Title: Poll: Role-playing on AHBBS
Post by: Sandman on October 22, 2003, 10:24:16 AM
This quote got me wondering...

Quote
Perhaps I feel that here on the BBS maybe some are taking out pent up anger towards the GRUNHERZ bbs character but they are taking it out on real life me, Filip...

QUESTION: Do you role-play here on the AHBBS or is it the "real" you?

What about other BBS?

I post as 'me' here.

Everywhere else Im Hawkathorne, Lord of the Dolts.  I have +16 White Death armor and the ledgendary Sword in the Butter.  I can do 35 HP of damage with one swoop of my blade, although its ineffective against the robe and wizard hat armor.  Word at the local tavern is that one must find the Olde Booke of L337 in order to subdue its wearer.

I play myself in life as I do on the BBS( a few folks I've met know that, although I might "lure" alittle in here :)  Grun is the same in person politically speaking. (Shrugs)

And as someone mentioned earlier, very high intellect with this chap and he WILL probably be your boss someday. :)

I am just me, no acting.

I wonder if some of the mean, bitter and caustic people on this board are like this all the time?

I do play D&D now and then when we can get the group together, so I save my acting for then.

My Pali has a plus5 Holy Avenger though! :D :aok

I might add, where that other thread went "downhill" was the point where fd-ski is so desparate to make Grun and his politics look so bad that he stooped to the typical liberal ploy...humiliation of ones physical attributes.

in AH im nothing like in RL.  Football (soccer to those across the pond) and AH really bring out the competitive streak in me so most people i play against probably think im a salamander.  Not that i care of course.

In RL im much more daughter marrying material, so post pics of your 18 - 22 year old daughters here for consideration....  :D

I'm pretty much the same guy in real life. I think it's easier to tell when I'm joking about something in real life though. That's how the whole "Elfenwolfe's Trolling Acadamy Class  of 2002" thing got rolling lol.

In real life, I'm much more likely to have a political discussion with someone.

In real life I'm a good conversationalist, although after a few beers, few people can get a word in edgewise on me.

I guess I'd say I'm a bit more subdued on the BBS than I am in real life.  I think that my posts as a CM are a little closer to the normal, but that's only because I'm usually focused on communicating information, and not just BSing.

Interesting question though Sandman, thanks.

I'll vouch for this.

I think Sik is the only one on this board I've ever met in person. He is as he seems.

Scene 0- This does not exist.

It all started with a simple blown fuse. Mind you, it was in the Control Room. You know, the only room in Alpha Complex
that is Gamma Clearance. So Howard (I don't remember the other guy's name, but it's funnier if it's Moe...) and Moe get the idea to replace the old fuse with a newer, faster, more durable transistor. But it does have to fit into the old slot. So it has to be custom made. No problem. But while waiting for that part to be finished, a whole bank of RAM blew. Seems it was on the same circut as that fuse. Again, no problem, we even have newer stuff than what blew in storage. Since we need the fuse first, we may as well have them delivered to the same place, to make it easer to pick them up. Right? Sure.

But this stuff can't have random people poking around sensitive Computer equipment. So Howard assigns a mission group to guard the box. Two Green Army Citizens. They are getting restless, and restless means curious. These guys need a break. So he initiates a search for some Loyal Citizens. He knows fully what can go wrong, especially in Alpha. So he knows he has to almost coddle the group to their assignment. So he sets up a ....

Scene 1- Mission Alert!

Your mission group is poised and ready, awaiting mission orders in Troubleshooter HQ. Various screens show various things, like a blank screen, the Teela O' Malley Show, Security Cams, The Computer Test Pattern, and, of course your room. (Pause. Yawn. Stretch.)Yep. Ready and waiting. Man, that Teela O #666 "Teela Goes To HEL Sector" never gets old. You could watch her swing and bounce all day. You know you ought to be feeling something, but damned if you know what. (Put your feet up. Relax.)

Surruptiously draw a lung full of air. Shout at the top of your lungs, "Suddenly your wristcom begins spewing paper!"

***Mission Alert! Mission Alert!*** Greetings, Citizens! Please report to room IA235/PDQ93¶.htm\MDK CDM 7 in Sector DRV. Please do not disclose your destination to anyclone. Walk in a brisk manner, and do not chew gum.

KGGF479jfdeg4h058h4ih59hrtrhh rethe98RZSlack Attack!BBLzhH(*hhadf98phD*3EYION Take and personally deliver the Form AExt.4HRCvrU.P/Bi.Bl.B. from PLC to the room specified. Have A Nice Daycycle, The Computer. ***Mission Alert! Mission Alert!***

Scene 1.4- Pay Attention Now...

Notice there is no mission number. Or even a mission name. And it doesn't mention a briefing.

Scene 2- Briefing... wait, no, Where Is That From Here?.

The PC's have a few choices at this point. I'll discuss them all in turn.

Getting A Map, Checking with Secret Societies, Fooling Around, Stalling, or Trying to Go Straight There.

Trying To Go Straight There- Just ain't gonna work. Never happen. They have no idea where that room is.

Fooling Around or Stalling- Howard is watching, so The Computer prompts them, by name, and asks for an update on
their mission. If told little progress is made, The Computer suggests they hurry up, at MegaWatt Laser Point.

Checking With Secret Societies- This is second only to arguing with The Computer for futility. Any mention of the mission
is met with blank responses. No one has ANY idea that this thing is going down. Any requests for equipment is similarly
shot down, "We never heard of this mission, so, basically no. But any info about is will be .... appreciated." No one has any
favors to call in, so no worries there. No Society would even consider stealing it, either. Stealing things you know about,
fine. Stealing unknown things... not on MY doorstep.

