Title: Win2K & Win2KPro
Post by: Hajo on October 10, 2003, 10:37:26 AM
OK....here's the question.  PC has GeForce4Ti4600,  System is AthlonXP2400 running at 2gig, 512meg PC2700 DDR, ASUS A7V333 mobo.  Running Dx9b.

Just recently upgraded from Win98SE to Win2KPro, which is bases on the NTFS (NT File System)  Win2K I believe is running FAT32 file system.

GeForce Vid drivers....run Win2K driver with Win2KPro?  How can that be done with two different file systems?

Here's why I ask....installed a GeForceFX5200 vid card to try it, uninstalled my Ti4600 GF4.....was using the 41.80 drivers for the GF4 card.....the GeForceFx card used the 45.24s; installed from the CD with the FX card.  FX card has 256 meg of video memory.
By the way the Ti4600GF4 card delivers twice the FR as the 5200,
but the 5200 will work nicely in AH.

Anyway....uninstalled the 5200 and replaced it with the Ti4600, tried to install the 4180s again and I needed for some reason NT files from the driver disk....it explicitly asked for the NT files.  Luckily the GForceFX driver disk had the required NT files, and am now running the 29.42 drivers on the Ti4600, and running more stable, with FR a constant 85 then with the 4180 drivers.

So....I'm in a quandry here...vid card works fine...but Win2K, and win2Kpro different....which drivers does one use for Win2K pro?
When you go to guru3d etc. to upgrade driver....will the Win2K-XP drivers work?  Doesn't Win2KPro which is based on the NTFS need different driver then Win2K?

Sorry..for long inquiry...but an answer to this dilema would be appreciated!  :)

Hajo.  The Ti4600 video card is much more powerful than the 5200FX.  The 5200FX is a glorified GF3 card and not much faster than a GF2 Ultra.  Any of the GF4Ti4x00 video cards are much better than the 5200 or 5600 X cards.

WIth DX9.0b and the Ti4600, you should use either the 30.82 or 41.09 NVidia Detonator drivers.  Do not use the 45.xx or 50.xx drivers with this card and DX9.

Also, after installing the FX, when you want to change back to the 4600, you will need to reinstall DirectX and be sure to remove the FX drivers.  You'll need to use some type of third party cleaner for this as NVidia's remover does not acutally remove the drivers.

Do not be concerned about the file systems.  Win2K or Win2KPro can use the FAT32 filesystem.  The anomaly you are running into has to do with the new FX drivers.  They do some rather odd things to your system and DX files.

Thanks Skuzzy.....sticking with the 29.42 drivers...best and most stable I've seen yet....including the 30.82s...which I ran a short while back...will install Dx9b again!
