Is there room for "hate" in a modern day sim?
If there is, will it be a "relaxed hate"?
Where sparring parties limp wristedly toss
light barbs at each other and then trip
over thier own feet to be the first to offer
apologies and make amends?
OR? <pregnant pause> .....
Will there be a tangable and "REAL hate"? Mano-e-mano stuff? You know! The loud <crack>
of an open palm slap on the face type of duel
challange?
Will we have squads hunting individuals?
OR better yet!! Individuals, hunting squads?
Mmmmmm. Or have we "maA toored" ???

I prefer the online MU* sort of hate which generally keeps it InCharacter(IC), not OutOfCharacter(OOC). Unfortunately, there is a lot of nationalistic feeling in WWII flight sims, since it is based, after all, on real life history. I have been as guilty as the next. Still, I think I'm going to make a greater effort and keep the line drawn between this sim, AH, and present day reality. Life's too short as it is.
------------------
Polk./16GIAP
-
Bah...nationalistic my ass...
I hate everyone equally....without hate in an online flightsim...you've got nothing but a horde of polite pilots saying "excuse me...didn't mean to shoot you...I was aiming at the ground...I'm sorry"
Hate is not only one of the most important aspects of an online community...it's also a valuable weapon in the flightsim environment. Getting some Seal so riled up that he can't see the gunsight through all the spit on his monitor can be extremely advantageous. People that can't handle the comments flying over the text buffer should probably stick to something more their speed...like Monopoly..oh wait...that's a hate filled game as well. Solitaire...oh no...that just makes you hate the computer...ah hell...does Barney make a game?
Funny how the most hated people in an online flightsim always end up being the best pilots...as well as the most remembered...and eventually end up being the most repected...eh?
Damn...did I just type all this garbage?

Howdy DD,
Yeah, I've recently tried AW and WB again and I was very dissapointed with the general lack of hate. I feel that this is a direct result of Nancy Reagan's "Just Say No" brain washing campaign. Rather than trying to convert some of the already braindead, politically correct, sheep that play those other inferior flight sims, I thought it would be easier to start here. I think I'm off to a good start... I can already smell death and destruction in the air!
I am hoping that I can build up a level of hate strong enough so that I can summon my mentor and squad leader DoKtor GonZo. I have several sheep to sacrifice tonight in order to begin the summoning ritual.

Oh yes the ole DoK. I'm affraid he has gone rather soft. It seems the TopGuns<Best Sim Squad EVER!!> got the better of him. Oh, one more thing, you boys in here better git some asbestos undies, dont want yer panties to catch fire.

My current job involves going to Automotive Assembly Plants where the plant for some reason or another is inoperative. (Usually do to management incompetence.)
Generally when I arrive at the plant, the aforementioned incompetents come flying down from their perches, saliva spewing forth, like maniacs.
They start screaming and hollering in an attempt to intimidate me.
I stand there quietly, often look bored, and check my watch.
This aggrivates them further.
I find it all very amusing.
Please hurl your insults and taunts via the internet my direction, I reccomend you do this in the off topic "O-Club" Forum though.
I will rate them for originality and score them on a scale from 1 to 10 with 10th divisions.
I have often wanted to do this when some plant manager was worked up in a frenzy.
I will not bother with anything I deem below a four.
Have a nice day.

Maybe start threads about peace, love, and Chilvarous flying?
Or Good (Polite) Pilot/Evil Pilot sim feature threads, Like the Oh, lets kill folks in Chutes thread, and someone does the HT/Pyro there should be a feature where defenseless individuals in Chutes should be protected threads?
Maybe you guys can do a lively one, but I think they are fisseling out.

