hope it wasn't Chinese Astronaut.
-
Contrail who they trying to kid. Thats fire and smoke. If it was light on a contrail it would be uniform. Not a flaiming streak ending in a fireball.
-
The "sun reflecting off of the ice crystals of a high-altitude contrail" theory seems to be the most plausible If you look closely, you can see that the firey part of the cloud follows the exact same outline as the white part of the cloud.

Either that or we better send Bruce Willis' "Armagheddon" team up there, pronto! Quick, where's Steve Buscemi when we need him!

 That ain't no contrail, you can see in the second pic it apears to be tumbeling, the smoke trail ossicilates.
-
It's a black helicopter bursting into flames because it's antigravity unit malfunctioned. Don't tell anyone.
-
I was thinking it was the Auora buring up as it reentered after an assination attempt on AIral Sharon!
-
meteor.....
-
Yeah, it's definitely proof of something... I mean, you couldn't fake that in PhotoShop.
-
Looks like the astronauts on the ISS jettisoned some Taco Bell goodies...boy once that hits the atmosphere...whoa baby!

Its proof that something had a rough entry.
-
If you believe it really happened, that is.
My point is: you never really know these days.
-
Rocket launches in the early evening from Vandenberg look incredible. Long colorful streaks and snakelike clouds of bright color.
Or an acid flashback... ??

That's actually the first thing that came to my mind, minus the Ariel Sharon bit. That picture matches up with all the descriptions I've heard of the "Great Pumpkin" a.k.a. Aurora.
-
Yeah you never know these days... but in this case, someone else took this at the same time 10 miles away.

Looks like a contrail... not going down in the frame, but going up with the sun illuminating the tail end.
-
But then the 'tail end' looks a bit more intact and 'fresh'.
If you compare both pics, the 2nd pic (the one sandy posted) looks more disipated and 'older' near the top than it does the bottom.
Do the colors of the "fire" match the sunlight on the clouds? They seem to differ very slightly. Although it's probably just the angle.
-
they was saying on space.com they thought it was the Concorde with sunlight reflecting off it. I don't think so :p
most likely an alien inseminating ship entered our atmosphere and pretty soon a deadly virus will make alien babies inside women at PMS.
-
I knew Star Wars was real... I just knew it...
-
It looks like some type of 'fuel burn' but I don't understand the 'how' or 'why'.
I think the F-111 (no longer in service) could do something like this by jetisoning fuel and turning on the AB. It was a 'party trick' they did at Air Shows.
Very strange....
-
Its not a contrail.
Look at the relative lighting of the clouds above and below, and the trail. It doesn't add up to be something lit by the sun. If it is lit by the sun then the rest of the trail should show it.
Wonder what the relative scale is, that looks like a fairly high cloud layer, that would make it a big arse smoke trail and a big object creating it.
-
here's my take supporting the illuminated contrail:
A contrail from a nearby decending Concord (space.com never said the bright stuff WAS a concord). Since the angle at which both photos were snapped is kind of skewed, the trail appears to be decending (left to right) and not parallel to the surface.
Perhaps the concord decends, leaves a contrail in the cooler air at higher altitudes, and hits a warmer pocket or layer of air at a certain point... warm enough to prevent further formation. Perhaps the cooler/warmer air is dramatic and rising warm air at this alt "squishes" or distorts the contrail.
The distorted end just happens to be in direct path of sunlight....
It's possible =] Just not enough evidence to test it
-
In the first picture, look at the illumation of it. The whitest area is facing the sun with it becoming less illuminated in areas that are more than likely not near the sun and finally ending in cloud like colors towards the edge.
Or Uranus ate too many beans last night. Get it, Uranus? God of sky, get it? Get it?

That's what it looks like to me octavius.
-
It's a contrail. Digital Cameras don't have the dynamic range of film cameras; the result is that the generic settings necessary to get the surroundings are going to overexpose the reflected light in the contrail. Add in some chromatic distortion at the edges fo the settings, a fast-moving jet, and there you go.
I live under J-80 and see a lot of beautiful contrails. Can only think of a couple clear days when there weren't any of any sort. And those were bad days.
-
The light can do strange things... this is a Minuteman missile shot out of Vandenberg that happened about a year ago.
The "freshest" part of the contrail is the at the top of the screen.
-
It is a contrail, illumninated with the color orange by a setting sun, and billowed by wind.
According to Occam's razor, this is what it is.

the AH BBS solves yet another of life's mysteries... wtg! :D

cruise missle test gone bad. thats what it looks like to me.

LOL!!!
Good one!! :D Signature material for sure!!

gorgeous shot, Sandman. Amazing how beauty can be found in something like a Minuteman.
It seems like the concord theory could be backed up. I mean, we have plenty of documentation on transsonic vehicles. Does this mean that in the 4 decades of sonic flight, there hasn't been one shot of a contrail like this one?
The great part about this one, is that is sounds JUST like the "light from venus reflected off of methane emissions from swamp water" routine. It's just WAY too conspiracy theory.
