Title: Terrain and terrain textures
Post by: MANDOBLE on May 18, 2001, 06:40:00 AM
IMO, the actual textures are too "granulated" or "grany" at any distance. The visual effect is very "extrange" and the image is not nitid. At medium and far distances, while moving, what I see is a set of very dark/dark/medium green pixels moving like a million of dark green painted irritated ants near their hole.

Here are some examples of what I mean:

 http://www.hitechcreations.com/images/shots/202.gif (http://www.hitechcreations.com/images/shots/202.gif)

The terrain is not very clear and mainly dark, even the sky at 12 o'clock is too dark.

Sorry, but I need to say this:
The texture effects in the terrain is the most ugly I've ever seen.

What kind of video card and resolution are you running? Do you use the high detail setting by hitting shift+F1 ? This can make a big difference. I don't think there is anything wrong with the way the game engine handles the textures. I think its just a function of the way current video cards handle textures. I do like some of the user created texture sets better though, particularly the ones that Nuttz does.

I have two gripes with textures. First: rivers usually end up running up the side of a cliff face just because water plates aren't handled too well. Second: we have semi-gloss terrain. I haven't seen light reflect off everything on the ground as it does here. We either had a week-long downpour or someone dumped a load of semi-gloss paint on the map.
