Going with my ex. She's into most of the same stuff I am though. Any interesting sights? Cheap places to get a room? Areas to stay away from?
I'm leavin tomorrow for a road trip to MN, this is just one of the stops. I'm also curious as to whats in that whole area to visit because after chicago i have about 3 or so days to get to Minniapolis and i need to figure out something to do
-
Shedd aquarium, natural history museum.
-
Mr. Beef (Italian beef, hot giardinera) and Giordano's (stuffed Special, don't mess around with the thin crust crap). Also look for places selling Vienna Beef hot dogs and get one with everything.
-
hungry funked?
-
LOL yeah I was. :)
But seriously, those are great places to eat food that you can only get in Chicago.
IMHO the best things about Chicago are the ballparks, the food, the bars, and the L.
-
The Shedd aquarium and natural history museum are part of the University of Chicago. There's the Adler Planetarium also. All within the local grouping of buildings.
Adler Planetarium (http://www.adlerplanetarium.org/)

For you Moose, that would be Rush Street:)
-
Museum of Science and Industry -- visit the U-505. They also have a Stuka and BOB Spit 2 hanging from the ceiling.
Shedd and Adler -- Field Museum if you like natural history (bit dry for me).
Cheap accomodations... Good luck. There are some good motels at the north end of Lake Shore Drive. A bit plain and out of the action but clean and safe and under $100. An easy L ride downtown or into the party areas.
For nightlife:
Rush Street (where lawyers go to hook up with receptionists)
Wrigleyville & Lincoln Park (younger bar scene) Cabaret Metro for both Rock (national bands) and the Smart Bar in the basement for clubbin (in wrigleyville). Various blues culbs.
For Food:
A lot of little places in the neighborhoods you'll probably never get to. Giordanos for Pizza (Lou Malnati's too). Actually, its a tourist place but Navy Pier has a good selection of quality resturants.
I would show you around myself, but this weekend is locked up already.

To do:
-Museum of Science and Industry (Some good aviation stuff)
-Field Museum (One of the best 'regular' museums in the country)
-Shedd Aquiarium (Second only to Baltimore's)
-Adler Planetarium (Awesome if youre into astronomy)
-Wrigley Field (No brainer)
-Soldier Field (Im not sure what the construction altered about the building, but it used to be a very unique stadium - had more in common with a castle than a football field - its also right next to all the museums)
(Nightlife has been covered)
Food:
-Portillos (Best hot dogs in the nation - but unless you put everything on it, dont even bother. Also try their 'beef' that -Funked was speaking of - Portillos does it best. A 'beef' is kinda like a Philly cheese steak, but the meat is cooked differently and there is no cheese. FIgure out what you want ahead of time or they start screaming at you - its fun)
-Mortons (Duh)
-Billy Goat (Tavern - 'Cubs curse.')
PS: Chicago food is very onion and mustard/horseradish heavy - its a taste that isnt quite duplicated anywhere else. The food is fantastic - everything from a sub/hoagie/hero to exotic dishes has its own unique 'Chicago' taste.
PPS: When/if you order soda, dont be confused when your server asks you 'what kind of Coke do you want?' Coke = soda, so its perfectly acceptable to answer her question with 'Sprite.' :D
Hotels:
Plenty around Ohare and you can take the El anywhere you want to go. The marathon is over so finding a room shouldnt be difficult at all.
Have fun - its a great town.
-
Museum of Science and Industry, as mentioned, good aviation stuff and you can tour inside a German U-Boat.
Pizza - go to Ginos East or Unos.
In Minneapolis, not much exciting to see except the Mall of American.
dago
-
Perhaps he remains of Meigs Field....was that ever resolved?
-
Bears and Lions at the new Soldier Field this weekend. Go for the tailgating at the very least. Some great people out there before the games.
You also must sample Sliders and deep dish pizza and Vienna beef hot dogs.
mmm.... White Castle.
:aok
-
Shedd aquarium would be a great place to take a woman.
Museum of Science and Industry, as mentioned earlier, has the U-505 there. I always love wandering through it.
-
Go see a taping of the ophra show:aok

Choose carefully Moose, any time you spend at places you want to go will be punished by twice the time at the Mall of America.

Ditto what everybody else said... and try to find a small place called "Flash Taco!" Squeezed between some large buildings in the downtown district. I forget what street it's on, but if you find it, you're in for some DAMN GOOD colon cleansing! :D