Don't know exactly why I feel the need to post on this thread, or the other rude one either for that matter.
Addmitedly the fact I find them rude is a personal opinion and one that evidently is not shared by everyone. I am not singling out anyone in particular nor do I wish to flame anyone, but perhaps get an insite into what it is that attracts the desire to be rude.
I have often wondered if this sort of posting or behavior in person may be an underlying reason for so many of the hate crimes such as shootings in schools and churches.
I have noticed a current trend among many young people, I am 53 for reference, those in their teens or early and mid twenties, to use insults in greetings and general comunication. I don't understand it, it baffles me. This is not to say I have never been rude to anyone, I have, and even though it felt right at the time on further reflection on the event it left me feeling a bit less of a person.
One of the things that drew me to flying online sims was the camaraderie I felt with other human beings of similar interests. Also the opportunity to be able to comunicate with the world as a whole. If this kind of comunication had been of the type that I have read in this thread and the other one about chutes, I don't think I would still be here. I would have found something else to do.
I don't see anything in any of the posts that could be honestly viewed as "machismo". Most of it appears to me as the ramblings of juveniles though I understand that most involved are legaly adults.
I use my real name here and for a call sign because I never felt the need for an alter ego. I am who I seem to be, or as much of that as can be determined by my comunications.
If "hate" posts or mail is your thing, why not suscribe to a BB that caters to that very thing? Why does it have to be a part of a great "game" or simulation?
Enlighten me, please...

I suppose that I don't find humor in rudeness. Actually, I abhore it. I rarely tolerate it in my presence. You are, of course entitled to whatever brand of "humor" you wish to use. Humerless I am not, I'm well liked and highly thought of in the circles I frequent. Too serious? Would I be engaging my time in a flight sim online flying make believe airplanes if I were too serious?
I suppose this is for naught. I don't need valium, have learned to deal with those things I can't change for a long time now and I just need to add you to the list. I was looking for an answer and I think I came to the wrong place to find it.

Well Mark.
I don't know what to tell you.
I know that I find people being over sensitive more problematic than folks being rude.
I live in Michigan, and your likely to get Attitude from the people behind the counter when you order from McDonalds. Customer Service is a thing of the past.
I guess I am used to rudeness, and therefore better able to handle it. Folks who start acting offended, well, that annoys me.
As to the "Chute" thread, well pilots shot other pilots in their chutes. Men got tired of seeing their friends killed, so they let their emotions get the best of them and shot defensless men in their parachutes. Some idiots in Parachutes shot at the men on the ground. (I know from first person experience that it is hard to shoot at things from a parachute.) And people on the ground stand a better chance of shooting people descending in parachutes.
Now,
As to the mispent youth of today (I'm 35) cussing at and insulting each other.
Well I think it is along the lines of, demonstrating your Chutzpah. If you get upset, and easily offended, people will take that as a sign of weakness, and the vultures in todays society will take advantage of that. So to show how desensitized and thick skinned we started trading insults.
I don't know if it was this thread, or another, where I said that you could insult me all you wanted, and I would only respond to those I deemed above a Four. Well I would never deem any of them above a four, but if someone posted something that isn't as stale as two year old saltine crackers, you can bet I would plagurize it.
Trading insults, and having people insult me, is not gonna send me to my local elementary school with an AK-47. I think most of the types that do that are the "Over Sensitive Type's" who take this all too serously.
Just saying "NO" to rudeness doesn't work.
And allowing your (metaphorically speaking, not you personally) feelings to be hurt by "Text" displayed on a "Computer" screen has got to show a problem with your self confidence.
I have often posted threads that I thought were very Benign, and have seen them turn into flame wars. I read what I have written and try time and time again to understand how someone could have gotten offended by it. Invariably someone has.
Some people like white bread, some like whole wheat, and someone out there is willing to kill to advance white bread.
It's silly, but those are the facts of life.
Are Cartoons, Video Games, and Porno to blame with everything that is wrong in the world. NO.
A lack of personal responsibility is.
You hold yourself responsible and choose not to act rudely, or post messages that would offend people. Sorry, if you express your opinion you are gonna offend someone.
Brat, vermillion, and the others are stating right up front, I don't care who I offend, if you don't like it, don't read my posts.
People always have the choice to not be offended.