Getting A Map- If they try a terminal, they are prompted for the destination. After entering the room number, they are
prompted for a password. This is contained within the mission alert. Should be easy to find the "Slack Attack!" If they enter
it properly they get the single most helpful "MaPPeR" program in Alpha. They list their Destination, it gives a straight line,
shuttle times, clearance coordinated, and everything. It will even print out a hard copy. However, ...(hehhehheh) that map
is real current. As in...  it goes bad in 10 minutecycles. If they get a map, then check with societies, the map will be bad, as
they get shuffled around the Complex. They get hit with credit problems at the turnstiles, asking for credits of certian
colors, denominations they don't have, getting diverted to DMV Sector, the works.

They, at some point, end up in DOA sector. There is a "map" terminal right there, though. This map is similarly current, though. But now they will have learned their lesson. If not, when printed, there is small print at the bottom, which reads, "Do not continue to push my patience. Go NOW."

Scene 2.8- This, also never happened.

Yes, notice Howard's handywork in the MaPPeR program. He's just doing what he can.

Scene 3- Masters of the Red Tape

After arriving at the aformentioned IA235/PDQ93¶.htm\MDK CDM 7  in Sector DRV, they get the privilage(?) of meeting
He-Y-MAN-4, and She-Y-RAA-3, two Yellow Clearance bureaucrats who like their jobs. They are both FCCCP, both
Adrenaline Controlled, and both CPU, they have nasal voicies, love pestering people filling out forms by talking, listing
things from other forms, comparing other forms, pointing to other sections, and especially by handing forms that require
triplicate out individually. That's pretty much all anybody needs to know. After the 3 forms are filled out, then hand the first
form and an envelope back to the PC's and instruct them to deliver them to DRV Sector R&D.

Scene 3.7- Nothing to see here...

Howard knows just what it takes to get these two going. He custom-made that envelope, too.

I'm a character.

A real life me wouldn't discuss international politics because I'm not an expert on the issue.

Here I'm sometimes baiting, sometimes chuckling on the obvious differences in perceptions around the world. Rarely do I take things really seriously. On some issues, it is the real me talking though. I try to help people with technical problems as much I can and of course then I'm trying to be as real as possible.

AH is still a game that I love even though my personal life has pretty much ended my MA career.

I love arguments, so when I see something I disagree on I go for it. Sometimes it may give a false impression - but hey, it's a BBS.

Nicknames are the same as handles.  If you are having a discussion in real life, it will not go beyond the very shallow without more information than that.

And I am not saying that this is a bad thing, just that, de facto, we are all role playing on here since there is no face-to-face or real names used.

I think that is why you will find that the rancor that exists on a BBS disappears when we meet in person.  In my experience, once we actually meet in person, the first thing to go are handles, and we call the other by their given name.

I'm totally different in person than I am here- on bulletin boards I am a dumb ***, sloppy, drunk idiot who has nothing to say unless it is disruptive. Online I am the kid in class who makes rude noizes with his armpit and launching spitballs.

In person the first thing you will be struck with is my sheer physical presence. I am a beautiful, manly man, and my boyish good looks- combined with my well chiseled body- commands attention wherever I go. That, combined with the compelingness  of my arguments, makes me a favorite among the Hollywood cocktail set.

You are priveledged (or cursed) to have me. :)

Post by: capt. apathy on October 23, 2003, 04:07:07 AM
I'm pretty much the same anywhere I go.  the only real difference I know of is that I'll stick to an argument longer on the net than I will in real life.  mostly because here there is no physical issue, just what you have to say.  in real life I usually state my case and if the other guy gets it fine if not, oh well, it's not my job to wise up every idiot out there.

the main reason I wont push too hard in real life is my size, I'm a bit over 6'2" and closing in on 300lb (quite a bit of fat but I also do heavy physical work for a living so I'm not exactly a sloth).   I never really used to think of myself as big (my size seems normal to me), but while talking to a guy at work about 10 or 12 years ago he says "of course Dave agrees with you, he's afraid you'll rip his head off if he don't"

after that I started paying a bit closer attention to body language and the like while arguing with people. and I noticed that when I start to get a bit passionate about my argument (I do love to argue) I was really starting to scare some of the people.  not a very satisfying way to win an argument.

not that I haven't used my size to my advantage at times (intimidation can cut through a lot of BS when necessary) but I always feel like I let myself down afterwards. that I gave up, because if I where smart enough I would have been able to make them see my point without going that route.  it doesn't exactly take a genius to scare the hell out of someone.

that’s one of the things I really enjoy about the net.  my ideas can stand (or fall) on their own merits and not on what someone perceives as a threat.

Post by: GRUNHERZ on October 23, 2003, 01:20:12 PM
When I first came to this BBS I was friendly and nice as I am in real life with real people - quickly I learned it was kinda pointless on the net as people were very rude and easily upset by the slightest thing and attack you just as easily with prearragenged stereotype arguments and classifications - there is a distinct lack of subtlety in these discussions. So I just developed from there and the grunherz bbs character is the result, the point being to upset these other characters as best I can if need be.

In person it's much easier to discuss differences as the exchange and reconciliation of arguments is much more fluid and natural. Not to mention there is not the same pressure to conform your thoughts and perceptions to the sterotype expected behavior- ie grun is right winger or Karnak is left winger so we gotta fight etc.

So yea while I personally am more conservative I'm certainly not the evil grunherz charcater in real life..

:)