Want the best prime rib go to lawrys
-
Well, I got 27 years of living in the Chicago burbs, so here goes;
Clear day - Take her to Sears Tower for a good vista.
Nightime - Go to the 95th floor in the John Hancock Building
Daytime - Walk along North Michigan Ave., let her see the stores, or walk the lake front Shedd Aquarium to Navy Pier.
Museums - Science and Industry, Shedd, Art Institute.
Hotels - well there isn't any cheap hotels downtown- find a chain like Holiday Inn, or stay in the burbs outside of Chicago
Places to listen to the Blues - Buddy Guy's Legends, Kingston Mines, House of Blues, Back Door, lots of good places, etc.(Fitzgerald's in Berwyn is great), and if you dig the girl your with, take her to the Redhead Piano bar - seating around the piano.
Movies - 900 N. Michigan Ave.
Hungry? So many places to eat...Seafood is Shaw's Crab House(I'm from Maryland, I know crabs), Signature Room 95th floor of John Hancock Building, deep dish pizza(you don't get bad pizza anywhere in the Chicago area, best thing Wisconsin ever did was CHEESE), Houston's, Ed Debevic's, Pick em'
Chicago is a great city...but like any city, it can bite you, don't venture away from the downtown when on foot, stay around the Loop, North Michigan area, Navy Pier, River North, and Near North areas. Be aware of who is around you, and where you are...
Thorns
P.S. If you see the Old Onz Oldman, he knows Chicago better than Richie Daley :D

Ohhh go to Ricobenes and get their wings on the bed of fries. its so good. If you get drunk and are out at 5 in the morning and want to pollute your body stop by one of the Maxwell Street Diner trailers (ie Ghettodog) for a 2.22 Dog,Bag of fries, and an rc cola.
For a cheap place to stay ther are some ~100 a night places around the Roosevelt stop on the red/green line that are actually pretty nice. I think one was a holiday inn over on Michigan but its a little hazy, I havent lived there in 2 years now.
-
No one mentions Union Station?
Sad Sad Sad.
-
No one mentions Union Station?
LOL. It's classical/historic architecture, but to me it's just a place to have a couple of cocktails and catch the train back to the burbs on occasion :)

You must be numb to the fact that that single building epitomizes the greatest era of your city. Visit it, if not to take a train, to witness and learn what was built to grace cities before the curse of modernism.
This is full structure, in 1969 the concourse (the building in the foreground) was demolished to make way for a misguided "urban renewl" project.

Sooo
We got a room in Elgin, and that worked out great. ;-)
Saw the sears tower... fun fun
Ate some deep dish pizza at this Gierdaniossss something place which was excellent. Watched the Yanks get beat by the Marlins!! WOooooooo
Got lost trying to find the Museum of Science and Industry. Ended up taking the train down to 63rd street (waaay south chicago) and that was real scary. Needless to say we made it outta the projects on foot and got to the museum just in time for closing :(
Tried to go see some blues, but of course she isn't 21 so we got nixed there too.
However we had a good time and I managed to stay in the right state. I'm actually still with her, she doesn't want me to leave now so I'm like 3 days past leaving Wisconsin :)

I think somebody must be taking Architecture Appreciation 101 in junior college. :D

Lived in Mt. Prospect, IL 60056... Chicago never really was "my kind of town". Someone once said it has all the disadvantages of New York with none of the advantages. But I've been to most of those places people have suggested. I also liked the La Villa restaurant on Pulaski, about four blocks S of Irving Park Road. Loved Wrigley Field and drinking Old Style.

I'm well aware of Chicago's architectural history, and I have marvaled at Union station both before and after recent renovations. But, at some point it becomes a place to catch the train. BTW, for any architecture buffs out there there are a variety of street and even river tours in the city that visit exceptional sites.
Someone once said it has all the disadvantages of New York with none of the advantages.
I have spent quite a bit of time in NYC, and my opinion is the opposite. If you just consider odor, downtown Chicago has NYC beat. NYC is a great city, and Manhattan an exciting place, but to me it's just too crowded, gray, dirty, expensive, rude and impersonal for my tastes. All cities have some of this, but for its size Chicago seems to feel more "Toronto" like. Daley may be a tool, but he does keep the city polished up nicely.
... and drinking Old Style
Beetle, for the love of god man, why Old Style? You come from a country that actually produces good beer. I loved Old Style in High School because the bottle was shaped like a little hand grenade at the time and you could toss them far and listen to the empty "explode." Plus, I loved any cheap form of alcohol that I could get my hands on.

thats awesome.. feel free to call me, i might still be in the area. if i do end up here ill be dressed as a wwi snoopy

Chicago is a terrible place to visit. I urge to avoid lakeside drive, the numerous museums and particularly the Greek restaurants. Also at this time of year the weather is very bland, and the leaves are turning funny colors. By all means avoid the leaf-strewn roads of locales such as highland park.

Sorry Im late, but you should have got a good cigar, dressed up, and went on
this. (http://www.odysseycruises.com/)
Toking on the top deck with Chicago layed out in front of you has to be experienced. Great bands, great food, Classy boat. Frank tunes like "It was a very good year" is quite impressive, unlike the pizza joints.

i saw some guy in a priest costume and i asked him if he was you. he wasnt. :-P

there were tons of priests walking around but I only saw one other priest with a boy around his waist.
Everywhere I went I got awesome reactions. Atleast 20 people wanted pictures with me :D err the dummy boy :)
Saturday night (sunday morning) a few of my friends got rowdy and ripped his head off and smashed it. It was ok though, he looked like chucky and needed to die :D
