel as if I'm in a light plane (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif).
G2 to surprise Spits and N1K's.
G10 because it's a mean looking mofo with a HUGE engine. And because of the angles one can go for in the G10, 1*20mm+2*13mm tend to do pretty good damage
190F8 because it's just beautiful.

The Pony. The one 'n only...
It's (to me anyway) the ultimate symbol of Classic American Air Power.. big, sexy; proud and flashy in her 'come get some' nakedness, she made mediocre pilots dangerous, good pilots aces, and great pilots converts. With perfect lines; she was oh-so-fast and sleek and had a throaty howl all her own.. she turned heads; she made a lasting impression on all she touched. She was universally feared and hated by our adversary's and envied by our allies. The epitome of the classic prop fighter was the P51...
A hundred years from now, when some dusty academic discusses American Air Power and WWII the image displayed will not be of a Jug or a P38 or a Hawg... it'll be a brace of Pony's riding herd on a formation of B17's.
The P51's very presence speaks of Victory... for the Pony's all about what we could do, would do and finally did...
WIN!

F4U-1D
ItÄs got every good trait a fighter A/C should have:
Fast
Manouverable at high and slow speeds
excellent roll rate
Excellent vertical capabilities
decent climb
excellent visibility
durable
good range
good punch
this is IMO the most versatile (sp?) A/C in AH!

Im a LW guy right to the bone,it`s a obsessesion, maybe I wouldt fly better in other planes, but it just wouldn`t feel right,I guess it`s my previously life as LW
pilot;I got shot down 44`and was reborn 64`
But the 190 is definitely my plane,,and all the german planes got that killingmaschine- look
-
I fly Pony because is fast and challenging.
I fly 205 because is more challenging, cause is the best looking plane in AH and of course, 'cause is ITALIAN (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
-
I fly most, except for the dweeb mount of the day since I prefer to challenge myself. (Which means I take a chute home more often than I prefer, since I've not specialized in any one kite).
-British/RCAF because I'm Canadian
-US because they make cool looking planes
-109/190's because they look dangerous
-Zeke just because it's fun, darn it (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
Cheers
-
For the better part of my time here I flew the pony exclusively for much the same reasons as Hang, I've just allways loved that plane.
Lately though maybe it was the case of lookin for something different and challenging, or maybe it was playing for the knights for so long wore down my resolve and I picked up the iron cross and started flying German Iron. Been flying the 109F4 for about a month now and loving it.

La7, its a Shark!
I don't try to swim with the school of spits/niki's, just make slashing attacks in & out, take shots at whatever gets in front of you.
It suits my style, gets me out of WAY more scrapes than it should. Has decent guns once you learn them. (Still flying with the 2 ShVaks here)
It's also slowly teaching me to be a much better E fighter overall.
-
P-47D-25, think god for it as the 38 was driving me insane here. It treats me right. All it does is smash and slash, like some pissed off warthog with a serious bad attitude. Man, it just fits me and I understand it.
When I get the urge I hop in my 38 and I gotta admit the 47 helps with 38 flying...but I'm a 47 convert in AH.... niceeeeeee pigggy.

I use the ShVak's as well. I can't hit the proverbial barn with the B20's and I have yet to figure that one out.

I fly quite a few different planes...
P-38. Because I love that plane. It's beautiful. And because the feeling when you shoot someone down with it is really good.
Hellcat. Handles nicely, except for a weird snap stall. It has six machine guns. It dives like a bat out of hell. And it's big, almost as big as some dive bombers. And it's BLUE :-D.
Spit IX. Cause she's pretty, and she's nice to me when I fly her. It's always disappointing to die in one though.
Zero. Because it's so much FUN! And because I don't get that obscure sense of guilt that comes from the Spit, since I know that if I get hit by so much as a lugie, she's gonna blow up.
Yak9U. She's fast, she's fun, and most of what she can't outrun, she can turn with. Not the La7 though. Also, she improves my aim.
Recently, I've been trying to get into flying the Pony a bit, which is hard, and now the F4U-1D, which seems like a sweet plane so far.

I fly the Jug, mostly the P-47-25. I really like the plane. I have always liked it. Since I was a kid (Loooooong time ago).
I grew up in Brasil so that is one reason I like the -25 over the -30 but I have also found that it seems to handle better for me also. Feels a bit lighter and seems to turn a bit better.
I don't do that well in it, but then I don't do that well in anything (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif).
I am a fairly large person ( 235 lbs, 6'2") and the Jug is a big plane. I guess I feel I could fit in a real one which is another attraction.

I fly La7 with the 3 cannon option. Gotta get within D400 and dead 6 to kill with any certainty, though you can get the occasional good snapshot with them.
I guess I just love the look of the La7, all menacing with the mottled camo scheme. I also fly the P51D and Typh. P51 cause it's sleek and sexy and the Typh because it's fast and a brute.
-
I fly the Tiffie... everything is just another target.
-
Well, When i was flying regularly, and not out at sea, I flew whatever tickled my fancy that day, or, if i had a specific goal in mind, i'd pick a plane that did that job well. And of course when my squadies was on, i'd generally fly whatever they were flying, makes winging up easier that way.
Being that i am in the Navy, and grew up watching Black Sheep Squadron like some of the others around here, i've always had a soft spot in my heart for The Corsair, And almost all Navy planes in general. There's just something beautiful about that BLUE. Besides, while Hang's Pony may be sleek, and beautiful, but the Hawg just plain looks Mean, and Powerful. I can't wait till i can actively fly again, and can do some Pac-scenarios. (and maybe in my wishlist of versions to come, maybe HT will feel like modeling an F8F-1 Bearcat)

I started out in tour 11 in the CHog. Good newbie plane. Changed to -1D in tour 14. The Hog is just so mean looking.
Then last tour I fell in love with the P-51D. Flew some sorties and got 28/2 K/D in it in 3 days. Never flown it before. Flown it ever since. It can deal with anything if handled right. Only planes I get into trouble with are the Yak and the LA7. I also like to chat while I climb to my combat alt of 28000 feet. Not much above that around. I also love to fly in groups of P-51s, it just looks sooooo cool. Check my sig card (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
