Title: Skeet Shooting
Post by: Dago on October 22, 2003, 08:47:30 PM
Went skeet shooting today, first time in years.  I always get a kick out of the guys with all the cool gear,  ya know, the vest, the glasses with side shields, $2000 over/under etc.

I show up with my Winchester pump, a couple boxes of my own reloads and jump in.   They fancy gun/cool gear guys say "might be hard to hit the doubles with a pump".   hehehe

I was smoking today, hitting them better than I ever did, nailing the doubles.  Not that I am some great shooter at it, missed at least 5 targets, but I think that is pretty good for a guy who rarely shoots it.  Shot flawless in the mid stations with the wing shots (surprised myself).

Shooting skeet is a fun way to spend an afternoon, more fun than trap I think.

Skeet is way more fun than trap.  And the skeet guys aren't near as pretentious as trap guys.

I love skeet.  Even shooting wrong handed with a pump or a .410, I can hit 18/20 everytime.  Grew up with Turkey shoots.  My favorite, and last shoot, was at Fort Hood, in 1991.  I went with a friend that was fixing to go overseas, and all below the range were dozens and dozens of tanks and Bradleys, coming in from the days manuvers.  What a backdrop!

p.s. he had a Bernelli with interchangable barrels, anyone care to guess what I had?

I prefer to call that an "aiming device".

it's a lot of fun.  I tried it for the first time about 3 years ago.  I was kinda suprised how well I did.  I missed 2 the first set up and 1 on the second (I think we where going with 25 shots a set).  I guess all those years shooting at barn swallows with a .22 paid off (I could only get maybe 1 in 8 or 10 with those).

I haven't had much chance to do it since.  I had a job out of town that lasted a couple months and the only thing to do (if you wheren't into the drinking away your paycheck scene) was to shoot skeet on thursday night.

I'd done a lot of hunting and target shooting all my life but that was the first (and only) organised shooting event I've ever done and it was a blast ( a little pun intended).

btw- Dago, I got those same funny looks from the "$2,000 O/U, in a custom hard case, with 3 or 4 barrles" guys, when I pulled my 40 yr old winchester pump out of a saddle holster, and opened a lunch-box full of shells.  maybe the $125, garage sale, winchester pump should be the new skeet gun.

ahhhh

Got to love em, they last and last (and get better the more you abuse em). I have an old one for duck hunting that I would use as a paddle if need be with nary a worry.

I can't hit anything with a shotgun but my brother can do doubles all day with my ancient model '97 winchester pump.  He thinks the gun is too heavy with poor balance but he does better with it than anything.

Shooting doubles with a pump (Rem 870) was the whole reason I tried skeet.

Tough but OHH so fun when your on.

Trap was more my game though.
Best was 49 straight, choked on the last shot.

If you like skeet, try sporting clays or 5 stand if there's a course nearby, especially if you're a hunter too.  The variety of shots (particulary  in 5 stand, where each pair is different) is an incredible challenge, and because almost nobody ever "runs" a round people seem to be a little less intense.

Unfortunately, every time I shoot it confirms that my horrible gunnery in AH is not just a fluke of my computer

What's the distinction between trap and skeet?

How do you cook those skeets?

After the hogs eat the pieces, you cook the pig.

What's the distinction between trap and skeet?

Trap is shot from an arced set of shooting stations, the birds flying at one of three angles away from you thrown from one house.

Skeet has two "houses" opposite each other and throw just past the other house.  You shoot singles, one from each house, then doubles, two thrown at the same time from most of the stations.

The last two clay pigeons are thrown at an angle that is very close to you, and must be engaged very quickly before they pass you.  Skeet tends to be quicker, I enjoy it more.

This like will show you how skeet and trap work and how they differ:  Trap vs Skeet (http://gemini.tntech.edu/~cpardue/skeet-trap.html)

I shot skeet an entire day with a buddies shotgun and only missed 2 clays (most of  this was shooting singles.)  But when i grabbed my gun i couldn't hit a dang thing.  BAH!  Think i'll stick to my rifles. hehe