Downtown,
Good post, well thought out and to the point and explanatory of the things I posted about. I live in Texas and rudeness is not a "normal" thing. I didn't get my feelings hurt, and dont really think I will loose any sleep over it. I just don't understand the need for it in a "friendly" group, what I have associated with flight and driving sims.
In Texas, at least in Ft. Worth, if you go to McDonalds, you generally get, along with a smile, curteous and prompt service. This is typical even of the smallest most rundown little resturaunts in the area. It applies too to the general way people treat each other here, they are friendly.
This is not to say that there is not any rudeness apparant in certain groups or types of people, generally the gangs are not known for being particularly curteous or even friendly. Then again, I don't make it a point to associate with them. We have nothing in common. Is this indicative of a lack of self esteem or confidence? Don't think so. Seems more like common sense to me. Why be uncomfortable with your suroundings and feel you have to prove yourself all the time?
I fly sims in general for fun and relaxation, to "loose" myself in the imagined history of the era. It is obvious to me not all people relax the same way, so this will be my last post on the matter. I only answered it because the time and thought you put into it deserved a response. Thanks again for the perspective done in an intelligent manner.

Hmmm, a lotta hate in here. I just hope what will be developed will be quality hate, and not just the kind typically used by whining Dweebs. There is a lot fo that going on over in AW these days. Tell you what, Mark: I won't play pop psychologist (for long) but I'll try to offer some insight.
It's wrapped up in the question: how much combat flying time have you had in real life? I submit that when your profession is trying to turn another human being into an expanding cloud of hair, teeth and eyeballs before they can do it to you, one gets a certain (shall we say) "Hateful" attitude about the whole thing. Combat flight sims are hardly the real thing, but a shadow of that attitude manifests here, too. Some of the stuff I've read (and, I admit, participated in) here is actually pretty tame when compared to the callous, chest-thumping attitude I've seen (and, I admit, participated in) in real ready rooms.
I'm 38, an educated and (normally) disgustingly polite professional flying nothing more dangerous than a desk these days, but when I "strap on" in a game where my goal is to spread your brains all over the perspex of your canopy it's pretty counterproductive (IMHO) for me to worry about your feelings. This (and other) BBS venues related to what we do in the game are going to reek with the same attitude.
I fly Red Baron a lot these days, and people are (sometimes disgustingly) polite there because the atmosphere is one of a pseudo-chivalry as glorified by the writers of the time. I'll tell you, though, that attitude really cheeses off some of the "real" pilots. I've mentioned my friend the former B-29 driver. In the War they never let an enemy chute go without trying to get the pilot, and they expected (and got) no differently from the enemy. Conventions aside, when you've seen people you know and like gunned down by an enemy pilot when they were hanging in a 'chute, you make damned sure none of them make it to try again if you can help it. In the game, sometimes people get upset when they blow all their ammo and then tell everyone so as though it's a free ticket out. As if. You might as well ask for mercy because you just blew your energy advantage in the middle of several angry nmes. It's a game, but it's a game about war, and your job is to make everyone dead who's not on your side. Making people dead is a Hateful occupation.
"Hate"ful things went on (and go on) every day in real war that never made it into print and which would shock and even disgust civilians if they learned of it. War is Hell. Try it, you'll Hate it. In the meantime, it's just the related spirit some people choose to bring into simulations of that Hell.
When I fly WW2, I purposely fly the Wuerger. I like to fly in fast, get really close, and blow you back to the Hell you came from with big guns that make big holes, not dance some foo-foo stallfighting silliness that makes me think of ballet slippers on the pedals. Hate helps. It's not you, Mark-whatever that I Hate, it's the representation of you that has the effrontery to be flying an aircraft of the Hated Enema that's uglying up my sky. If you put too much of your own, personal self into that cockpit, all kidding aside, I submit you might be doing your ego some damage.
In the end, in the sim, it's all in fun and we can go back to our desks and Hate the boss, instead (unless you're one and the same, then you can Hate yourself).
Just my piddly $0.02, and damn the exchange rate.
