Title: Why is there such a lack of B29 combat reports?
Post by: davidpt40 on October 16, 2003, 09:51:59 PM
Theres probably thousands of first hand accounts of combat from B17 gunners or pilots on the internet.  Hundreds of books also.

But I have not been able to find anything similar with the B29.  The only first hand account I have of B29 combat is one from "Great American Bombers of World War II" which talks about a B29 sinking a Japanese ship with 50cals.

Does anyone know why there are not many accounts of B29s in  combat?

I'd suggest you start here:

http://b-29.org/

Then go to http://www.abebooks.com  and search for a copy of Steve Birdsell's book "Saga of the Superfortress".  Lots of photos and personal accounts.  If you are a US WW2 bomber fan, That book, along with Birdsell's "Log of the Liberator" and Edward Joblonski's "Flying Fortress" are must haves.

Java Java Java Java Java Java Java Java Java Java Java Java Java

Bah! I shoot down alot of Enemy Aircraft and do alot of work in a B26 because its fast, has a good bombload, and you can vulch and deack with its foreward firing guns. When I need something that carries more bombs than an A20, but is faster than a B17, I use a B29. Of course the lack of a belly gun is very limiting, but not so much as the Lancs.

New book "Flyboys" has a few chapters in it about the b29 firebomb raids on Japan. Definetly a good read all in all. Lots of first hand accounts.

I think the 29 should be put in AH minus the A-bomb.

Though priced like a  tempest or close to it.
Title: Superfortress

Why not have the b29(nobody's even talking about the a-bomb anymore)? If the superfortress were in the inventory, it would be perhaps the only perk-worthy bomber there. As cool as the arado is in theory, it's just not a big enough step above the b26 as far as functionality. I'd give away the speed advantage anyday for the defensive guns of the b26.
