For the first time, the armed forces is advertising for pilots. The government this month launched a $4.3 million campaign to woo potential flyers into recruiting centres nationwide.
As well, the air force has relaxed its education standards, opening the hangar doors to 40 pilot trainees straight out of high school on the proviso they get a university degree during their time in the force.
If you've ever fancied flying a fighter jet faster than the speed of sound or piloting a chopper on a rescue mission over the stormy North Atlantic, now's your chance. The Help Wanted signs are hanging on all aircraft in the air force, from four-engine Hercules transports to Griffon helicopters.
"Never in recent history have people had such a good opportunity to become a pilot," said Lt.-Col. Donald Albert.
Albert oversees recruiting efforts for the air force. He's having a tough job. This year, the air force has 184 spaces for what it calls direct entry officers, candidates who already have a university degree. So far fewer than 40 have signed up.

Already rejected by them..but thanks for reminding me.;)
I have a scar on my left retina. They told me to forget about flying jets. I told them that as a result I would forget about joining.:)

Hmmmm... I wonder... Any Canadians know how to get into contact with a recruiter? Nevermind, found the website and sent in an application. What the hell, who knows...

think they are desperate enough to take a 43 year old !
-
Heheh... Too bad they don't take wavers for those of us that are colorblind.
Doh! I just pressed the green/red/brown button what does that do?

I'm hoping their desperate enough to take a US citizen.

Wulfe they are. They wont even make you giv up your citizenship. We have very few fighter planes (CF-18s) but they still can't fill the spots in training.
Curval was right though, you have to have PERFECT vision. THat is where most recruits get punted out.
On the up side anyone who gets accepted from the US gets treated to a free pint from me at 15 wing CFB Moose Jaw.
-
Last time I had my vision checked (2 years ago), the doc said "better than 20/20" <--- dunno if thats possible, or maybe he just wanted to make me feel good, but thats what he told me. I don't believe my vision has deteriorated since then (knock on wood). Also passed the colorblind test. Physical condition, good to great there... depending on who you compare me to.
Only problem would be the advanced mathematics area, I simply suck at calculus. Maybe suck isn't a good description, but think of being the absolute worst at something, and I am far below that when it comes to calculus.

Wulfe 32 degrees farenheit = what in celcius?

Welcome aboard wulfie. You passed the math test. Post at 15 wing and fly with the birds for 3 years (max)
-
This is a brilliant program to adress the shortfall of pilots for Canada's CF-18 fleet! By so drastically lowering recruiting standards they will simulataneusly increase the number of pilot candidates and decrease the number of planes through the resulting training crashes - effectivley attacking the imbalance from both ends.. Stunningly efficient! :D
-
Grun you are smarter than that. Look up the crash records in the CAF. We dont lose pilots often.

How are Canadian statistics for humor? ;)
-
I'm hoping I get accepted, I'm going to call the 1-800 number on the recruiting website either tommorrow or Friday to see if they recieved the online application.
Loser, Am I correct in assuming you are a pilot in the RCAF? If you are, any tips you can offer me? Any advice is appreciated.

No I am not, I just lived in Moose Jaw SK for 18 years. Really small town with a really big air base.
First tip: Don't call it the RCAF :)
It is just CAF ( Canadian Armed Forces) now.
-
I'll sign up right now if you guys will take back Celine Dion.
-
F that diablo.
-
Ah, I thought you may have been because of the free pint (assumed you meant on the base).
I'll try not to call it the RCAF anymore, one of those things I picked up from watching WWII movies... kind of like USAAF, now its just USAF, but I still call it USAAF.
:)

Thanks, but I don't think I'll make it.
To be eligible to apply to the Canadian Forces you must be a Canadian citizen.
I'll still call and see, but it doesn't look like it'll work out.

Giove it a couple weeks, they'll nix that one too... :)

WULFE;;;;;;
go NATO
-
Isn't NATO's military strength a portion of each member's already trained military?
I think the only jobs NATO actually has open are for civilians doing secretarial or managerial work.
I quickly found out that both the 1-800 number and the numbers for the majority of the recruiting offices near my side of the US were incorrect on the website and have since been changed. I got the number for the Toronto recruiting post after a few calls, I'm hoping they haven't updated their requirements on that page just like their phone numbers so maybe there's a chance I *may* be eligible. However, its between slim and none... and I think slim has left the building.
It was a nice thought to entertain for a couple of hours. Just like Faith No More's song "Epic", "Its in your face but you can't grab it".

I betchu anything I could fly an F-15 if they let me (with training of course).
:D
-
Yep Wulfe, your chances are probably less than slim to none.
You have to be a Canadian Citizen.
The medical standards for pilots are very high.
Education requirements are high (although they will put you through University).
I retired from the CAF in '95.
Wasn't a pilot, was a technician. I don't have perfect uncorrected vision, so didn't qualify.
Training is at a pretty high standard as well.
only 70% of recruits will make it through initial pilot training.
of that 70% another 20% will not make it to ,or through, advanced jet training.
Some will go Helicopter and some may go transport. However due to the fact that the Government has raped the military those who wash out of advanced jet training will most likely move on to some other career choice.
AS for the CF18, out of the original recruit class starting initial pilot training, probably less than 5% of them will ever fly a CF18.
Spent 10 years with that Jet. I still miss it (even though it is quite dated now).
So..yep they are actively recruiting, but the requirements haven't really changed from what they have always been. They are just advertising it now.
Cheers,
RTR

Hate to say this guys, but apparently it's not even the Canadian Armed Forces any more.
But just the CF, or Canadian Forces. Yep can't have "Armed" in there, people might think that the military is supposed to have weapons or something.
*sigh*
I know, I know...****ing Liberals.

Moose Jaw is the upside?!?!?! If so, can you imagine the downside? :D

It has been the Canadian Forces for quite some time, i.e., prior to Chretien and his crew. In any event, at least since 1992 or so.
Note that is is CFB Moose Jaw, not CAFB Moose Jaw = Canadian Forces Base not Canadian Armed Forces Base.
