Salute Rip & VMF 323 it's BlueiceJ/Wildkat here. It's been a while, I was wondering what you guys are up to now a days. I am currently a United States Marine now. I signed up Sept. 23 and I ship off August 9th, 2004. I'm currently a senior in high school now. I'm pretty excited. I got my engineering job locked on and everything. I was just wondering what's up with you guys. I might take part in the Hellcat's over whatever SE tonight on my dad's name. I hope to see you there. Later All!

A Marine?!
Never woulda thunk it :) Good luck!
So how's that work? Will you be attending a university after basic for an engineering degree?
-
Hehe, I got to tell ya this. Your not a Marine yet, just a recruit still :D Sorry, had to do it. BTW, have fun, it is a blast. If ya stay out of trouble it will be a great experience for you.
And unless things have changed, don't let the DI's hear ya call yourself a marine till graduation day.
Former Marine,
Booky

Yeah Oct, I go to Boot camp for 13 weeks and than MCT, which is learning how to throw a nade and stuff and than onto get my engineering degree. I am very excited. I haven't been playing much of Aces High anymore because I play Soldier of Fortune 2, very fast paced, so that's my life now. I am thinking about returning to AH, I miss all the guys.

quality :aok

If the movies are anything close to reality Booky is right...you aren't a Marine yet. In fact you will find that you are the lowest form of human life until you are done that 13 weeks. ;)
But you WILL be a marine.
I haven't been flying at all for about 2 weeks...may be another 2 or 3...my new house has very very old telephone lines and I have to rip them all out and replace them. My DSL simply wil not work with the existing wire...and I don't have it in me to go back to dial up.
Be back up as soon as I can.

Ummm, what kind of 'engineering' job can a high school diploma get you?

davidpt40,
It's not always the diploma/degree that gets you the job. ;)
smarts, common sense, and drive help a lot.
I have no college degree and I'm an engineer at Hewlett-Packard. I am however surrounded by college dorks, some take it personal most are a great bunch of guys. Most of these guys can run rings around me with theory, but when it comes to producing physical results and knowing the function of the hardware/software, they come to me :D
It's my opinion I live a very lucky life.
Good Luck BlueiceJ see you up!

heh...funny story...when I was in boot there was a recruit named MARINE...well that didn't fly..he was known as private "private" for the whole time. :rofl
oh, and have fun with it Blueicej, er hellcat. congrats, I'm sure you'll be pleased with the experience, but you may not appreciate that until the experience is over. :lol
-
Well if thats the case, I'm an engineer too :)
-
David...it's called you go to the Marines and after boot and MCT (Marine Combat Training) you get trained in the job that you picked, mine being an engineer and you will gain a degree in less than 4 years.

Good advice, start off by visiting your nearby Army-Navy surplus store. Purchase a pair of boots and a large pack. Fill the pack with 75 lbs of whatever, strap it on and run 20 miles a day, wearing the boots. Oh...and don't forget to sprint the last mile.
Oh...and one more thing...if he asks where your from and follows up with a comment about you not having any horns, do NOT put your index fingers on either side of your head and say 'Moo'.
Good luck.

i heard one: where u from?
wisconson
Wisconson! Boy, only 2 things from wisconson: cheese and ****'s, and I don't see no mold on your head!
Perhaps you had to be there....but dam, I split a gut
-
Go watch "Mail Call" with the volume max'd for a few months....just to be ready :)
I did the Air Force routine. Boot camp was such a let down. Never did a pushup but could I fold underwear! I suppose they desire attention to detail...lol....I really wanted to have a good time on the confidence course and firing the M-16s. Well the lackland confidence course looks like where your kids play when you go out for ice cream. And the M-16s had the .22LR conversions in them that jammed every 3rd round.
You'll enjoy the corp...

Thank you for all the advice guys. I ended up running 2 miles in 17:17 on Thursday (last thursday), that is equal to just under 13 minutes for a mile and a half, which i need to run at the start of bootcamp in 13 minutes 30 secs. Seems like a lot of people have gone into the military, I am definately looking forward to it.

