Ok, I downloaded the game and it just doesn't work.
Ok, let me clarify that. It runs but I can't seem to do anything. Why can't I calibrate my joystick, it keeps defaulting to my mouse and I'm NOT flying by mouse.
Also, I can't "chat". Do you have to press something special to start chatting? I don't mean the voice mod, I don't even want to think about that at the moment.
Any help on this would be appreciated...:(

Welcome Dinky.  

The first place to go is http://www.hitechcreations.com/helphom.html

That's the HTC help page.  Download the help file, and read some of the "getting started" tutorials.  I think most of your questions will be answered there.  

Also, netaces.org is a great site for help (a little more advanced, introduces many gameplay concepts).  Once you've figured out how to start your airplane and get it rolling, go there to learn more.  

The training arena is the best place to go for help once you have some of the basics (joystick calibration, etc) set up.  

It takes time to learn this game, but once you do, it's well worth it.  Feel free to ask any more questions here, as well. :)

Ok,
how do I switch from mouse to joystick. As far as I can tell, it's not covered in the help file. Not that I can find anyway.
Also, how do I chat? Nothing in the help file about that either...

To select a joystick:

Press ESC to bring up your clipboard.  Click setup.  Click Joystick.  Click "select joystick" button.  Select your joystick instead of the mouse.  You may have to map the axis individually, depending on your joystick.

Ok, Tarmac got you started on selecting your joystick, then go Elementary Joystick Setup (http://www.geocities.com/wulf1177/stick_sets.html) and set up the hat and some usefull buttons.

Be sure to read the Hitech help file on adjusting head position and saving views.

hit  /  to chat. there are 4 different channels. green is your country, gray everyone can hear, red squad, purple is range. you can hit these by shift+/  ctrl+/ alt+/  . just don't announce where you are going on the gray channel for starters. that may end up in your death :(
