Title: Blue Skies and Frame Rates
Post by: Halo on October 16, 2003, 01:48:21 PM
I'm not qualified to comment much on technical aspects of Aces High II or anything else, but from the great unwashed average player perspective, I'm a little concerned whether Aces High II will preserve the good frame rates and excellent all around visibility of the present Aces High.

My P4 2.26 gHz frame rates offline drop from 50s and 60s in Aces High to 20s and 30s in Aces High II.  I know more detail always costs plenty, but to me that's a high price for not that much commensurate thrill.

I also appreciate more realistic skies and overall environments, but I hope Aces High will preserve enough brightness and contrast to keep flying enjoyable.  It was sad to see WarBirds III darken into a permanent gloom of dark blue and brown and gray that made it zero fun.

I know it was WB and not my computer, because its previous version was fine as were all the other games and programs I used.

Aces High II flight handling, especially around the ground, seems to be what I imagine to be more realistic (I'm not a real pilot), but the new tracers are quite distracting.  Since like many sim pilots I fly with tracers turned off, they shouldn't be a problem on line, but I do wonder about all the pyrotechnics and spaghetti smoke. Real pilots must have had fantastic powers of concentration to hit anything through all that commotion.

I join others in hoping all the cockpits and exteriors can be spiffed up.  The 190 cockpit in particular has such ugly bars that I naturally gravitate to better looking rides.

Exterior views continue to be much more of a chore than the grace of MS Flight Sim 2004.   But the Aces High II new wild mouse view on startup is at once the ultimate situational awareness and the ultimate arcade touch.  Not sure how that will eventually play out, but it certainly is a fast and easy way of getting oriented starting out on a mission, even in tanks.

As with a few other revered flight simulations, I hope the original Aces High can be preserved somewhere for a long time.  Just like some of the Red Barons and WarBirds and Falcons, some games deserve immortality, and Aces High (original) is one of them.
