Title: 1.991 Frame Rate Tests
Post by: Pyro on October 20, 2003, 05:02:34 PM
Please use this thread to report your test results.  Make other comments in a different thread please.

Aces High II Version 1.991 Open Beta

This second version of the beta includes a number of optimizations.  The initial
start-up should be much faster and frame-rate was improved.

With this version we're primarily looking for performance feedback from a series
of tests.  Each test should be performed as follows:

1- Startup the game and stay in the default airfield tower.
2- Minimize the clipboard.
3- Record framerate VidMem and Vidmen Used once it has stabilized.
4- Change video settings for next test, click apply, repeat steps 2 and 3.

Common Video Settings-  The following video settings should be set as follows
for all the tests.

Resolution - 1024 x 768
Color Depth - 32 bit
Frame-rate - Unlimited
Gamma - 1.0
Disable Palettized Textures - Unchecked
Horizon - Checked

View range set to max (SHIFT F1)

Video Memory Test

This test is to make sure that AH2 does not use more video memory than is
available on your video card.  If memory usage exceeds the capacity of
your video card, your frame-rate will be severely impacted.  If you have
128 MB of video memory on your video card, you can skip this test.

Settings

Max Texture Size - Unlimited
Bump Mapping - Checked
Transitions - Checked
Displayed Object Size - Slider full left

1- Note Frame Rate
2- Change Max Texture Size to 128, click apply, minimize clipboard and check
frame-rate.  If your frame-rate does not go up, set Max Texture Size back to
unlimited and leave it there for all further tests.  If your frame-rate does
increase, keep incrementing the Max Texture Size until your frame-rate drops
and then set it back to the highest setting that still runs at the faster
frame-rate.  Use this Max Texture Size setting for all the tests.

Test 1

Bump Mapping - Checked
Transitions - Checked
Displayed Object Size - Slider full left

Record frame-rate VidMem and VidMem Used in the tower with clipboard minimized.

Test 2

Bump Mapping - Unchecked
Transitions - Checked
Displayed Object Size - Slider full left

Record frame-rate VidMem and VidMem Used in the tower with clipboard minimized.

Test 3

Bump Mapping - Unchecked
Transitions - Unchecked
Displayed Object Size - Slider full left

Record frame-rate VidMem and VidMem Used in the tower with clipboard minimized.

Test 4

Bump Mapping - Unchecked
Transitions - Unchecked
Displayed Object Size - Slider full right

Record frame-rate VidMem and VidMem Used in the tower with clipboard minimized.

Report your results in the AH2 beta forum in the frame-rate test thread.
Please include your system CPU, memory, video card specs, and the
Max Texture Size setting you used to perform the tests.
Aces High II Version 1.99 Open Beta

The Beta version of AH2 will install in a separate directory and can be launched
from Start/Program Files/HTC/Aces High II.  Installation of the Beta will not
affect your existing Aces High install.  The beta only supports offline play.

The purpose of this limited open beta version is to test core level functionality
and performance across a wide spectrum of hardware configurations.  We're
interested in lockups, crashes, major rendering errors, and frame-rate.  Please
make your reports in the AH2 Beta bug forum on our message board.  Please refrain
from reporting minor bugs (like tracers or some gauges not displaying correctly)
at this time.  We'll be soliciting reports for those and gameplay issues in subsequent
versions of the beta.  When making reports please include your system specs.

We're only interested in the tower frame-rates for now.  We'll address flying
frame-rates in future beta releases.

We are also looking for any bugs involving moving the clipboard around.  The
clipboard can no longer be placed off screen.  Please report any bugs related
to this.

Thanks for your help in testing this.

Maybe I'm just dumb, but I never see TexVidMem in the display, just VidMem.  Anyway, with that in mind:

Test 1:  FR 49   VidMem 68.3
Test 2:  FR 52   VidMem 64.9
Test 3:  FR 54   VidMem 61.7

Max Texture Size was unlimited.
Video Memory Test skipped because of 128 MB card.

Sorry for the confusion on the VidMem.  I made a mistake in the writeup.  I edited the post with the correctly identify the numbers we're looking for.  HT is interested in the 3rd line down which is VidMem and Used.  Along with frame rate of course.

