When I am in reverse and steer at the same time, I hear a screeching noise from the front. it also happens sometimes when I take turns at low speed in drives, but it is much more pronounced in reverse. I drive a Mazda Protege 2001.
thanks for any input.

Brakes about worn out ..?
a motor mount broken ?
Is the noise coming from front or rear of car ??

Check CV joints

As Roscoroo mentioned, check your engine mounts if it's more noisey in reverse - engine will be bouncing more towards the bulkhead. Try selecting first gear with handbrake on and slipping the clutch so the wheels are taking up drive, then letting the clutch in and out gently but listening out for noises from under the bonnet. Try again but in reverse. The engine will be rocking against the engine mounts. Sometimes the mounts are okay but the rubber in the mounts just need some rubber grease. You can often quiet them down by using some lube spray like WD40 - you may have to have a friend listen under the bonnet.
BTW is it manual or automatic? Front wheel drive?
If manual, select reverse (engine off!) and check if anything is loose and rubbing/scraping against the selector rod.
If automatic perhaps a valve in the auto-box is on the way out and you're hearing fluid from that? Make sure auto box is at correct level and see if there is any dirt on the auto dipstick too.
Also, the brake pads. Some have shims between the pad and the caliper and when corrosion builds up on the edge of the brake disk they can make a noise against the shims - it might be okay forward but in reverse they're catching a part of the shim that's angled more towards the disk when in reverse. I've even seen stones stuck between the caliper and brake disk that's made a similar noise too. You really need to identify which area of the vehicle the noise is coming from for us to help you.

does it do it if you turn the wheels while not moving? if so it's your power stearing belt (tension, or just worn and glased)
if not I'd suspect the cv joints.

Check the front bumper and see if there is some really ugly woman hanging on and trying to stop you from leaving after another cheap and tawdry one night stand. :lol

Definitely a CV joint problem in the transaxles. Not a difficult problem to fix if you've got the repair manual for it and some basic tools. A friend of mine had the same prob with his Mazda a few months back.

I think Click and Clack, the Tappet brothers, would now ask;
1. What color is your car?
2. Do you find that this noise happens more when your gas tank is half empty than when it is half full?
-
Probably the flux capacitor.

Where I'd start.

Brake rotor(s) are dying and not releasing fully.
-
A screeching noise is probably the powersteering pump dying. If it was a clicking or knocking noise I'd say it was the CV joints giving way.
-
If it is coming from one side,I'd still say the brake rotor isn't releasing.
I had the same problem, and that's what it turned out to be.When I did my brakes,I found this out,and ended up replacing the rotors-problem solved.
Does the sound seem to be coming from the engine,or from the sides?
-
thanks for the input. As you might have guessed, I'm not too familiar with cars. I'll get it checked tomorrow at a mechanic's, but it always help to sound like you know what you're talking about instead of just saying..."there's a noise in there" and then get ripped off :)

Check your brake caliper bolts. Could be a lose calipher bolt as it would not make any strange sounds forward but in reverse would screech.
If the sound is caused only when wheels are in rotation, the other suspect could be the CV joints just starting to go bad. Clicking sounds.
Note: When your steering wheel is turned near full lock your front wheels are not parallel, due to toe and ackerman. This causes a slight amount of scrub on the wheels sometimes causing a vibration etc... causing something to squeak in that general area.

I gotta go along with checking the brakes on this one. They self adjust when you back up and are more likely to indicate a problem then as opposed to normal forward movements.
Same thing happened recently to my Mitsi Eclipse, only made a noise when I backed out of the driveway and turned on the street. I went all the way and changed the rotors as well as the pads. No more problems.
Good luck with yours.
