Depends on the quality of the unit you want..but lets begin with the question.."Do I really *need* one?" Are you consistently traveling into territory that you need one, as an example, a regional salesperson would do?
Personally, I can't justify them, the times I *do* travel "uncharted waters" I simply pull up a map off the internet before traveling.

RIpsnort, i know printer is cheapest way, but not work if you lost direction and preety poor during night. "Uncharted water" is funn, but not when every time i drive somwhere and must turn back when saw San Francisco citty limits ;-)

I don't envy you guys who have to drive great distances to get to work...did it for about 8 years when I lived in Toronto.
These days I take a ferry to work. I have a 2 minute walk to the wharf and the ferry drops me off about 200 yards from my office.
It's a really cool way to get there...no more risking life and limb on my bike.:)
-
Far better to enjoy the morning drive in 60-70* weather with the top down at 80-90mph :aok
GPS, those are for people who get lost alot :D
-
Curval, I'm with you on that one.
My commute, if you can call it that, is about 1/2 mile.
lol.. and I used to commute for 1 hour when I lived in Denver!
-
I drive 5 miles in 20 minutes to get to work, top speed 40mph, traffic lights every 300 yards or so. Sometimes I long for the open road and a sports car.
-
45 miles to work one way all of it on the freeway. Unfortunately I have to drive through downtown Austin to get there. So the first 30 min (10 miles) I get to go about 30 to 40mph. But once I past downtown I'm at work in a bout 15 min ;) 80-90mph cept where the DPS has their daily speed trap.

Be careful of the sudden 30-40 mph zones....they pop up quick :o
If you have a laptop, you can get a real nice GPS for about $200.00. I use a GPS with my laptop all the time when I travel.

Early morning in October, when the temperature is about 67 degrees or so, nothing beats rocketing up I-35 in an S2000 with the top down. Everyone's going at least 80...sometimes even the cops are passing me in the left lane. :D
-
Ah, one of the few pleasures in life. :D
There I was this morning, put-putting along to work and anxiously awaiting the arrival of my 'backroad turnoff' which would allow me to enjoy the feeling of lateral G forces when I see it...
no...
it cant be...
SNOW!
whoopee its October and Ive seen the first flurries of the year... cant believe it. Spoiled my whole morning. I hate winter here... its depressing. We have the 'eternal grey sky' that shows up about late October and doesnt leave until April. During these months the cloud layer is solid, casting a dreary shadow upon everything. The Sun become an old friend that youll see again come springtime.
F this... Im moving south.

j/k! You're more than welcome in Texas!

Yes.. I now have to warm up my tires to have the normal lateral grip. I relized it when I jumped on to I-4 it's a nice sharp right hand on ramp. I had the drift'n going on.. tho I rather stick to get though the turn faster! :D

That speed is about par in many places. Speed limits are artificially low. Cops can write as many tickets as they want. It's rediculous.
-
I jump on my bicycle and it get no speed tickets, but it take me 20 min at a speed of 5 to 10km upphill, to campus 10 to15 min back home downhill.( and possible a broken arm soon since the snow came monday lol)

HAH! I was in Dallas once and hated it, although buddies of mine from the United Counties of Texas have informed me that the Houstan area is much nicer (and smells better).
Guns, check.
Sunshine, check.
AH HQ, check.
REAL BBQ, check.
I just might like it down there. :D

About the only city in Texas worse than Dallas is Houston; come to God's Country!
-
I have to disagree with you there Liz. While I agree houston suckors bigtime, Dallas is worse in my opinion. Central Texas is the best place on the planet though.
-
Houston is ok, if you like continous suana like weather. Humid, hot,..then cold and humid.
Austin is a nice area, but during some parts of the summer it can get pretty miserable due to the lack of wind in a lot of areas (hills and valleys abound). Cannot beat the lakes around Austin. They are absolutely the best.
DF/W (Dallas/Ft.Worth) is a bit unique. Two cities which have very different cultures and lifestyles. Dallas wants to be a New York type of city. The hustle and bustle and fast pace (well,..fast for us Texans) directly contrast with Ft. Worths mild mannered slow Southern style and pace.
Between all of the them, I think it is easier to find diversity in the DF/W area. And the world-class airport makes it easy to plan trips to just about anywhere on the planet.
One constant; Texas (not transplants so much, nor Bubba when he is on a beer binge,..or worse,..when Bubba is outta beer) folks are about as friendly as it gets. :D
-
I like Austin.
-
I don't know if that is a plus or minus for Austin Funk. :D