Though I have 128 megs vid mem I ried the video memory test anyway and found that the frame rate was not affected by max texture size. But at 128 I lost the framework in the tower window.

Max texture size set at unlimited

i noticed some difference in the tests each time i repeated them on this machine , the test results here are the most standard #'s i got.

But then again this machine is a collection of spare parts from recycled from other machines. ill repeat this test with the 30.xx drivers and see if theres a difference.

With the 30.82 det drivers installed
the frame rates increased by 1 fps in all tests used mem dropped 2.5-1.0

The video card indeed is a Radeon 9600 TX, it was built under license by MSI and sold solely (afaik) to a german company called Medion. Here's some info on the card:
http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/video/display/20030328095442.html

most accessible info on the card is in german though, at least google didn't turn up any other english sites than the one above. If you do need performance charts and more technical information about the card tell me and I'll post a translation.

Noted problems: Horizon reversed (black horizon) disable palettized textures won't fix the problem.

Drone textures flicker and go transparent at distances past 200ft.

Building textures do not always display correctly.

Prop animation shows large buggy blocks when black horizon is on background.

Alt-tab works only once after which display doesn't update correctly after alt-tab (tower remains visible.)

=====================================
VidMem Test with Texture Size, Display Object Size <--

With Texture Size unlimited:  FR = 43, VM = 63.3, VMU = 54.8
With Texture Size 128:  FR = 43, VM = 63.3, VMU = 30.0

Went back to Texture Size unlimited.

NOTE:  window panes in tower looked like tank main gun sight with 128 texture size.

===================================

Test 1:  Bumps and Transitions checked, DOS <--
                FR = 43, VM = 63.3, VMU = 54.8

Test 2:  Bumps unchecked, Transitions checked, DOS <--
                FR = 43, VM = 63.3, VMU = 44.4

Test 3:  Bumps and Transitions unchecked, DOS <--
                FR = 53, VM = 63.3, VMU = 41.2

Test 4:  Bumps and Transitions unchecked, DOS -->
                FR = 80, VM = 63.3, VMU = 38.7

====================================

Clipboard Movement Problems:

1.  Resizing During Movement
I shrank the clipboard to about 2/3 of its default size.  I then moved the clipboard around the edges of the screen.  When doing so counter-clockwise, the clipboard jumped back to full default size when it hit the lower right corner of the screen.  This is repeatable.  However, this does NOT occur when moving clockwise.  It only happens going counter-clockwise.

2.  Sun Glare
Clipboard still has sun glare on it.  The glare changes while the clipboard is being moved, zoomed, and resized.

2.8Ghz P4
1024MB DDR
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB (Default settings)

Test 1:
56fps
VidMem: 130.3M
Used: 53.0M - 61.9M

Test 2:
56fps
VidMem: 130.3M
Used: 49.6M - 56.7M

Test 3:
74fps
VidMem: 130.3M
Used: 46.5M - 51.2M

Test 4:
108fps
VidMem: 130.3M
Used: 41.6M - 46.3M

Vid mem used was not consistent if I repeated the test, varying by around 1-2M. It also went up roughly 4M-9M if I used the hatswitch to change views.

1- Startup the game and stay in the default airfield tower.
2- Minimize the clipboard.
3- Record framerate VidMem and Vidmen Used once it has stabilized.        37 - 30.2M - 29.9M
4- Change video settings for next test, click apply, repeat steps 2 and 3.        All settings were the same

Video Memory Test

Max Texture Size - Unlimited
Bump Mapping - Checked
Transitions - Checked
Displayed Object Size - Slider full left

1- Note Frame Rate    34
2- Change Max Texture Size to 128, click apply, minimize clipboard and check      40
256=37, 512=35 - set back to 128

Test 1

Bump Mapping - Checked
Transitions - Checked
Displayed Object Size - Slider full left

Record frame-rate VidMem and VidMem Used in the tower with clipboard minimized.   40 - 30.2M - 28.3M