Woah... hey man, what "kind" of degree are you talking about? Are you going to be doing a reserve/rotc kind of thing after MCT or straight active enlisted? You do realize that military training alone will NOT get you a college level 4yr degree, it will get you close(er) to a 2yr but definately not a 4yr. Not trying to call you on anything here but, I'm a little concerned about some recruiter telling you will slide into a degree by joining the USMC and doing all the required training for 4 years, it just doesn't work that way.

whats your ht and wt? in high school you should be sub seven minutes per mile anywhere up to five miles. dont aim for the min thats trouble. youre never gonna be rested or without a cold or a sprain or something when you get timed. youve got a little under a year being in high school you could be a machine by the time you show up for boot camp. youve got plenty of time dont increse your daily run distances by more than 1/10 each week. if you havent been running regular then take third and fourth week of to avoid shin splints. go to your cross country coach for running program tell him you are going marines. go to your wrestling coach for a pt program and tell him you are going marines. when you show up for boot you want to be able to double the reps and half the times for anything they ask you to do. that way if you bust an ankle or get in trouble your di is gonna see you are hard core and maybe cut you some slack. "your reputation begins in boot camp".
-
Tumor...basically you get a 4 yr. degree in a little under than 2 years, but you have to work your bellybutton off to achieve this. Anonymous that sounds like a good plan dude, I'm already starting to get shin splints, I will talk to my personal trainer and everything. Later all.
-
Dude
I ain't never been a JarHead but I was in the Airforce for 4 years.
My advice to you is to rent "Full Metal Jacket" and watch it about a hundred times. It is the only movie that even comes close to the reality of Boot Camp (And I was Just in the Airforce).
Just remember they say "A few good men" for a reason. They mean a few. About 30% of the guys you show up with won't finish Basic. Just make sure your not one of them. It is an initiation into a very elite club. They want to make sure you really really want in. So you better want it. But in the end it is a very well rehearsed game and you are brunt of the game. So tough it out, suck it up and walk it off. It's a game just like AH (except it really hurts if you get shot there).
Good luck/Semper Fi :aok
-
Tumor...I'm sorry dude I stand corrected, most of the Marines that only go in for 4 years only get a 2yr. whatever degreee...not bachelors lol. Than you use the $35,000 for college when you get out to get your bachelors and even if you only have a 2yr. degree you will most likely get hired at a good place because you were employed by the government and I've had 2 years of CAD experience in high school along with the 4 more I will recieve in the Marines.

Glad you checked that out man. The 2yr degree is great but don't stop there... and work hard at it early. I'm busting my bellybutton to get my degree and I'm almost at 18yrs (ya, was lazy). Got me 126 hours so far but they don't fit together for any particular major lol. CLEP as much General Education as you can, hell, start before you leave. Attending college classes is getting much easier with the online stuff, but computer space is limited when your out in the fleet... btw, I hear about all this stuff because I work in an Army dominated shop, therefore the 1 Air Force guy, me, and the 5 or 6 Marines in the shop all work together on the night shift lol. Also, I think your making a very good choice. Hey, I like the Air Force, but without at doubt.. the Marines have got it together in a few area's the Air Force can only dream about (mentoring being the biggest). I spent most of last Friday afternoon convincing my 18yr old kid to go USMC rather than USAF if that tells ya anything.
and for what it's worth... I'm amazed that the US Army can win a fight without killing each other before they even arrive. Keep that in mind if you ever end up in a Unified Command slot lol.

the call of the wild...

That's very interesting information Tumor, well if your young boy signs up and everything...let me know when he ships off. I ship off August 9, 2004. Later All!

Joining Marines...................... .....................
Good Move......................... .........................
Your life will forever be changed. You will become a part of something that you will be proud of till the day you die. When you die as a very old man a bronze plaque will be placed on your tombstone that will read "Marine", and other younger vets will place a flag on it every year as long as there is still a USA.
If I remember it correctly enough Shakespeare said it best....
The English King the night before the great battle in France.........
We few, we happy few, we band of Brothers. For any man that sheds his blood with me today will be my brother. Be he ner so vile, this day shall gentle his condition. And Englishmen now abed in England shall feel themselves acursed, and hold their manhoods cheap, while any speaks who fought with us on this Saint Crispans Day.
Close as I can remember and spell it anyway.
It was read aloud again in one of the Dday Normandy landing craft by a British Officer to his troops.
Ranger Bob
Army Ranger proud to serve with any Marine.
