As everyone has seen these people with no names other then some set of numbers that may or may not relate to anything other then to the person who came up with them.
It just occurs to me that some people may not have much of an imagination, perhaps I, in my own humble way may help to inspire them to find a name more suitable to the game and the gamers at large so they may fit in a bit better and increase their game playing enjoyment.
I will relay my own struggle to find the perfect ah call sign for my self. Now you may jump to the conclusion that "Yanksfan" was an easy chioce for me.Ahhhh no!
After d/loading the game it was time to play. but no, whats this, you must pick a name, So I tryed my name, but this didn't sound like a wise idea, who knows the freaks and nair do wells that may wish to know my name for some evil purpose. So what to call myself, looking down pondering the question I noticed my socks, i often wear them, hmmmm "socks", hmm no, maybe "SOX", yeah ,cool, No!SOX sounds to much like SUC"S and even thou it may be a true statement that i do suck at this game, no, people will asume i'm some kinda chicago or worse yet boston fan, hmmmm! Fan, hmmmm fan is good, but some how incomplete, i like to wear socks but can't use that, hmmm, i like pants too, and often wear them, "Pantsfan", hmmm No!
Well to make a long story short after several months of brain storming and marketing research I came up with "Yanksfan", Still take alot of crap about the Yankees but hey, what are ya gonna do! much better then 3455646 which was actually my first choice but was already in use.
So take heart zip code guys there is a name out there for you, just try to use a little thought alittle imagination, maybe ask friends or coworkers, but please, please, try not to pick something stupid.

There has to be a thousand words, or variants you could have come up with over a month of thought. Don't you have access to a dictionary or a thesarus? Heck, any book for that matter could produce plenty of ideas for variants.

There, I took an X theme, and a dictionary and some imagination, and came up with plenty of decent ideas. Maybe some are already used, but I imagine that a unique and personal name is not that hard to come up with. Yanksfan is fine, but like you said, it seems to come with plenty of stigma, and not a whole lot of individuality.
Open your mind to more than what you see around you. It can be an adventure.
Edit: BTW, I don't have a fettish for the letter X, I ended up with the X in my handle since Tracer was already taken, so the next coolest thing I could think of was to add an X instead of a number. About a minute and a half of thought there. I just chose an X theme for this example because it seemed like a difficult letter to come up with ideas for. Thought I would answer this question before it was asked.

RedTop was easy to come up with....I was really suprised it wasn't taken at the time.

I liked that guy that had the name "Himself". Back in the early days of AHI (with the old kill messages) you would see "Beefcake shot down himself in a B17G". That was always good for a laugh.

I had a couple of close friends start flying before I did back in the WBs 1.10 days I believe. I started out flying a little at their house and gott hooked....went out and bought my 1st pute, downloaded the game and set up a time we would all meet up for my first sortie.
Figurin I might not get my 1st choice of a handle I had about a half a dozen things in mind.
First try...Handle in use, all the way thru my list! By this time I'm gettin a little frustrated and late for my coming out party soooo bein a handsomehunk I typed in dldo figurin who cares surely it's in use too. Wrong, that's what stuck.:huh
Now flying under the handle of dldo certainly got me a lot of, ahem..recognition as you can Imagine.
However it all worked out well, HT decided to give everyone a oneshot chance to change their handle, on to aztec I went.
My fondest memory of flying as dldo was when I managed to kill a very good stick who went by the handle girl.

When I signed up to go online, I had no idea that my "name" would need to be something that would be spoken, I thought it was something like an alias in a web forum.
Almost right away I realized that I made a mistake. I hear people all the time saying "Hey uh S C... SC whatever CHECK SIX" Very quickly I was asked to join a squad so they know me as Scaaa so now I don't want to change...

I alwas get carried away when I see a numbers dood with someone on their six. Ill send em a check six, and if cant I just start throwing out numbers. HEy 82409858732098245958209 check your six.
They never have a mic either so you dont have to hear em whine when they got shotdown though, thats nice.

One time, at band camp.....
But seriously, one time I was texting a numbers guy the same message, and to prove how easy it was, I rattled off about 5 good names off the top of my head. One of them was KillinU. Now, the guy I was talkin too didnt take any of my suggested names, but someone else did :D.

My name is actually a total chance. I got the internet when I was about 5 and started playing Runescape as "travola" (being named Travis). On other sites, I started calling myself travolaonrunescape. Typing that every time I logged in somewhere was a real pain.
I decided to branch out into the world of AIM (AOL Instant Messaging). Piss people off without the need of a character, you see. Being tired of travolaonrunescape giving me carpal tunnel, I went for something even longer. Hey, I'm 6. ...... Shut up. Anyway, I typed in something like
Oo oO Oo oO ZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZ OOOOOOOOOOOOO
Now, that probably looks like just a bunch of Os and Zs. I based it off the "internet smilie face" thingies O.o o.O and O.O with ZzZzZzZzZ as snoring. Was supposed to be some guy like, "Hmmm. Hmm. Nope, nothing. *sleep* *REALLY AWAKE!*"
Being somewhere around a googleplex characters long, AIM rejected it and gave the old list of "Hey retard, pick one of these." Right in the middle was OOZ662. And hence OOZ (known as Ozz to the AHers that can't read) was born.
Ahhh, the mind of a kindergartener.