Test 2

Bump Mapping - Unchecked
Transitions - Checked
Displayed Object Size - Slider full left

Record frame-rate VidMem and VidMem Used in the tower with clipboard minimized.   40 - 30.2M - 17.3M

Test 3

Bump Mapping - Unchecked
Transitions - Unchecked
Displayed Object Size - Slider full left

Record frame-rate VidMem and VidMem Used in the tower with clipboard minimized.   44 - 30.2M - 14.6M

Test 4

Bump Mapping - Unchecked
Transitions - Unchecked
Displayed Object Size - Slider full right

Record frame-rate VidMem and VidMem Used in the tower with clipboard minimized.   55 - 30.2M - 14.4M

Frame rate problems occur....propellor arc causes anything to be seen through it to flicker.

Also....FR drops from mid 50s' to low 20s' when within 400 of target.

Title: "Upgrade" HA!
Post by: Bullethead on October 25, 2003, 01:35:54 PM
Well, I bought more memory and a new video card in an attempt at a cheap upgrade.  But my AH2 framerates actually got worse.  Here's the story:

Old system:  P4-1.7GHz, WinME, DirectX 9.0, 256MB, GeForce3 64MB
New system:  P4-1.7GHz, WinME, DirectX 9.0, 512MB, Radeon 9600 Pro 128MGB

In both systems, frame rate didn't change in the vidmem test so used unlimited in both.  Horizon always checked, disable palettized textures always unchecked.  1024x768x32

Test 1:  Bumps, Transitions, DOS <--
Old System:  FR 43, VM 63.3, VMU 54.8
New System:  FR 34, VM 129.9, VMU 53.1

Test 2:  no bumps, Transitions, DOS <--
Old System:  FR 42, VM 63.3, VMU 44.4
New System:  FR 32, VM 129.9, VMU 49.6

Test 3:  no bumps, no transistions, DOS <--
Old System:  FR 53, VM 63.3, VMU 41.2
New System:  FR 44, VM 129.9, VMU 46.5

Test 4:  no bumps, no transitions, DOS -->
Old System:  FR 80, VM 63.3, VMU 38.7
New System:  FR 73, VM 129.9, VMU 41.6

So, at the bottom line, doubling RAM and putting in the new vidcard resulted in a loss of about 10 FPS across the board.....    I'm currently using the driver that came on the Radeon's CD, which is dated April 03.  I see there's a new one from Oct 03 on the web site, so I'll get it and see if that helps.  BTW, in AH1, things improved with the new system....

In addition, I now have a new problem with the clipboard   In the tower, the icons on the map constantly flicker with pink/purple/yellow colors.  It's even worse when the clipboard 1st comes up on the splash screen.  Then, the pink/purple/yellow flickering applies to the entire board itself and all the text and links on it.  CHECKING the "disable palettized texture" box SOMETIMES stops this from happening and allows the clipboard to display correctly, but not always.  NOTE:  in the icon colors area, the color patches display correctly without the wrong colors flickering over them.

Here's a pic of the pink/purple/yellow flickering:

Title: New Driver
Post by: Bullethead on October 25, 2003, 02:58:34 PM
OK, got the newest drivers from the ATI site.  This did the following:

#1.  Eliminated "gay clipboard" problem :)

#2.  NO EFFECT at all on frame rates.  All FR, VM, and VMU numbers exactly the same as in my last post.

Funny how a 3-yr old Nvidia card with only 64MB onboard has better FPS than a new ATI card....   to keep from crying.

Yea but if AH2 was a DX9 game then it would be a different story.

Updated video driver and adjusted nvidia setings to achieve the following

AMD XP2400+ (266) (but at 133 x 12.5 = 1.666Mhz)
GF FX5600 256DDR (quincunx AA + 0 x anistropic + medium intellisample + enabled fog emulation @ high image)
512RAM (133)
SB5.1
Old Proview770 (needs gamma (set to 3 on nvidia)to be used can barely see screen at AH Gamma 1 (requires 2.5 minimum))

However at settings requested for test

test #/FR/Vidmem/Vidused

1/48/260/44.0
2/48/260/44.0
3/60/260/42.0
