Title: My RAF Plane List for AH2
Post by: Guppy35 on October 21, 2003, 10:24:59 AM
Since we're going with really rediculous lists of wants:

Spitfire Ia
Spitfire Ib (Some saw combat in the B of B with the cannon!)
Spitfire IIa
Spitfire IIb(More cannon)
Spitfire Va (If it's good enough for Douglas Bader it's good enough for me)
Spitfire FVb
Spitfire LFVb(Clipped wings low alt performer)
Spitfire FVbTrop(Had em in the desert and the Pacific)
Spitfire FVc
Spitfire LFVc(Clipped wings, low alt etc)
Spitfire FVcTrop (You get the idea)
Spitfire VI (Early high alt, pressurized bird, saw combat)
Spitfire VII(Two stage Merlin high alt pressurized etc)
Spitfire LFVIIIc (Clipped with low alt etc)
Spitfire FVIIIc
Spitfire HFVIIIc
Spitfire LFIXc
Spitfire LFIXe
Spitfire FIXc
Spitfire FIXe
Spitfire HFIXc
Spitfire HFIXe
Spitfire XII (Gotta love that Griffon down low and if you have the nerve to ask for a 109T, then this has to be there as it saw frontline combat from Feb 43-September 44.  Hell the 109T never even had a carrier to fly from.  A few in Norway and folks want that one?)
Spitfire XIVc
Spitfire XIVe(High and low back versions please)
Spitfire LFXVI(American made Packard Merlins can't be all bad)
Spitfire FXVI (Yeah that bubble canopy is nice, should have the high back too if we are going to  be accurate.  Clipped wings as well)
Spitfire XVIII
Spitfire 21(Definately saw latewar combat If the TA152 has a place why not the 21?)
Spitfire 22
Spitfire 24

I'll leave out the recce versions, but since folks seem to want every last version of the 109 and 190 regardless of actual use, I want every last Spit version too :)

And if we're going to ask for really limited number/use LW bombers then you'd better include:

Stirlings
Halifaxes
Wellingtons
Blenheims
Venturas
Hudsons
Whitleys
Hampdens
Baltimores
Marylands
Battles

And how bout more Mossie variants, and Beaufighters too! :)

Only Slack could make a list like this...   :)

In all seriousness, Slack probably has forgotten more about spits than we will ever know. Nothing 'dweeb' about it, hes just as happy in a early war Spit against FW190s and 262s (yea, I still remember that scenario).

Tho, I will admit, seeing some more Mossies would be nice.

Yep I'm a Spit dweeb, for far longer then computer flight sims have been around.  Funny part is no one smelled the sarcasm in the post.  It was merely a response to the LW want list.  Mine was as silly as that one.

I see all kinds of folks arguing for this version of the 109 or 190 and putting graphs and charts up to explain why, when in fact there are more then enough 190s and 109s just like there are more then enough Spits in AH.

Would  a Beaufighter be nice?  Yep I think so.  Would the He111?  Probably for the historical scenarios and such.  Probably a Pe2 would be a good addition for the Russians or one of those 3 engine Italian bombers or one of their other fighters.  A P39 or a Buffalo might be fun too.  I'd like a Liberator just to see Ploesti get run once with the right bomber for the low level raid.  I'd like an early model 38F or G too.

There are any number of other aircraft besides some different version of the 109, 190 or Spit that should be added long before another variant of any of the three is added.

I'd like to see a typical 1944 Spitfire MkIX - bubble top, clipped wing, and the better merlin engine. Just like there's a large gap between the '43 Bf109G-6 and the '44 G-10, there's a large gap also between AH Spit9 and Spit14.

If I remember correctly, our Spit9's the worst Spit9 from late 1942 - is this correct? With some hybrid ahistoric armament option such as rockets or .50s.

If that is so, probably, the most needed RAF fighter in terms of plane set, would be that gap filler. Therefore, I'd like to see a Bf109G-6 with a DB605AS or a G-14 with DB605AM, and along side it, the clipped wing Spit9.

ps) Guppy, if you don't mind, please explain to me about RAF Spit designations - really confusing. What I know is the "F" and "LF" designation originally doesn't have to do with the wing shape, but in most cases, it's safe to assume a "F" spit had normal wings, and the "LF" had clipped wings. <- is this correct?

What exactly is our AH Spit9 then? Spitfire fMkIXe? Spitfire fMKIXc? What's the "c" and "e" designation for?

What would be the typical '44, clipped wing, bubble top SPit9 be ??

The HF, F, LF designations had to do with the version of the Merlin that was in the Spit and how it was rated, for High alt HF, Medium alt F and Low alt LF work.  The first Spit IX was an FIX as the war was still being fought between 20 & 30K.  But the best of the Spit IXs was the LF IX which was rated for it's best work 20K and below.  All three variants were produced throughout the war with the LF getting the most production.  With the Medium bombers that the Spits escorted in 43-44 going in at 18K or so it made the most sense and with the use of the Spit in the ground attack role in the time frame just prior to D-Day and then post D-Day on the continent it made sense.

It had nothing to do with the wing type as the LF used both regular span and clipped wings.  the LF also could have the C wing with 2 20s and 4 303s or the E wing with the 2 20s and the 2 50 cal.

As for the bubble top.  This was very late in the war, probably March-April 45 before any LF 16s or any LF 14s showed up that had them.

the AH Spit is a hybrid that seems to be a copy of the 42 Spit IX with a 44-45 E wing with the hardpoints of an XVI but I'm not positive on that.  I guess that kinda makes it an FIXe. when I suppose it should be an FIXC for 42.  I know most Spit pilots considered what the refered to as the Spit IXB as their favorite.  This technically was a Spit LFIXc or LFIXe.

Yes it would be nice to have a clipped E wing, broad chord rudder  LF IX or XVI, but I'd think they'd look at some other birds first.
