Title: E-mail a very depressed Veteran
Post by: Curval on October 13, 2003, 07:27:45 AM
Hi all,

Finally moved into the new house.

In doing so I have been in regular touch with Geoffrey Bird the Fleet Air Arm pilot who was the speaker at the 2003 con.

Geoffrey had left the island on September 4th, the day before Hurricane Fabian hit the island.

He returned a month later to an absolute disaster at his residence (the property I now own belonged to him but was an investment property...not his residence.)

His house faces south east and is right at the top of a large hill.  It was dominated by huge windows and large sliding glass doors to take advantage of the beautiful view.

Well...all of the windows and glass door blew in very early in the storm.  The inside of his house was subjected to about four hours of hurricane force winds and it destroyed everything of any value.

All of his war memorabilia, including a sword presented to him by HRH Queen Elizabeth is for all intents and purposes ruined.

To make matters worse the insurance company (he was very well insured) is starting to fight back on some of the claims.  They said for example that his carpets in the living room came out "great" and that they would not be replacing them...fact is that the cleaners stoppped half way through the job because there was so much glass in the carpets they were worried their equipment would be damaged.

He is so depressed.  Right now he isn't even the same person.  He is like a defeated man and is living amongst salt encrusted furniture pitted with broken glass.

If you guys get a chance could you fire him an e-mail to try and raise his spirits a bit?

E-mail address is:

ladybird@northrock.bm

Thanks.

Shame about the war memorabilia.  Carpeting and windows can be replaced, but memories and awards are irreplaceable.

But still, if he knew the 'cane was coming, why not take his valuables with him when he evacuated?

When I've figured out the proper words, I'll drop a line.

He went on a cruise for WW2 vets.  Given the sheer volume of stuff he had there was no way he could have taken it with him.  He didn't evacuate.

The choice was his to go or no..he chose to go.  His fault I guess, but hindsight is 20/20.  That decision was a bad one and one he regrets.

Curval,

I hope his home repairs go well and his scenic ocean view is restored pronto.  And... I hope you and he both realize that there are worse things that can happen than having to repair one of your homes.

Thanks guys.

MiniD...you are right of course, but I think it is the loss of all his war memorabilia that has him down in the dumps.

Emails are good.
Organizing a collect and sending him some very well deserved money is even better.
